The man needs a mental break. The armband wears too heavily on him and his brush with Greek law enforcement has rattled his cage. Best if he gets some help for his head, and maybe physically too, and comes back after 3 or 4 matches off. We’re not blessed with abundant talent at CB but we have warm bodies who are better than the Harry Maguire we’ve seen so far this season.

He will come good. I can promise you this. I've seen Maguire at Leicester and he was not this bad. This tells me that he isn't his normal self. Getting beaten for pace is one thing but the way he's performing now is mind blowing. It has to be a blip and I believe it will be.
With same defense last season we hardly allowed any team to take shot inside our penalty box. We were that good. Something drastically went wrong in lasy 3 matches. I don't believe it is just players but I suspect some coaching instructions have large part to play. Whatever it is Ole needs to sort this out asap. I am not a big fan of Harry but I agree with you that he is not that bad as he appears to be recently.

Agreed, Victor and Harry gets tons of abuse these days but they played almost every minute last season where we conceded less than a goal per game on avg, 0,95 goals/game to be precise. To be compared with Liverpool who were amazing defensively and had 0,87. Our entire team has been shocking at the start for some reason.

This is what I'm saying. Maguire has his limitations and not worth the 80 mil but that Totenham performance was very weird and a complete new low.

Yeah does seem that way. I don't think he's as bad as some others - certainly based on last year's good defensive record - but he's started this year v. poorly.

I hope all is okay with Harry but if it's still the same after the next few games then perhaps we should drop him for a game or two.

Problem I guess is we don't have a like-for-like swap. Bailly and Lindelof sounds like a rubbish partnership on paper.

The foul on Luke Shaw was amazing. I've never seen anything like it.

He needs a break.

Just look at him. Look at him. He has no awareness at the player in front of him is a Man Utd player. Same as when he went careering into the back of Bailly in the FA Cup semi final. He just has no idea what's going on around him. He only sees the ball. Its like the world around him fades to black and he just sees the ball. If he just stands in front of Lamela and lets Shaw deal with it... :wenger:

Totally agree. He looks a shadow of the player he was, as does AWB, perhaps both need 3 or 4 weeks break. We don't know how the greek court case is affecting him, perhaps he is guilty of the some the accusations, and it is perhaps weighing heavily on his mind, but I'm only surmising. Saying that, we don't appear to have any protection in front of them, Matic is still a decent player, but for a couple of seasons now we've seen a decrease in his physical ability to close down quick, and cover runs into the box. He certainly plays better when we have Fred or sometimes McTominay alongside him. Pogba just doesn't do anything in my opinion, he certainly has not looked 'world class' for some time. Too much space for opposing teams to play in. I think Ole has done well so far, but he needs to make some big decisions on Maguire, Pogba, AWB and Matic, don't play them every game, be strong and leave them out.

Maguire’s excuse for being poor is Greece. AWB’s is Dubai, Pogba’s is Covid, Rashford’s is the back injury from last season.

Could it not just be that the players are being picked and played in a system that’s unsuitable for them, thus making the coaching team the common denominator?

I mean, we’re playing de Gea who rarely comes off his line. Then we’re using a high line with slow defenders. We expect our wing backs to attack but play AWB who can’t do that. We use Pogba in a role where we expect him to protect the defence together with Matic, and then we wonder why we’re not performing well.

There is a cloud over utd and only time will tell why so many appear void of confidence. Harry is not alone and I wonder if players know Ole is on his way out. It would make a lot of sense about a number of things including the transfer window....

That is a fair point and when it come sto the team as whole is most likely true but it doesn't explain how Maguire was self-destructive vs Spurs. The stuff in Greece may be playing on his mind, hence the 'performance' vs Spurs.

True, that was just a series of brainfarts, but I always have a hard time believing the narrative that a player goes to head the ball and all of a sudden a Greek police officer pops up in his mind.

But I suppose that any of the first XI players could be performing poorly in training for weeks on end without being taken out of the side by this manager, since he just picks his best players on paper (ie the 11 biggest names) in his 4-2-3-1 and hopes it goes well.

Maybe now we try out Shaw as lcb. Also weird how we all just forgot about Tuanzebe... I had the impression he was a sure thing?

Bit of a difference

Maguire had the worst game i've ever seen a defender at this club have and directly cost us 3, maybe 4 goals, but he is still a good player underneath it all. The whole team is working under a black cloud after our summer and he is far from alone in being shite at the moment.

Before this weekend, I thought give him time. But after the Tottenham game, enough is enough. This player has to be stripped of the captaincy and dropped. He is that shite. I think Phil Jones would do better than this guy. Seriously. What a complete waste of £80 million.

Would be interesting to see what Maguire did after that? I’m not that keen to watch much of that game again!

However, The ref was incredibly quick to whip out the card, it’s not as it he had time to react in the moment of that photo. I’m not defending his performance, but one photo doesn’t evaluate his captaincy.

Watching the first goal trying to figure out what happened, I don't think he himself has faith in the defenders around him, which in itself becomes a hindrance. Instead of leaving it to Shaw to clear he dragged him down leading to the goal, although Shaw should absorb some blame as he was dwelling on the ball hoping DDG would collect it and should of booted it straight away.

Same with the Bailly incident against Chelsea, going for the same header, and am sure there was another incident in another game where he clatters into his own player when trying to clear the ball.

Again. Where are the ‘My captain, O captain’ brigade at now?

People were questioning this signing last summer, horrendous piece of business.

The more you watch the Shaw incident & reflect on the Southampton goal last season, him being ran around by a relegated team [Bournemoth] only to be saved embarrassment by our attack; the more infuriating our inability to spend big this Summer becomes - he’s the new Fellaini, a testament to the OgS reign & an albatross that will continue to get chances due to his fee not his ability.

Sh*te!

Or maybe massively over hyped. As in Britain it is tradition.

We need a dm badly to help protect the back 4, imo we should consider maguire for that role since he is the passer among our cb. Bailly with Rojo or Tuanzebe should be considered as our cb pairing.

To think he's on a 7 year contract and that even his captain privileges wasn't affected despite him being convicted.

So he's all for believing people reviewing evidence, but not eye witnesses? Sound guilty as feck to me, for Greek incidents now.

In fairness he was probably protecting Rashford from getting a yellow card. Still don't think he should be captain though.

It’s mental how that I almost dislike him as much as I do Victor Lindelof.

Why didn't he do the protest himself? He's the captain.

We all saw him not being in the midst to protest at all. Now he's backing the ref outloud. How about "Let me handle it?"

Gobshite.

So he was aware of the elbow but didn’t even feel the need to question the ref for parity or ask the ref to check the screen.

No he wasn't. Rashy was more puzzled rather than he was protesting the card. He was the one who saw the entire episode unfold right in front of his eyes, he should have shown a bit of leadership and courage to defend his team-mate.
