Graham Potter | turns down Ajax job

Nowhere near the mess we were at the start of the season, but it is ridiculous to talk of him being sacked before hes even got a trasnfer window under his belt.

Never mind graham, harry potter couldn't turn that club around in 3 months.
Ten Hag could. But thanks god, he did that with us !
Some managers are getting excuses after excuses, some are getting results.

For the first ~3 months of his time at United? Yeah, he got loads of excuses made for him and had the support of the press and a significant proportion of United fans too

He also didn't lose 7 of his opening 19 games. I imagine by the time he had lost 7 or so games, the media were on his back.

I rated Potter very high but his problem is that he's neither charismatic nor weird enough to succeed at the top level.

I was a huge fan of Potter at Brighton but don't forget he was managing in the Championship only 3 years ago.

This was a huge step up and could be too big of an ask.

I don't disagree with many of your points but I do disagree that a job is too big for him. I did think at the time that Chelsea was the wrong move for him because of the type of club they are but if afforded time he'd make it work. Ten Hag also has experience of winning titles and in the CL, he's a better manager than Potter and there is no shame in that. Ten Hag also had his own transfer window with control over who he wanted to bring in and hasn't had the injury pile up that Potter has had really despite having injuries himself. I don't think Potter has had it all his own way so far. I know results matter and it's sadly a business where they do and if they pile up too much then you're in danger of being sacked but I very much rate Potter and think it would be a mistake to let him go. If he's sacked I don't doubt that the next place he goes to will be much better off for it.

Anyway, I hope he does get sacked. I'd take him instantly.
It was always going to be a big step up for Potter but I agree with you that he's been dealt a really shit hand. Not just with injuries but their transfer policy seems to be just some loud American running around shouting "Yeehaw", shooting revolvers in the air as he buys everyone he sees on the back pages of The Sun.

When your transfers are being planned by someone with zero knowledge of football you get, well, United for ten years.

I will preface this by saying it's complete bullshit, but he is just too plain looking for Chelsea. You cannot look like that and gain the respect of the players. They need a suave looking guy like Ancelotti, Conte, Mourinho, etc.

Not the first time there's been a shooting at Chelsea

We lost 3 out of our first 6 league games. 5 in our first 15 league games. He was given the benefit of the doubt until at least February, as I recall.

I get it, people don't rate Potter, and that's fine, but we don't need to start pretending like it's a new phenomenon for a British manager to have excuses made for them when they have a bad start in a job.

He's not getting anything out of the players. They're not playing for him, and a lot of them were winning the Champions League a few years ago and are likely thinking what does Potter know. It's similar to Moyes at Man Utd. Chelsea will continue to lose games this season until he is sacked.

The thing about poor transfers isn't much of a defence - it's the reality of the situation that Potter knowingly signed up for. Boehly isn't going anywhere soon so he's going to have to find a way to make it work, or he won't and he'll be out of the door and rightly regarded as a failure.

agreed. just a simple “gadzooks” in his post match press conference would give him another 5 games.

Brighton still doing pretty well without him. Food for thought.

That’s more proof that he did a great job and left them in good shape for his successor.

You can question his capacities/potential at a bigger club, but there is no need to downplay the job he did previously.

That's very true with regards to Ten Hag getting pre-season with the team, and he got the right players in where we needed the desperately. But still, Ten Hag was willing to change his style to get that momentum going for the club and get points on the board.

I think that shows the experience that you note, having done it for longer and at a higher level. Potter seems to keep setting Chelsea up the same, and he'd more than likely eventually get things right because he's a talented coach, but it needs to happen now because Chelsea just can't afford to spend a season or two in mid-season.

If I was you, I'd love to see him at Everton too. Lampard is such an overrated coach and Lampard to Potter would be a massive upgrade.

It was better in attack, but an absolute horror show in defence. Usually, they can't create for shit. Zakaria and Felix were his best players while they were on the pitch which is not a great sign because he is getting absolute zero from the ones that were in the club before. Highly doubtful how much they play for him.

8 defeats in the last 11. How long does this go on for? 11 defeats in 13?

Could also be an indication that Brighton have an excellent footballing hierarchy, a top class transfer system, and continue to be great at identifying a manager to suit their philosophy. Pretty much the opposite of Chelsea.

I think Chelsea will be a good side once they get through this slump still, but with the money they've spent... I suppose with injuries it's not easy.

I want him to stay just so that every time Harry Potter is trending, people get to see his mug instead

How stupid does it make the new owner look though if he sacks tuchel, hires potter and sacks him so quickly without affording him real time.

Wait, what? We're on the same page obviously. My exact point is that he's getting the excuses made for him because he's British, and a-bit of a media darling.

Potter: Started well..went a goal down...kept going.. Second half started well...conceded the goal...reacted well.

well done dickhead.

Has any manager ever come into one of the top 4 or 5 PL clubs and lost 7 of their opening 19 games? Looks very unprecedented.
Moyes lost 5 of his first 22. And he took over the champions. Coincidentally another manager promoted above his station off doing ok at a small club.
