Hard to respect him as a captain when he has zero personality, has more relegations than trophies and refuses to take any accountability for his poor performances. Not surprised there's a faction in the dressing room which believes he shouldn't be captain.

Why the club isn't putting him up for sale after last season is embarrassing, it goes to show we are too sentimental, I remember Bayern had the same problem with Hummels but they Ditch him after two seasons did same too with Götze, that's how a proper clubs works.

One of the problems at Our club is we take to much time in realising a player isn't just good enough, we romance things get too attached so much that even when it's clear as day light that he's shit as they come, we somehow seem to be able to find an excuses like "Maguire needs a partner" which ironically has a thread.
I agree 100%

Maguire hasn't been shit for us for 2 seasons yet though so let's see how he does this season and what we do as a result before moaning yeah?

Besides we wasted no time getting rid of Lukaku and Alexis when we realised they were bad buys

Barca asking for him is obvious nonsense. They need money to balance their books not slabheads.

Blatantly us briefing this to try and generate a sense of Maguire being "wanted". Probably even with Barca's blessing.
This seems very far fetched

Think this is fair. I think Maguire is solid without being world-class and had a really good second half first two seasons with us (think we missed him through injury in the season we lost the Europa League final)

No way we would include our Captain in the FDJ deal.

Maguire will be so important for ETH, now we will have quite a few who can actually pass the ball.

Ten Hag is going to like Maguire and start him regularly and some people in here are going to lose their shit.

If he gets any of them playing well and full of confidence no one should lose their shit. But your right they will.

I could see Harry functioning well in a possession based set up as he has certain qualities that makes him suitable for it but he simply is to slow and sometimes he makes me seriously doubt his footballing sense and positional awareness.
If ten hag gets him playing as the world class player that we payed for he deserves every single accolade coming his way.

Hopefully Varane stays fit as his pace would be paramount in us playing such a style.

A huge problem Maguire has had over the past season is that he has seemed to be caught in two minds between stepping out of the defensive line to act as an aggressor (closing down players and attempting to win the ball) and holding position to cover off attacking runs. This has often meant he won't fully commit to either course of action, and as a consequence leaves gaps for players to run into without closing off passing options for the player on the ball. The first Liverpool goal at Anfield, where Maguire fails to properly close down Mane, is a perfect example of this.

This is why I make the argument that Ten Hag's high-line will probably help and not hinder Maguire. Within this setup, Maguire will almost certainly be told to be the aggressive centre back (this is what he's best at and we don't really have another regularly fit centre back who can do it) and, with a clear strategy for the defensive unit, we should see fewer moments where he's caught in two minds.

Should be first out of the door but his wages wont allow that.

The United fans that continuously defend Maguire, want Henderson in net, think Ole was the answer and Mctominay should be captain are f*cking scary. Very very scary.

I'd stick with Maguire simply because we have an actual manager now, and he's shown decent form before.
If he has a poor time this season then he has to be dropped and looked to be moved on after that. But you can't just give up on an 80m signing this early.

Henderson I never overly bought the hype, I think he benefitted from having loads of practice in a crap team, which always makes a keeper look better, and also benefitted from De Gea's terrible spell.

McTom has some battling qualities, but should never be a guaranteed starter, which will always rule someone out of being captain.

To be honest, the priority should be that the captaincy is removed. Such a bad fit for that role, blaming others and trying to protect his own perception at all costs. Maybe he can rediscover some sort of form this season but I fear the damage is done.

Henderson is simply not good enough. Mctominay is so far below the standard, it's like a glaring hole 9/10 times you see him play.

Here is an example of Narrative FC.

If a fan likes Maguire means they have to love Henderson, Ole and Mct?

Its just basic thinking this.

If Maguire is capable of following EtH’s instructions he’ll be an absolutely key part of the side. I’m not altogether convinced that he will be able or willing to though.

Weird isn’t it?

I suppose it could be argued that the defence (NOT just Maguire) looked more comfortable with Henderson behind them, though I wasn’t terribly convinced of it. What the heck that has to do with Ole or McTominay though…

Apparently, you cant like one without liking all, its like a package deal.

Its cringeworthy if I am honest. The fact is that regardless of who we played as CB, we got smashed last season.

People talk about Ole but he wasn't in charge for more than half the season, nothing changed. Weird huh?

I'm happy to give him another chance as a player I just don't want to see him wearing the armband next season. He's not a leader and he never will be.

Harry will be delighted to know that I have decided I am willing to give him another chance.

I have made this decision based on not having any other choice other than being a miserable bastard for at least another year.

