True he does lack pace but so do plenty of other CB's.

His issues tonight (I didn't think he was that bad or at fault for the goals) were purely confidence. Rash moments that didn't exist in his game two years ago.
Mate, he was awful. And he was absolutely a big reason for their first goal. Out of position and then hopeless trying to get back.

Who is gonna buy him? He has a 190K salary with contract running till 2025
Shows everything wrong with this club and contract offers. Was he anywhere near 190k when he was at Leicester? Probably not, but we'll still treble wages for mediocre players.

Thought he was awful. Even his long diagonals were shite.

The fact that ETH had to bring Licha for the final minutes says it all. This is applicable to Lindelof aa well.

Everything Harry does he does in first or second gear. So slow. Lindelof was just as bad. He's got a good switch in him, when there's no pressure being applied. However, his use of the ball when he has to make quick decisions is terrible. Its actually silly to compare him to Varane.

Maybe. I thought the first goal came from problems further up the pitch.

I think hell leave in the summer and it'll be a straightforward move. He won't hang around to be a sub and its clear he won't be first choice under ETH.

I still think its a bit of a shame how its gone.

He doesn't and won't work with Ten Hag's style. He is just too slow and can't compensate that with reading the game and positioning accordingly, like Varane does. I wouldn't even put him ahead of Lindelof in the pecking order. Don't we have someone from the U21s who can come in?

Maguire honestly plays like a defender that if you were controlling him on FIFA and you had a 2 second delay on every button you pressed.

Varane is miles better at reading and positioning yet he doesn't even half to be, he's the quickest CB we have. Says it all really

Glad that Big Pete called out him (and Lindelof) for Villa's second goal. The media seem to think we're doing him (and England) dirty but depriving him of minutes.

Comical for the first goal. He has one player to watch, gets his body shape all wrong, opens up a massive passing lane for Ramsey to play in Watkins, and then even Dalot runs ahead of him to close him down quicker from right back. Absolutely atrocious.

Conte, Simeone or Mou needs to sign him. The only teams he can play for is counter attacking teams where they defend in their own box for 95 minutes every game. He could revamp his career if he could find a team where all his horrendus attributes would be disguised by staying in his own box.

The first goal today showed why we have lost so many games. Every counter creates chaos and he has no way of stopping attackers once they start running. The only thing he can do is foul them, and today he was lucky not to get a red card at the end.

I think he knows that he has no chance to makes it here now with the high line ETH demands, and his confidence will only get worse and worse for every goal conceded that he is a part of.

So he should call Mike and ask if he can talk to Mou to come save him from his nightmare.

There is being slow and there is being Harry Maguire slow.... a lack of pace or a total lack of any pace.

Hilarious that he is going to the World Cup though. I expect him to be a starter for England too. Hopefully he does well and fools an English team into buying him.

Needs to be no where near the first team or the U-21s. Terrible defender. Below is an example of his headless chicken defending. Runs to cover an attacker who is in an offside position & has his back to the goal. Ignores the run next to him and drifts in the other direction where there is no threat in the first place. This has nothing to do with pace, it's just brainless decision making.

Yeah he's not only slow in thought and action but his defensive iq is terrible as well. The first goal as you highlight shows all his weaknesses.

And on PES it feels like you set defending type to All Out Defend but the way you defend is by pressing Square+Cross all the time.

I don't like calling players names, but he is really a clown on the pitch at this point. How on earth is he this bad?

Maguire’s believes he’s better than the bench in his head. He thinks he’s the best defender at the club. He will go himself.
Yes, I also believe he will come to that conclusion in the end. Even if Varane continue his injury struggle, Maguire will forever be a backup under ETH. He has a 3-5 years left at PL level, so why waste it on the bench when he would play every game in another team. The risk is that he thinks he’s too good for the teams where he will fit.

Maguire needs to go back to a club that are at his level where he is part of a defence that has their backs to the walls where he doesn't need to worry about playing football so much more putting his body on the line. Sadly any club that plays that way cannot afford his wages or pay any significant transfer fee. Lindelof is also nowhere near good enough and needs shifting.

Spurs would be a great shout. 40m would be a good price for both parties.

Multiple incompetencies can exist at once. Even without mistakes this is just the cost of doing business when pushing up. You can't have your CB be hopeless in the couple moments every game they are bound to happen. In fact this was the same story in preseason when the same goal saw him dropped from the first team soon after.

It doesn't look like Ten Hag is as sympathetic towards Maguire's limitations defending space.

edit and for the removal of doubt his problem goes beyond pace, he can't read these situations to save his life.

For a defender his reading of the game is downright disastrous.

Wonder will he be a starter for England?

I can't comment on his wider performance having only watched the highlights but I feel that people are definitely over-exaggerating his role in the goals Villa scored, as is often the case with Maguire.

With the first goal I would criticize him for being slow on the turn. There's no guarantee another would've got back and made the tackle on Watkins but I'd say there are some defenders who could've done it, fair enough. However, the screenshots showing that Maguire "moved over to cover an offside player with his back to goal" fail to account for the fact that in what must have been the next frame along, this same player (I think I must be Ings) had moved onside. Once Ramsey has bypassed the midfield it's an extremely difficult scenario for the centre backs to handle. I think the bigger problem on this goal is that, once again, neither McTominay not Fred are properly protecting their backline with the rest of the team pushed so high up.

As for the second goal, well quite frankly I have absolutely no idea how people could blame Maguire for that one. Maybe he gave the ball away initially and the highlight just hasn't shown that but in terms of the defensive phase there's absolutely nothing he could reasonably have been expected to do to stop that goal.

this clip is the prime example of the problems of Maguire (as you have mentioned) and Lindelof's gutlessness, how on earth Lindelof didn't do a slide to knock the ball for a throw in?

Thanks to his teammates Maguire gets left covering the entire right channel with a player running at him unopposed and a player running off him behind but somehow he is expected to cover all of that. The only way Maguire manages to defend that situation and stop there being a chance is if he gets lucky and the pass is poor.

He takes a step inside to stop the pass going in-between him and Lindelof that would put Watkins clean through on goal in a central position. Instead Watkins goes clean through on the angle in harder posistion to finish from. If dalot hadn't bizzarely decided to charge into midfield just as the villa player broke through midified and dubrakva hadn't been slow to react it may have been a different outcome.

For what it's worth his performance was ok overall nothing outstanding but I think he did ok. We kept villa at arm's length for most of the game and he kept the line high enough to allow us to have an effective high press for most of the game.

Very appropriate description . On top of the delay in response, the lag also causes you to over or under hit your passes!

He was lucky not get a second yellow in the second half. I think the ref was a little lenient there and he got away with one. I think it was a pull on Watkins at the half way line.

The analysis of the first goal (and honestly, the second as well) is a classic case of "We conceded, it must be the centre backs' fault".

In both cases, Maguire (first goal) and Lindelof (second) are being blamed for not being able to track two players at the same time. The wider issue in both cases is the fact that everyone except these two is high up the pitch and also fail to get back quick enough to offer cover.

Was absolutely useless last night, he's got to be the worst captain we've ever had, surely? He's our 4th choice CB and rightfully so.
