How did he play well?
Serious questions.

A game like this you need your defenders to squeeze up and take risks. Just sitting back and heading the ball is standard.

The rest of the team were shite against the USA and Harry was really good..credit where credit is due.

Games like this suit him. He isn't going to come back and be a better player for us. Hopefully these performances deceive someone to take him off our hands

Exactly.

Harry does well in a low block. Nothing revealing about tonight's performance. He did the things he does when he's in a scenario that suits him. Played well, in the circumstances, but he'll never be what you want in a high pressing, dominant side.

Did alright defensively but I thought England was crying out for a Martinez to drill balls out from the back quicker and more incisively. Stones and Maguire were dawdling too much.

It's never a good sign when a defender is your best player (either him or Shaw) but when it's Maguire then it's particularly telling given he only really excels at defending his penalty area. It doesn't change the fact that he's not going to be good for us if we become a more dominant team but it's good that he reminded himself and others that he does have qualities.

I gave him a lot of stick for his performance against Iran, but he was outstanding today. Arguably England's best player. Read everything, headed away everything, was ok in possession, looked confident. Well done.

I dont like him playing simply because it stops you doing that; but he did what was asked of him and the game did suit him. He had to do his job though, and he did it better than anyone tonight.

By far the best england player tonight. Had a dominant performance at the back especially clearing corners. Was composed and commanding in the area.

It is not really deceiving someone though. Harry is a very good defender in the right system as this game showed, he just lacks the ability to play in a progressive team such as the one ETH is building. Managers like Conte or Mourinho would use him exactly as Southgate does in their conservative slow paced style and he would be a rock, he was excellent for us when we were basically just a counter attacking team under Ole.

Good performance tonight. Was progressive on the ball and was dominant aerially (vital because Pulisic's deliveries were excellent all night).

He’s always going to look better playing for England it’s a slower pace, a lower standard and he gets to play a lot deeper. He was arguably England’s best player tonight, and showed why he would be a good signing for someone who will play to his strengths.

I think ETH will be happy that Harry is performing well as he knows his ceiling is high.

I enjoy it when he does well tbh, the scale of the abuse/ridicule towards him is unprecedented for such a relatively low key player

His performances for England are irrelevant. I miss the days where United fans judged United players on United performances & didn’t give a damn what they did nationally.

In the grand scheme I’m happy he’s playing well but we’ve seen for what? 4 years that his international form doesn’t translate to his club form.

What kinda asinine argument is this? No one is saying he was great for United this season because he played well today for England. Everyone is just judging this particular performance, the whole point of this thread.

He was absolutely fantastic. Pretty much perfect. The only thing he could’ve done to enhance his performance further was score a winner. Well done Harry. This is the way to build on a good performance against West Ham in the last Premier League game he played at club level.

Asinine would be getting upset over an accusation you’ve concocted in your head. Who said people were saying that?

Him playing well today for England, as he often does, is irrelevant to how he has performed at club level really shouldn’t make you so upset.

Think it shows that Maguire can actually be good for a defensive team (Leicester and England tonight). He's not the trash defender people think, he just has limitations playing for us has exposed which is our fault for signing him.

I can see why they thought that given your immediate response to him playing well for England was to dismiss it and say United fans shouldn't care. Someone pointing out that a United player did well for England isn't some sort of a flaw.

He’s a decent player that had a bad season and wasn’t worth what we paid for him. If we really did want rid of him and didn’t mind taking what would obviously be a loss we would move him on without much trouble.

I’d listen to this argument had this forum not been littered with many a Rashford thread where far worse is said the second he misses a shot. It’s always illuminating the hills posters chose to die on & who for.

I called his performances for England irrelevant in relation to United. I follow it up with a post saying he plays well for England often yet somehow you’ve read that as me saying dismissing something I acknowledged?

Him playing well for England hasn’t correlated with his United performances. If you’d like to argue that point, fine but don’t fill gaps that aren’t there. I never used to give a damn how United players performed for England when their United performances spoke for themselves so why would I start now? That’s not me saying he hasn’t played well.

He's always good for England. They don't try to play higher than he's capable of, and he's a far more dominant presence in the box than Stones so he takes responsibility. It shows he's a decent fit somewhere at a high level, he is just not cut out for Ten Hag football.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got moved on and did well at another club (e.g. Leicester, Southampton, wherever Dyche goes to) and people say we just misused him.

80mil and united captaincy to thank for that. If we’d of paid 40mil and used him as rotation, he would be a great additional to the team. Too much pressure on him unfortunately hence why he crumbles in a United shirt.
