Was Ings even on Maguire's mind when he dropped off Watkins? Seems to me like he was anticipating the pass to be ahead of him rather than behind him. Maybe he realised that he wasn't going to win in a race between himself and Watkins and decided to try and cut out the imminent through pass. In any case, it wasn't great defending, that's for sure.

Pure speculation

A big problem with the goal was our players switching off and asking for handball. The ref didn't give it and that allowed a pass to be played through the midfield. Martial, VDB, Fred, and McT all stop playing to protest. Dalot anticipates a pass to McGinn (his man) and attempts to begin a press. ETH is asking our players to do this. Kamara ends up playing the ball through to Ramsey and that allows him to run at our defence.

Based on how the camera is positioned, we don't know if Maguire is aware of Watkins or not. When Maguire appears, he doesn't appear to scan behind to check the threat. Based on what Maguire does, it looks like he's trying to anticipate a pass on the inside. He takes a step inside as soon as the ball is played on the outside to Watkins. Watkins is making a dangerous run in behind that'll put him in a 1v1 with Dubravka. Watkins is also on Maguire's side. He has to be the priority. If he knows he's there, I don't understand how he can ignore the run he's making. If he's not aware of him, that is an awareness issue.

Maguire isn't the only problem. The midfield has been played through in one 5 yard pass. The Sky Sports highlights don't show what happened before Villa won the ball back. I'm sure it was Fred that gave it away in the first place.

Terrible again last night, just don't know what's happened to him. God help England with him starting games. If he makes a mistake and we go out because of it Southgate's got nobody to blame other than himself because it's the most obvious thing ever.

I like the guy but hes simply nowhere near the player we need to play the sort of football we want to play. His pace is shockingly bad and his speed of turn and agility is dire. He would be fine for a counter attacking side that doesn't invite teams to break on them.

The difference in every way between Maguire and Martinez is stark. Martinez is quick, aggressive, light on his feet, doesn't dive in and positionally good. Maguire is none of these things and I would be stunned if hes not gone in the summer.

Yep and this is why I believe EtH is on the right track, even though our football is still far from being great. He identified players who will not be able to play the way he (and most of us fans) want United to play and he is pretty clear about that.
Maguire, McTominay, Ronaldo, AWB, Fred, Lindelöf will play a certain role, but it is obvious that the goal is to replace them by new players better fitting into our system.

He just shouldn’t be anywhere near a team that looks to dominate high up the pitch in a back 4.. way too fragile at the back when countered. He’d be great in a Jose/Conte team but just doesn’t work for us.

He looks terrible in that picture. Newspapers just have to wave money at these football players to rope them in.

Great stuff from Harry. Hope he has a great WC and comes back full of confidence.

Games against this quality of opposition aren't going to change anyone's now well-informed opinion on Maguire as a defender.

But, they may justify Southgate's decision to include him in the team. So far so good.

Also, on a more human level, prefer not to see anyone go through the amount of abuse Maguire would definitely get if one of his feck ups knocks England out of the World Cup.

Not surprised this hasn’t been bumped.

I praised him in the World Cup thread. It’s really not a shock when he plays well for England any more than it is than when he looks like a clown for us, though.

Definitely more surprised than me after seeing him make a routine mistake that leads to a goal. Good thing Iran are so shit it doesn't matter. Later on in the World Cup though...

poor defending on his part losing the runner and then goes down wiht a head injury? how does a head that big get concussed?

Any news on his injury? Looked quite shaken and dizzy
Haven't seen or heard anything. Hard to know when he got injured given no replays. He tweeted this though so perhaps no news is good news:

I thought he played well and involved in two goals. Defence in general were a bit sloppy and tougher tests to come.

I hope he is okay.
Yeah given how little he has featured for us this season I thought he did really well.

Maguire was awful and made the England team's defence worse with them covering for him. Hopefully it's enough for Southgate to see what everyone else sees but I doubt it. How did he get in this squad (and starting line up) ahead of Tomori??

Personally I thought he played well, though admittedly I didn’t see the second half.

Nothing to do with him being concussed I'm sure.
Is he concussed every time he plays? he makes that mistake for United every game he plays.

He always tries to over react when defending instead of just holding his position.

Probably faked feeling dizzy knowing he'd fecked up yet again, hopefully people will feel sorry for him.

Look at Alex Jones over here...

He was absolutely fine, then suddenly got dizzy out of nowhere straight after the goal? a bit weird

Probably an anxiety attack or something knowing he was at fault for letting in a soft goal.

This is an absolute nonsense.

He had a good game and had quite clearly been asked to play more proactively than those times he’s part of a back 3.

People are too keen to carry existing bias along, and reticent to be objective.

Do you believe the drivel you spout or just want attention?
