He played a half against a team that didn't leave their own half for most of the game and didn't do anything wrong.

It's a start. But should he play against West Ham? Nope, not unless Lindelof or Martinez are injured.

Yes, it’s good to have him back now Varane is out again, Martinez and Lindelöf have done well and should continue, but it’s nice not to be one injury away from having to use McTominay as a CB.

He just got back from a long injury and did ok. People should stop put every performance of him under the microscope and more importantly they should support him. I'm dissapointed in some of ours fans reactions last night. Clearly a few booed him which is unacceptable.

Every player that tries his best for the club should be supported by our fans. If he is not good enough he should go yes but for the time he is in our team people, especially our fans should support him. We will need him in the next few month with our extreme schedule this year.
He became a walking meme and is constantly rediculed and harrased online even by our own fanbase and this is just a shame. Nobody should get that amount of abuse.

He did fine. Last night the game was played in front of him. The problems will come when he faces players that will run at him and in behind him.

Put in a competent performance. The competition was underwhelming, but one step at a time.

Might not be the stupidest idea to start him against West Ham to try and counter Scamacca in the air.

Yes I would also start him against West Ham. Because we know that Moyes is going to get those crossing going.

Had to look it up as didn't realise how tall he is - 6ft 5!

I'd definitely start him otherwise it might be quite amusing him against Martinez

He did quite alright yesterday. Hopefully this will give him the confidence to keep on improving. We need Maguire and Lindelof to step up more than ever.

Nope but I keep seeing people saying it, where has this nonsense come from?!
No idea tbh. I remember when he got booked against Chelsea tonnes of folk were saying it in the match day thread. Glad he’s playing though.

"Fine, alright, competent." It isn't worth evaluating a performance like that. Even when their left winger got some space on a single occasion, Maguire managed to drop too far back and was 5 yards behind the defensive line because he is fecking terrified of speed.

The man hasn't started a game and won since Norwich last season. 12 games without a win as a starter. His only wins since Norwich last season are 10 minutes against Arsenal while we were 3-1 up. 1 minute against Sheriff away and 45 against them last night.

He is a spectacular weakness for us. Every opposition team knows it. My heart fecking sinks when he is in the team and I bet his teammates do as well.

Well you definitely seem to be taking a rational viewpoint.

He's shite. Why sugarcoat it after years of evidence?

He has no place in this team, not even as a squad player, if the type of football we are playing currently is to advance.

Should get a start with Varane still out. Expecting good things of him with Martinez and Casemiro providing support.

Per EtH’s choices this season, the RCB role is Lindelof’s to lose until either Varane were to return or Lindelof plays badly. In no way should Maguire start on Sunday, unfortunate to be injured but others have played well in his absence. Meritocracy.

Now Fat Sam has joined his bandwagon saying that ETH is biased against him. FFS.

But Shaw has reclaimed his place, Rashford & Sancho continue to get chances despite fan requests, McTom has been given time to improve.

Perhaps EtH is just biased against defenders who are out of their depth.

Absolutely. He said because Martinez is a player he bought. I mean everyone can see that Martinez is a better player than Maguire. All other defenders were here when ETH came.

The English ‘pundits’ do themselves few favours criticising bias, then showing their own towards Maguire simply cause he’s English.

People can go back & forth about just how bad Maguire has been then whether it is actually his fault or not but the fact remains he’s not been good enough. Martinez has been perhaps the stand out CB in the league.

That really is a damning indictment. Normally I don't put much stock in these sorts of patterns since the sample size is usually very small, but twelve games in a row is rather conclusive. When you can genuinely say about a player that the team just doesn't win if he starts, it's impossible to justify keeping him. If we win about 50% of our games overall, but 0% when he starts, it's hard to imagine anybody doing worse. I'd rather grab someone from the youth team when necessary. When you've racked up twelve consecutive starts wherein your team has failed to win, and you're not playing for a relegation candidate where that sort of stat is unsurprising, it's a disaster. How can the manager ever risk starting you again if doing so means that dropping points is almost certain? Twelve starts in a row without a win seems almost irredeemable.

Absolute nonsense.

5 England games included in that so are you also applying the same to the likes of Kane and Rice? Dropping points is 'almost certain' after all.

Then you look at the last 6 games he's started for us. The calamitous end to last season (for the whole team) Liverpool, Brighton and Palace, terrible start to this season Brighton and Brentford and a loss to a non penalty to Sociedad. You can't read anything into it at all.

I will be interested to see if he gets a little run of games at RCB and whether he will be more comfortable there when he’s match fit. I can’t defend his form over the last 18 months but I think when he’s good, he’s excellent.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that the next month might well make or break his career at the top level.

Really hope he does himself justice.

Hopefully he does well, but my bet is he's make mistakes. He looks tense.

It's long broken. Ridiculous that he keeps getting chances to derail us.

:nervous:

i'm sure he'll have a decent game really. The midfield will have huge chunks of the possession and will take the heat off.

We all know he's inevitably going to feck up, he's not the kind of player that rises against adversity.
