Gylfi Sigurdsson

Interesting development!

Spurs are the club i'm most interested in this summer (outside of United). With some decent signings they really could make the step up.

Perhaps it's his dad. Apparently very new to twitter and basically signed up to rubbish all the reports that were going on.

Sigurð Aðalsteinsson ‏@S_Adalsteinsson
Delighted to announce that gylfi will sign for #thfc deal will be announced later today hopefully he looks forward to working with AVB

Who is this guy? Is he pretending to be his dad/manager?

Fake. google.translate icelandic tweets from him and his name Sigurð isn't real, it should be Sigurður.

That could be his own mistake. I can confirm it in a little bit.

Edit: It's indeed fake. The picture on it is actually of some British lawywr

One glimpse and it's quite apparent that it's not real.

Morgunbladid is (I gather) the best newspaper in Iceland and according to an Icelandic Spurs fan it says today: "... Gylfi Þór Sigurddson is very likely to be AVB's first new player at Tottenham, and it's expected to be announced tomorrow."

He probably will go there but Morgunblaðið didn't really say it. It's not in the papers and it's not on their internet equivalent http://www.mbl.is.

Why do you say it's the best paper? Certainly the oldest and their logo is one that your teams former sponsor Mansion basically ripped off.

I think he's a good little player. Kind of like an Arteta in that they're useful to have around, but they won't drive the team toward world domination. Big clubs need these player types. Lord knows we have them.

Then again, if they treat him the same way they do Dos Santos what's the point?

He plays the same role as van der Vaart and they don't need him but at £9m he'll be a decent signing.

Isn't VdV supposed to be going back to Germany? I guess Sigardsson is a direct replacement for him, and both at a similar price.

I didn't know this but checked right now and indeed Schalke seems to be really interested.

lets be honest, is gylfi in the same class as VDV?

I think not. However, he is much younger so age and wage wise it probably helps spurs.

No idea why I just did this:

How do you know that ? Maybe Rodgers wasn't prepared to pay him the high wages he was demanding until he proves himself.

High wages he was demanding? Liverpool weren't prepared to pay him more than what Swansea were paying. 15k per week. Shelvey is probably making more than that.

henderson makes 4 times that.

i think what happened was rogers knew exactly the figure gylfi was prepared to take to stay at swansea so found no reason to offer him him at liverpool.

however, rogers obviously does not know any concepts in behavioral economics as wage/salary acceptance by an employee most of the times is driven mainly by how it compares to his peers and not so much the actual figure.

Spuds offered much higher and vermin didn't budge. fair fecks to gylfi though i find him a bit overrated.

This is a top class assessment of our new signing:

Four things that is good about Gylfi Sigurdsson
By Eurosport | Paul Parker – 2 hours 4 minutes ago

Gylfi Sigursson is an exciting signing for Tottenham, but he is also high-risk.

1 - He is a player who can kick the ball good and spurs need a player who can kick the ball good because if the ball goes in the goal then you score more goals. This might not sound like a big deal but it is because goals can often win you games.

2 - He is young and that means he isn't old which is good because he will play with more fitness and stamina and be able to run around for a longer time. Spurs already have old players like Friedel and Parker (not me) and their bald goalkeeper but Sigurdsson is not old like them.

3 - Corners. This is a bit like my first point but is just as important because corners are things that happen in football games. He is good at corners and spurs aren't good at corners normally so he should be a good addition to the team for parts of the game when the ball is at the corner flag and someone needs to kick it into the box.

4 - He is from Iceland. This might not sound important at first but it is because there is lots of snow in iceland and snow is white and spurs also play in white. This means he will fit in straight away at Tottenham and when players feel at home they can often be better at playing football. However sometimes games are played not at home and this might be a risk when sigurdsson is concerned because he won't be playing in a snow coloured kit.

This must be some kind of joke on Parker's expense. But he has a point. Gylfi shoot ball good.

It depends which AVB they get as manager though... They've still got a number of areas to strangthen before they make the step up IMO too. They need a centre half, probably a GK, centre mid (If Modric goes) and they're absolutely desperate for a striker.

Couldn't a whole host of limited Spurs midfielders 'shoot the ball good' in the past? Huddlestone being one of them?

Not saying he won't be a good player, but its not like we've missed out on Van Der Vaart. :wenger:

So, I watched Sigurdsson for Hoffenheim a few times, but I was disappointed really, let down really. Has he improved that drastically in the last twelve months?

To actually qualifying for the Champions League or not imploding at the first run of tricky fixtures?

Depends on when you watched him at Hoffenheim and what you were disappointed by.

Loved his set-pieces but he drifted in and out the games far too much - didn't seem to stamp much authority on the matches when he played.

One playing for Swansea and the other Tottenham, you got stats for goals assists per minute ?

He said in an interview that the decision wasn't really hard. Tottenham have ambition to go back in the CL and stay there. Their style of play was important, that they played good football. He also said that having Lennon and Bale on the wings suits him very well and that Bale signed an extension helped out. Also that they have brand new training facilities that will be finished in a months time.

The way he talked seems to me that it hardly mattered at all that Rodgers was the manager at Liverpool. Squad, style of play in previous seasons, how they've done in the league. All factors in. Maybe as well the fact that he's a United fan but he'll probably never say that on the record.

Will be interesting to see if AVB will play both him and VDV together somehow. Wouldn't think so.