I don't like Maguire much, but it is obvious he plays much better when he has a vocal and commanding presence behind him. Schmeichel, Pickford, Henderson are all vocal and commanding keepers, who constantly organise, talk and are commanding their area.

DDG is a goal line mute, every defender that plays in front of him struggles with his total lack of communication, organisation and his inability to command his area.

If it were up to me, him and DDG would get the boot. Highest paid GK and most expensive defender ever. Yet they are the mainstays in a defence that concedes on average over a goal a game. Clearly they have contrasting styles and do not work well together.

I want Maguire as captain and starter and i want Henderson, Mctominay away from OT.

Your " i put all people in one basket" is very scary.

Maguire was our worst starting player last season. He should NOT captain anymore.
If we get Martinez or Timber he shouldn't even be in the starting lineup. Unless he completely transforms under Ten Hag of course.

Except I didn't say all people at all. Just the ones who's judgement is so poor that they rate all 3 players and Ole.

I see it more as an extension of being pro-solskjaer as they were 3 players he tried to build the spine of his team around.

Have to say, I feel like we are trying to move him on.

I think if he loses captaincy, and we sign a CB, I just don’t see how he survives.

I don't question his willingness; it's his ability that worries me.

league goals conceded for teams Maguire played in:

Sheffield 11-12: 51 goals conceded in LEAGUE ONE
Sheffield 12-13: 42 goals conceded in LEAGUE ONE
Sheffield 13-14: 46 goals conceded in LEAGUE ONE
Wigan 14-15: 64 goals conceded in CHAMPIONSHIP
Hull City 15-16: 35 goals conceded in CHAMPIONSHIP
Hull City 16-17: 80 goals conceded in Premier League
Leicester: 17-18: 60 goals conceded in Premier League
Leicester: 18-19: 48 goals conceded in Premier League
Man Utd: 19-20: 36 goals conceded in Premier League
Man Utd: 20-21: 44 goals conceded in Premier League
Man Utd: 20-21: 57 goals conceded in Premier League

11 seasons of professional football, with 5 seasons played in inferior leagues, still only managed to secure "concede less than 1 goal per game on average" seasons TWICE in his career. this is embarrassing since it shows that he couldn't even boss the League One and Championship attackers.

He has never been part of any compact and hard to penetrate defenses at club level. Bad luck of always siding with bad teammates? or he is the problem instead?

Fair enough.

His lack of agility is a bit of a concern, but I don’t think there’s a lot missing ability-wise. He just comes across as rather a stubborn Yorkshireman!

I don't know where some of the confidence is coming from. CB is the one position we've already been linked with several targets so it's not even that much of a stretch to speculate he isn't simply content with his options. We can't exactly have that much room in our budget for luxury signings. If ETH uses a chunk of his kitty to buy a new CB they will probably be featured extensively. Also looks like ETH seems to value athleticism in his defenders so I'm double doubtful anything is guaranteed. Think like everyone else he will have to fight for his place.

Maguire deserves time till the next window at least. His slowness with and without the ball worries me though.

Still think he’s underestimated. Played really well for England, I thought, in the Nations League. Southgate plays him as the RCB which I think is his better position.

We have a good head coach now, so lack of coaching can't be used as an excuse this season. Let's see what he can do

He is not underestimated. He is just a defender who is good for one system and not for other. Play him in deep line and in 3 at the back and he will be very very good.
But for attacking team, with 4 at the back and in high line, he is huge liability.

If we manage to get Eriksen to take the corners he might actually score some goals with that huge head of his next season. Maybe that will make up for the goals his lack of agility will cost us... you win some, you lose some.

I've never seen a player improve so much without playing. He was atrocious last season and pretty poor the season before (contrary to belief on this forum) The only way of progressing is without him, he's one of the worst defenders I've ever seen. No postional sense, slow as a boat, constant basic errors. The only fans defending him are deluded United fans (similar to Pogba)

That's a April's fools day quote

If the Barcelona quotes about wanting him were true, why didn't we sell him?

He's the biggest fraud after Paul Pogba to play for this club.

VVD would struggle on a team with no DM and a keeper who keeps his mouth shut and stands on his line. If you think our defense was bad last year when Maguire played, then you obviously didn't watch the games when he didn't play. In January Maguire only played one game. Vs West Ham. De Gea only had to make one save for the entire match. For the rest of the games in January De Gea had to make more saves than any other keeper in the league and ended up getting the EPL player of the month award. And we didn't play City, LIverpool and Chelsea. We played Villa, Brentford and Wolves. But go on....tell us more about how Maguire is the problem...
