After sleeping on this and reflecting on this, it's not really a shock where we are.
If we take the Manchester United name off this team and replace it with Everton or Southampton, what would we say? We would say:
- This team can't score goals.
- This team can't defend, especially set pieces. This team gives away too many cheap goals.
- This team is not very mobile in the middle.
- This team are not very creative in the middle.
- This team are very poor out wide. Whether we play wingbacks or fullbacks, they can't really attack and hinder us going forward.
- This team is very inexperienced in places, especially in the attacking areas.
- This team has a goal keeper who was brought in for his kicking, but he often resorts to lumping it up the pitch anyway. Questionable handling skills and shot stopping.
- This team is very poorly assembled. When this club sells an underperforming or expensive player, we have more often than not replaced them with another expensive player who underperforms. Usually worser quality than the one we originally sold in the first place.
- This team are very lazy and are consistently out-run and out-fought in every match. Their reaction times are very slow. Their ability to problem solve on the pitch is very poor.
If we take the Manchester United name off that team above and replace it with Everton or Southampton, we would say that's a team that's far closer to the bottom of the league than the top. Can this team get relegated? Absolutely. If we don't win games, we don't pick up points, and if you don't pick up points, you slide down the table. This team are poor enough where relegation is a possibility. We would ask how are these players going to win games. There is no magic code that we can insert into this program to get them scoring goals. They are individually very poor players, but are even worse as a collective as they don't have any cohesion to work as a team.
In short, bar a very, very small handful, they need to go. Until that happens, I don't know how we are going to win games with these players. We actually had opportunities to score last night (the Casemiro chance, the Hojlund chance) and both were wasted. It's very concerning, but not surprising as this is the culmination of years and years of malpractice.
