Gun control

The gun laws will only change once the mid80s-90s generation are in charge of everything.

Nothing changed after Sandy Hook where 20 kids were shot, I really doubt anything will change after this one either unfortunately. Especially with that clown sat in the White House.

As a Brit i will never, ever understand the fetishisation of guns by Americans. It’s just so fecking weird and strange.

It’s not just a dull, piece of metal used for destruction, but a sacred object that has to be worshipped. It’s a truly bizarre thing.

Even worse is seeing them used as a substitute for toys. Kids posing with their bejewelled, pink and fluffy AR-15s is particularly chilling.

The other thing is, i know people like to throw out the phrase “gun nuts” in describing these people, but they’re not. The gun culture is so pervasive that it encompasses everyone. Rich or poor, north or south, it doesn’t matter.

I’m not sure if such a broad cultural change can even be implemented, or where it can even start.

I wouldn't count on that, I have friends from Atlanta in their early 30s and they are just as addicted to guns and their right to have them as the older generation.

The older generation gun owners I know are in to old fashioned rifles, hunting, pistols, etc... not the new tech weapons that you build yourself. There are exceptions but my younger generation friends are the ones into building assault rifles.

Comment is bang on.
While I completely agree with gun control, you don't need any of those "mandatory" items to own a car. You need them to operate on public roads. You can own a car without a licence, insurance, proper mental health etc etc. Likewise in some states you can own a gun but need a license to operate it/ carry it outside of your private home.

Worrying, it really is

Anyone curious about why more action isn't taken on guns - its because of the Government can't solve our problems mentality.

Jesus christ.

The right often make this argument - if more law abiding citizens were armed they could take out people like this much quicker and avoid the mass casualties. The tendency is therefore tilted towards further securitization, not more anti-gun regulations.

Would love to know how they'd propose to take out someone hundreds of feet away in the air with a bunch of handguns - unless he's on about the concertgoers having more long range weapons. Either way it'd end up with a lot more dead.

what a load of bull from this lady... first she's saying that wwe all just need more Religion to fix the problem, then only mentions one thing (background checks) as if its the only measure of gun control possible. There are so many things possible to outlaw and prohibit while still having an avid gun culture. To avoid this specific problem a ban on ALL semi automatic weapons should be implimented and limited rounds available for purchase and carry out side of sanctioned gun clubs/ ranges just to name a few could have stopped this or at least made it incredibly difficult and expensive to pull off.

If US citizens feel the need to own an M16 then fine, they can only carry and operate it in sanctioned areas like gun ranges where they can buy as many bullets and fire as many targets as they see fit. That shit needs to be regulated now man, its too damn loose. How can you not even have a guns balistics tied to its owner? how can you even own ghost guns. its just mind boggling. There must be a compromise, but obviously once the NRA exist that wont happen

She's making the usual weak argument that comes from the right that good governance is when the government doesn't govern.

It'd be a chain of law abiding citizens shooting each other. Crowd is under fire, first law abiding citizen draws his gun and seeks a target, next law abiding citizen sees guy with gun in a crowd being shot at, so draws his own gun to shoot him. Next law abiding citizen in the crowd being shot at sees a guy shooting a guy and therefore draws his gun to shoot him... repeat until last man standing.

Always found it strange that a party that is so entwined in religion and God doesnt want rules and regulations

It's staggering to me that this even needs to be explained.

I'm certain Damien doesn't need that explained and it was not my intention to do so, it's just how that scene unfolded in my imagination. Kind of funny in a very fecked up way, too.

Damo definitely doesn't need it explaining, I was referring to the feckwits that make that argument.

I have meant to joke about Bazookas in vending machines but that seems wrong.

It's such a stupid argument. Rather than take his gun away, let's give everyone else one and what, wait for them to take the law into their own hands? Or do you get rid of the problem at source and let the police do their job, instead of trusting civilians to act correctly in the name of vigilantism.

If a toddler grabbed hold of a power tool, would you take it off him, or would you think "that could be dangerous - let's see if he figures out how to turn it on while I go and get my angle grinder."

I like Ben Shapiro but I don't think he came across all that well here. Being in favour of guns because you fear government tyranny is a little outdated, isn't it?

The government have tanks, do you want one of those too?

The funny thing is that all the first 10 amendments except the second have been challenged and been interpreted by judges in relatively modern times.

1st amendment (free speech) has been altered/modified based on several important Supreme Court cases.

As mentioned the second amendment allows for arms for a militia. If people wish to own 18th century muskets with musette bags and form a militia, then be my guest. Anything else is not allowed according to the constitution.

Is this right? Surely this cant be right can it? If my maths is correct here, then with a population of around 320 Million, then 23% of that is 75 million (roughly) who own over 300 million guns between them? FML! That's insane.

I've just googled though and they have a lower figure of only around 45 million gun owners, which is even worse. The minority really do shout louder in this case. Feck.

This number is misleading since there might be typically just one gun owner per household but all members of the household may support gun ownership. This 75m number might easily double or triple if you consider that.

Yeah, I get that, it's more how many guns are in the hands of such a clear minority that I found far more surprising. Obviously breaking down the numbers of peoples beliefs would be a lot harder to work out, but I honestly thought far more owned guns, especially seeing as you are constantly being told there are over 300/350 million guns in the country.

Which means that despite having just 4.4% of the world's population, Americans own almost half of all the civilian-owned guns on the entire planet.

And here is the kind of shit the majority of people are fighting. What's more worrying is the numbers of people that not only listen or agree with this, but the number that actually plan and want to do something about it. To be fair, this really is an advert for owning a gun, if I saw shit like this on my TV I would want to own a gun for protection, just from them. FML.
