I had convinced myself he wasn't a #1 CB but could be the physical header of the ball it makes sense to have as a #2 CB in the Prem next to a proper organizer, but goddamn he's shambolic every couple weeks now.

The worst world's most expensive defender since the time when PSG paid 50M for David Luiz in 2014, and I rate Luiz a little bit better.

Who should we have bought then?
For £85m there would have been a handful of better options. City just got Ruben Dias for less but let’s assume he would’ve been the same a year ago (pre-covid).

Tarkowski is better and would’ve been less if we wanted British premier league talent (an odd obsession of ours last summer). If we actually had a scouting system we could’ve found a hidden gem but those sort of signings are such a thing of the past for us.

He was the best available defender when we brought him(Although of course we over paid)and the stats clearly show he's improved our defense but god he perfectly sums up how shit the current state of modern defending is.

Harry needs a reset.......

Do you think its in his head? ie: confidence is low because he is mentally broken due to Greece?

Why would that affect him to the extent it would break him mentally? Loads of people get arrested and have run ins with the law, doesn't break them.

He needs a break from the game and the spotlight and get his head together. Hopefully not being on international duty helps. No shame in it. Bigger and better players have needed that sort of gap whilst playing for us.

He is a very good defender by today's standards; nothing more, nothing less. But, through no fault of his own, he is the most expensive defender in the history of the game who had the captaincy of the biggest club in the world thrust at him after a few months. The guy's never won a trophy in his career.

It just looks like it's all too much for him right now.

His triple error wild chicken impersonation contribution to Spurs first goal is indicative of his start to this season. Totally unsure of himself, and enable to set the tone for the defence he leads. It's uncharacteristic.

Looks that way.

Have no idea tbh. It's possible.

It's sort of silly to say but this United team imo doesn't seem the brightest. The goals we let in tend to be from individual mistakes unlike say Liverpool who let in 7 today but this was due to a system failure(Very high line and trying to play from the back).

The goal that got spurs back into the game is good example of individual errors. Bailly heads the ball up in the air and then Maguire doesn't head for back to De Gea and then at one point Maguire had his hand on Shaw in his own box. I guess the question is, is it possible to coach stupidity out of players ? A similar thing happened last season in the second spurs game in lockdown.

The numbers don't lie Maguire is clearly important for our defense and with his price tag the only realistic option is to cover up his weakness as best as we can.

Which is a very depressing thing to say about our 80 million pound captain.

Ruben Dias is crap and there is a good poster on here who is familiar with the Portuguese league and he stated that Lindelof looked the more accomplished defender while at Benfica than Dias did so I think that should be a good indicator of how that will go.
I have no doubt that we paid heavily over the top for Maguire but when you look at what else was on offer there were a few young players playing in different leagues that could have been an option but as soon as it is us interested we are quoted 50mil plus and in my eyes that is probably a bigger risk than paying the money we did for a 25yo proven Premier league international.

The best contribution he's had for United so far, was to make a Whatsapp Group.

You have not provided a link between this form and his exploits in Greece.

I think Ferguson in his peak would have seen Maguire in the trouble he was in and see it might affect his game mentally and not play him in every game on the restart, and see that Pogba is coming back from a virus and not start him in every league game. It's a farcical season anyway but compare Maguire and Pogba to just 3 months ago and it's all of their worst traits out at once. And then if you try to understand reasons why, there are obvious possible reasons why.

It seems our defense is getting turns on who is able to have the worst performance. First game was Lindelof, second was AWB and now Maguire. Its amazing how we manage to get such poor performances from them.

Who should we have bought then?
Did I just get transported to an alternate reality where Maguire was the last Centreback on earth? because that's the only justification for posing that question with a straight face.

Ole and the island council of coaches are soft and learning by doing mistakes. The team lack pragmatic hardness.

We paid a world record price for a pretty average to decent CB, not world class by any stretch of the imagination. We got rinsed but of course it was going to happen as we didn't seem to have any other players in mind but him and everyone knew that. Our lack of planning and scouting is shambolic for a so called big club.

Rest assured a few weeks later, we'll again see people quote the number of goals conceded last season and praise Maguire for his ball playing ability.

Well it definitely sounds like you are not from around here

I don’t understand why his transfer fee keeps popping up. That’s not his fault. The club decided he was worth that insane amount of money, not him.

I’ve said it many times, he was never an elite defender, he is not an elite defender and he will never be an elite defender.

He only looks good because he’s big and tall. I could put a feckin boulder there and it would serve the same purpose. He doesn’t really excel at anything. He doesn’t win enough headers considering his height and build. He’s a worse jersey grabber than Smalling. His passing ability isn’t even that good, but that could be because of the teammates around him as well.

Ole will never have the balls to drop him because of the insane money we paid for him.

However, all these is on our scouting department. Maguire is not an unknown player, he isn’t an 18 year old from Chad. He’s been in the English game his entire career, yet our scouts decided that he’s worth whatever money Leicester demanded for him.

The only real fault of Maguire is that feckin stupid goal celebration of his.

A few things at play here - The price the club paid to Leicester isn't his fault. There are no two ways about it. I also don't think his Greek misadventure is responsible for his current piss poor form. What I think is Leicester were about his level back then. He has not made the step up to become the United captain that we all want him to be. He has been slow forever and he needs the right set up to bring the best out of him - his best being his Leicester form, which I still believe is a level below what we're expecting of him at United.

Ultimately for the price paid, he was handed a 6 year contract and for the contract handed, the expectation was that he should be the solid rock in our defense, who could lead us for years and thus was made captain.

We don't play to his strengths, he hasn't made the transition or the step up from Leicester to being a United captain and defender.

One of the ways of trying to tackle this is to provide the coaching he needs to make the step up or we buy a fast and better defender who can cover his mistakes or we all cut our loses and move him on in the next summer. None of these are easy, so I would assume that we're stuck with him in his current avatar - plain and simple.

Overrated and overvalued and nothing special. He would be an ok signing if he only cost us 20-30m back in last summer though, and would be disappointing signing if cost 40-50m. At 80m he is mega flop. Of cos money we have spent would be related to our expectation of the player (for example 1m spend in James vs 15m vs 150m would be day and night different)

Never a top class defender as he is too slow to stop any counter attack or cover for anyone in high tempo game, can’t organize anything at the back, very bad at playing high line defence, and prone to stupid mistake. I am afraid he is a 5/10 defender overall for us, or at best he is 6/10 base on last season form. On current form this season he is 4/10 or lower. For someone we’ve spend 80m on, I would expect a 9/10, or 8/10 at the very least.

He is huge disappointment.

As Captain he should have gone out to speak to the press. fecking moron
This. I watched VVD speak to the media after their shitshow but I expected him to do that. What’s Maguire’s reason? He’s the captain it’s his job to go out there and take the blame.
he’ll have no problem cashing his cheque though.

He did make a twitter or IG post which kinda made me laugh

The fooking state of the captain being shit scared to go in front of the cameras after playing a key role in our humiliating defeat. I have ten times more respect for Shaw than the slabhead.

My god this was bad. I hate people going at Harry for a number of reasons, but my god that was so baaad. All of them were bad but Harry in particular.

Btw. Something s gone awfully south with the way our fullbacks position themselves. AWB vs BHA, and Shaw last night were off the field.
