Hate to say it, but other than the penalty he didn't put a foot wrong, was in the right place more often than not, and really was pretty solid on the ball.
I was there at the game tonight and it's noticeable that he does actually read the game pretty well, but he needs to be quicker on the ball.

He was dispossessed for the second goal as well wasn’t he?

And got sat down by Musiala only for Werner to drag wide

Don't think he was at fault for the second goal, that was class from Havertz, he wasn't closed down quick enough on the edge of the box.

Tbf he lost it about 70 yards away from his goal. I mean if there's a place on the pitch you wouldn't mind giving away the ball if you had to, about there isn't a bad location. England were just poor getting back, and Havertz banged a stunner on his weak foot.

When it's your CB losing the ball in that place, then it is a bad because it leads to that exact situation, a dangerous counter-attack. The way he lost also comes down to the same flaws first thinking he is some kind of genius with the ball at his feet and second just knowing what he was going to do with the ball because he is so slow of thought, it was a needless give away that lead to the goal. Also as he recovered, he just ran straight up the middle, he literally went and covered no one, not Havertz or whoever the other German player that had gone in the middle in the box, just didn't seem to know where the danger was.

Don't really want to shit on him, from a United supporter perspective hate to see it because I expect at some point he is going to have a run of games for us because Varane will be out - he just seems to getting worse and worse at this point and would not have said the same maybe year ago but, thought terrifies me of him starting any meaningful games for United.

Maguire with confidence is still a average / poor player , Maguire without confidence is just a walking calamity. I think the biggest problem is him being made captain, it put such unnecessary pressure to him. if he was just 30m , not a captain, he would probably perform better.

The first was a big issue. Giving the ball away was bad, but the way he squared up is really school boy defending. It's how you're taught not to defend even in PE lessons

I did find the third one funny if anybody has a video. He was basically holding Werner(?) And didn't even turn around when the ball went past him. Pretty sure he was still facing the other way when the goal was scored

Agreed, and defender giving the ball away so far up causes issues at the back as they should be the ones recovering it.

Great goal from Havertz of course and yes Maguire got back but he still lost the ball high up the pitch.

When he lost the ball there were still 3 players behind him to cover, and Rice was also there next to him. The thing is, you either want your CB occupying a position that high up the pitch in possession or you don't. But if he's there, there is a chance he might lose the ball (as do attacking players) because it's usually the most competitive area of the pitch.

You've got to take the risk with the reward.

Yeah that was terrible.

he was at fault for the second goal, if he doesn’t try and dribble back towards his own goal. Also, if you watch him running back, he ball watches the entire time, not once looking over his shoulder. A more intelligent player would have cut out the ball to Havertz long before it got to him.

you can actually see Shaw doing Maguire job for him like he has had to try and do at united several times;

shaws position here is fine.

But Maguire just hasn’t done anything at all to stop the shot, so Shaw has to leave his man completely free to try and block the shot.

Maguire makes big mistakes more often than any other defender I’ve ever seen. That’s not hyperbole either, it’s costly mistake game after game. He’s rubbish.

Exactly this.

There wasn't a single person berating Maguire for that goal in the , it was far from his fault.

Disagree with you on the second goal.

The biggest thing wrong with the screen shot you've put? It's 5v5 in and around England's box. That's not Maguire's issue, that's the midfield not tracking back quickly enough.

I get the impression that journalists and fans alike are now picking up on the smallest of details with Maguire in order to prove that Southgate shouldn't be starting him.

As I say, I was in the ground tonight and no one blamed that second goal on Maguire,

I think he was pretty poor tonight but it’s a bit harsh blaming him for their second goal. When he lost the ball he was deep in their half with adequate cover around him. Stupid to lose the ball there of course.

The way this guy is getting berated on social media is disgusting.

Sure he's making mistakes and maybe not good enough for club or country but there's no need for the constant crap being flung his way. You just had to look at his wedding album that he posted on social media platforms. There were people even trolling that. It's just a never-ending flood of horse manure from people who are supposed to be United fans. Disgusting.

At the end of the day he's a human being just like the rest of us. The constant negativity can affect anyone in a big way. Mentally I hope he's able to cope because feck me, I'd have imploded by now. Also people can be horrible.

