Harry Maguire involved in incident with police in Greece - conviction nullified by appeal, full retrial pending

The greek judicial system is, to put it very bluntly: Flawed.

I understand from your point of view that you don't give two shits about that but I'll reply anyway.

Greece has a lot of problems domestically especially after the last finance crisis. The justice is slow moving and has a tremendous backlog. This has resulted in poorly educated judges, corruption and cases where lower courts simply make up rules.

Accoring to the WJP Rule of Law index which ranks nations based on a large variety of social, economic and judicial factors, Greece is ranked as the most corrupt legal system in Europe.

https://worldjusticeproject.org/rule-of-law-index/country/2020/Greece/Criminal Justice/

Case in point: Prosecution presenting evidence without giving defense counsel time to review evidence, and a summarily ruling by the court at haste. No wonder the verdict got overturned on appeal. It was a sham.

In Congo many years ago there was a now infamous trial where two Norwegians were on trial for murdering their driver. They proclaimed their innocence but were convicted anyway. The point was not the conviction, but the stories the congolese prosecution made up as they went along: They demanded Norway pay more money than actually exists in the world for espionage because they had binoculars, so of course they were spies, and a host of other things.

The point about mentioning this outlier is that hearsay and "I believe the police side of the story move on with your life" is very much a part of the juducial system in Greece. You're offering no belief to the point of view of Maguire and only believe the Greek Police's side of events, when its the greek police who have the burden of evidence.

So out of curiosity: Why don't you believe Maguires version of events?

Because it doesnt make sense. The maguire version is filled with plotholes. The greek didn't even says a word.

I'm not playing favorites. If the greek cops comes out with this sort of bullshit i too will laugh at it.

I never blamed maguire, nor i think he should be stripped of captaincy. By all means doubt him or them. Innocent until proven etc. But for the love of god i cant take the greek cops being lambasted because i really see them doing nothing wrong.

Maguire isnt jailed.
Maguire isnt extorted.
Maguire isnt beaten up.
He's free to leave the country.

And it could all go away with an apology. Do you not see that as being a bit fecked up? A lot of Greek cops in these resort areas are total cnuts, I can personally attest to that and the fact that you don't believe a word from Maguire or the people with them but believe everything the (I'm laughing typing this) Greek police say is astounding. Greek cops are cnuts.

Maguire hasn't claimed all this though. It was local witnesses the journos talked to that mentioned munich songs and so on.

Maguire's have said that their sister started rolling her eyes and they believed she was drugged. I believe they said she had a mark on her arm so it was assumed she was injected with something. It was stated that Maguire had physical damages from before they met the police (which his lawyer tried to ask about in court and the police had no response), so he must have gotten them from brawling with someone?

I don't think the metal straw or Albanian was mentioned by them, but someone did something to them, they argued/fought with someone.
If they did say it was Albanian maybe locals had said something about Albanian mafia being in the area doing shady stuff so it was jumped to conclusions.

Nobody said there were secret police, but plain clothed. Van wasn't kidnapped but drived was redirected without their knowledge.

The 50 pages 2 hours before is confirmed by their lawyer, nothing to refute here. Not sure where 400 is coming from even though I saw someone on here mention it earlier.

The extortion theory has never been mentioned by them. Most of what you have an issue with are just theories from people in this thread, on twitter and some sensationalist journos.
It's not Maguire that has claimed all this. So let's just wait for a full statement either in court or to the media before we hang him over hearsay.

Yes. And that's exactly what i have issue with. I have no issue with maguire getting drunk and doing stulid things. We all been there. So what if it happened. I understand their position i do. He doesnt murder anyone nor was he being charged with anything. 21 month suspended sentences is basically a slap in the wrist.

It’s not just a bar fight though is it?

it extended into resisting arrest, violent aggression on a police man and trying to bribe him. Those are three very serious offences. Especially bribery, which will cause Maguire the most issues as a captain and marketing asset.
Alledged and denied.

How do you know his story has changed? You’ve been posting on speculation all the way through this thread, believing it and then acting like Maguire has changed his story.
For some strange reason, there are a lot of so-called United fans on here who appear desperate to find Maguire guilty, nearly as fast as the Greeks themselves.

