I am sick of him being made into a meme like Jones. United fans should be defending our players against this, not joining in. If he plays badly, yes criticise. But don't vilify.

Yeah I think Eriksen has in some way brought an end to the argument that “Pogba needs a proper DM to unlock him”. Eriksen’s already shown he’s been more effective for us even without a proper DM as he’s been doing it alongside Mctominay.
Mctominay is a proper DM for a while under ETH though.

Won't really get a proper chance to judge how he looks with Casemiro in front until he faces Scamacca/Antonio on Sunday

Was booed which sucks as we need to protect our players. Granted he has been shite for a while now. But we need to give him all the chances to get back to where he was back in 19-21.

Yeah personally would be great to see him find that level of form again,it might just be possible under Erik given a few more games

As much as I would like him to move on to another club, he is still our player and we should never boo any of our players individually. I won't mind lashing boo to the team for poor effort collectively. Never should be done to specific individual. Furthermore I don't think he played badly yesterday to deserve that.

Is it confirmed by the fans that were at the game he was booed?

Cause that would really suck.

i was at the game, he got a good reception warming up, good reception when he came on, and was applauded for the good things he did, then there were the ironic calls for him to shoot whenever he had the ball towards the oppositions goal. defiantly no one around me was booing.

But if I got it right crowd was shouting shoot to other players too, not just him?

yes i think towards the end there was more of that, just the way it is when you have so much of the ball so high up the pitch. definitely more towards maguire though but he did see a lot of the ball, think he had 49/51 pass completion including 4 succesful long balls.

He played pretty well. He’s a good player. Nowhere near as useless as many seem to think. Against park the bus opposition he could still be handy, with his switches of play and aerial threat.

Correct. This bizarre groupthink that Maguire is somehow a bad player is complete and utter tosh.

Bereft of confidence and out of form? Yes. A bad player? Not remotely.

Yeah, his confidence seems to have been shot. Training under ETH will do him a world of good just like for other players.

We need him cool headed and on form. You can see his confidence is down to pieces, he need to man up and deliver in the absence of Varane.

I think it was interesting that, when he came on, Lindelof moved to the LCB position and Maguire assumed (what basically is) Varane's position in the defence.

Given that we still use the left side a lot to advance the ball (40%), and that when Rashford plays there we often look for the early ball in-behind, this may have its significance.

It can potentially be a smart move from ETH. Maguire can revitalise his career in a more natural defending role and without the burden of having most of the build-up going through him. Still a very expensive mistake (we forked out the big money expecting him to do what Martinez does. And the latter didn't come cheap, either), but with Varane out, maybe we've found a role for Maguire.

I was at the game, didn't hear him get booed. Did get told to shoot every time he carried the ball forwards though so maybe that was causing confusion.

At the same time, EtH played Martinez and Lindelof together which somewhat indicates they will start this weekend.
You'd expect so, Lindelof seems to be 3rd choice and he's having a pretty decent season, wouldn't make sense to drop him until Varane is back.

Varanes role is also to read the game and predict where he needs to be there before the situation happens. One of Maguires biggest issues is that he is often at the wrong spot and doesnt read the game well.
Maguire did fine yesterday and as a sub he is great to have.

He'll look a much better player now we have more guys who look after the ball. True for all CB's.

I'd have him starting before Lindelof.

Lindelof and Martinez with De Gea in goal is really pushing it. If a team doesn't take advantage of that I'd be amazed.

yep, considering we are playing West Ham who are known for their ariel threat. We will need Maguire in that game.

Varane is clearly the superior defender, no doubt about that. I just don't believe that Maguire is as bad as his last season suggests. He's not an 80 million CB, he's not the one to lead the defence and he's not a modern ball-playing centre-half (which was the number one thing we got wrong when assessing his value), but he can be a solid pure defender. Making him captain with a snap of the fingers, giving him more than he can chew in the build-up and having him defend acres of space (for a side that struggled to keep the ball and was awful at defensive transitions), maybe it was too much to handle. His confidence looked shot. It was an interesting move by ETH yesterday, fewer responsibilities on the ball, just focus on his game. It will be a bonus, if we gain another option at the back.

Absolutely not. He is a much better defender than what we saw last year. Ten Hag's system does not suit him, but against the right opponents he can still be a valuable asset to us, and his physical strength can come in handy for us in certain matches.

Glad he had a decent cameo. Hope he has a good world cup too so we can get a decent fee out of him from a West Ham/Everton type club.

There were definite boos when he came on, which is shocking really. Thankfully they didn't last too long. Not sure where the calls for him to shoot were coming from either given he's hardly prolific. He played as well as he could've done and it was easy out there for him.

He was at the half way line, why would the crowd yell shoot? :wenger:

Maybe he finds some form under ETH. Always good to have as many inform players available as possible

Yep, agreed with this. Will be important especially with the WC this year and then the influx of games we will have. The good thing is weve played a lot of the top half teams already, and I can see him being useful when we have more possession. He could also make a difference (hopefully) with set pieces if he can bring some of his England form on that to United.

He played a half against a team that didn't leave their own half for most of the game and didn't do anything wrong.

It's a start. But should he play against West Ham? Nope, not unless Lindelof or Martinez are injured.