I'm sure he's left footed no?

No reason to be mean or abuse him and do shitty comments on his pages but I guess you will always have that on social media. That said he is not good enough for Man Utd and should be sold, criticizing him over his game and play is ok and justified. In my opinion the worst captain I've seen at Utd, no natural leadership visible, no self reflection or responsibility taken. For his own sake in terms of footie and playing time he should be looking to leave. Wether he was good enough to earn the move to Utd is questionable but he has clearly not been able to deal with the pressure of being a red devil, as have many other players, no shame in it, also no need to sugar coat it or keep on trying this as it's just not gonna work especially with ETH system.

Also don't like Brandon Williams comments calling people idiots for questioning selection if a player has been good in training, Harry may be great in training but it's useless if he's can't deliver it when it matters. I also know there are trolls, bullies and idiots on Twitter but Brandon should have been a pro and not used that word, you have to better than that, better than them.

Well said. A lot of social media is muck.

Its crazy man.

I've never seen a United player so constantly derided like this guy. Maybe Beckham for England's World Cup exit but even then people got over it. With Harry he can post a 'Well done team' message if we won a PL match (not having featured) and even then pitchforks will be out for him.

Apologies my post comes off as a rant. Just sick and tired of seeing this guy get mauled every waking minute. Its unnecessary.

im not sure how else to put this, but I believe that everyone in the ground is wrong. The quick counter creating the 5 on 4 comes directly from Maguire Giving the ball away. He’s the last England player to touch the ball, and it would statistically count as an error leading to a goal

Yeah, well, like SAF would say, the guy's made a rod for his own back.

You don't come out bigging yourself up like that ( 'Managers keep picking me, so I must be doing something right'; 'I was in the team of the tournament despite missing x amount of games'; 'They must be after clicks because I'm the United captain ...' etc.) and not expect trolls to be all over you when you don't perform. That's the life of a modern athlete.

Talk shite if you can back it up. Otherwise, there'll be folks at your throat.

He's getting bashed left, right and centre on social media. But when a player isn't fit to start for any Premier League team, but gets chosen regularly for Manchester United and for the England national side, the trolling is rather obvious.

How many more of these dire performances does Maguire need to put up before he's rightfully relegated to some Championship side like Millwall or Luton Town ?

He’s good enough to play for at least half of the premier league teams to be fair, obviously not the way he’s been performing for over a year, but his mind is absolutely gone.

If he gets a move to a smaller team, gets his head right, away from Man United and England, he can probably do alright and finish his career in a good light.
He has to get back to do the basics of defending well, forget about trying to pass out of the back, that will only sink him further down the hole, and at some point it will be too deep.

He's pretty much equal in level to the likes of Tarkowski and Mings. Trouble is there's no path for him to get away from the spotlight at United to a bottom/mid table club where he can get back to being a low-block low-possession semi-decent plodder.

Usual story, transfer fee and wages and homegrown status means he's trapped here for at least another 2 years unless Chelsea or Newcastle do something really stupid.

Surely nobody can say he’s a good defender now? The bolded bit is basic defending we are taught in PE here and I’m not even from England!

Maybe it's time for him to handle a transfer request then. He can return to his level and we can move forward

Is giving a penalty away not bad enough? Should we just accept a one huge feck up a game as the 'Maguire's' tax?

I'm sure the muppets are really happy today seeing as they can actually blame Harry for at least one goal in an England shirt and not be scapegoating him. I wonder if they have figured out a way to blame him for the last goal too?

My tiktok will be filled with "Harry Maguire!" later today.

Yes, although I’m not a great fan of Maguire, the baying for blood that goes on is really distasteful. I get tired of the myopic comments about Fred, who I personally rate.
Unfortunately some people just get off on insulting and humiliating others. It’s a sickness. I’m glad I’m not enough of a celeb to have to deal with it, it must be a fecking nightmare.

Everything is going to be OK, Harry.

Just get him out of the team, it would be a miracle if he recovered from all the bad press and memes. You stop kicking when a man is down and that man is down

Its evident that he's not good enough at this level. He should handle his transfer request and we should do our best to find him a buyer