Makes you wonder what their motives are.

Just putting this out there (not wumming or anything). Maguire is being accused of, and handed a suspended guilty verdict for things a normal African American gets bullets pumped into him/her for attempting.
Its for those who still needs convincing that Black Lives Matter.
What?

Talk about stretching things to their limit. BLM has nothing to do with this, at all.

Some of you in here are so silly. How can you go on holiday to a foreign country, fail to hold your liquor and then blame it on the residents. Granted it does happen a player like Maguire with all to lose should be much smarter and mature with his decision making. He also tried to pay officials??? Maguire is an idiot!
Proof?

Not just "because the Greek police said so". Video? Any other proof? How do you explain Maguire's legal team not being allowed to use video or forensic proof? Does that not appear 'dodgy' to you?

I think Maguire could well be a victim of the reputation of the British tourists with the local coppers. As for the rushed trial, I suspect they do that to ease the burden on their juridical system.
What about the refusal to allow the defence to use video evidence? Is that normal in your opinion?

What do your think the motives are? Is it a conspiracy?

I would have thought it would have been better to avoid doing interviews until the trial is over.

Just watched the interview. Presented himself well. He was in tears talking about his sister - convinced that something dodgy was happening to her and I don’t blame him for acting out.

Good, feck em up Harry. If someone had done something to someone close to me in a situation like that, I don't give a feck if they're police or the president or whatever else, I'd do the same thing and push through. Seems corrupt as feck anyway. Glad he's sticking up for himself.

Absolutely pathetic isn’t it.

The prosecutor claimed that Maguire viciously beat one of the cops senseless, but from the hospital all the cop wanted was an apology .

If Maguire had beaten a cop then he’d be spending the next 15-20 years inside, not walking away with a slapped wrist.

For those who want the quotes:

Quotes:
Speaking to BBC News at 10, an emotional Maguire said hearing the guilty verdict was “horrible” and that he “couldn’t quite believe it”.

“I don’t feel I owe an apology to anybody,” he said. “An apology is something when you have done something wrong.”

Maguire added: “Obviously the situation has made it difficult for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I regret putting the fans and the club through this, but I did nothing wrong. I found myself in a situation where it could have happened to anybody and anywhere.”

Asked how badly he was hurt, Maguire said: “They hit me a lot on the legs. It wasn’t on my mind. I was in that much of a panic. Fear. Scared for my life.”

I hope the club are on this, properly supporting him behind the scenes.

Can this blow over already, it’s not like anyone holds anything against Harry.

Criminal justice system is complex and is different per country. The point is that the judge (and jury where relevant) is completely independent from the police.

Legislation, law enforcement, courts (including lawyers and judges) and corrections are typically the main components of any criminal justice system. They are all independent of one and other but the criminal justice system could not function without all of the parts working together.

I'm sure the club lawyers are there to let him know what he can or cannot say. No apology, got it. We're behind you arry.

They aren't united fans, just sad trolls, that's their motive. The undisguised animosity towards cpt Harry on this thread is pathetic.

So reading online there’s forensic evidence showing Maguire’s injuries and that his sister was drugged and there’s video of them being mistreated. All of which wasn’t allowed to be presented at the trial. Sounds like justice has been done.

Poor guy. He's obviously distraught about what his family have and are going through and letting the club down at the same time when he's been completely fecked just for earning a bit of dosh.

Because obviously, this post didn't deserve to be backed with sources.

Came across well , he’s right to do an interview also. Feck the police.

some of the msgs on this thread are embarrassing

Maguire only did what anyone of us would do which is protect his sister, the police apparently told him his career was over and kicked him in the legs. Maguire is innocent in my eyes and all’s he wanted to do it was enjoy his holiday with his family.

I have no idea who to believe and the truth most likely lies some where in the middle but if they were beating his legs I’d like to see the bruises.

Supporting a football club now includes slandering an entire nation, its police and its justice system in blind support of a man convicted of assault and bribery.

You've got me intrigued now. What happened to the 2 Norwegians? Did they get done for espionage in the end?
