Graham Potter | turns down Ajax job

We had Gallagher coming back and also invested (relatively) big on Chukwuemeka. Also Broja for the "younger" forward.

Caicedo looks great but will cost us near 80 million.

Will be interesting on what Potter wants to do in January regarding transfers. The new owners don't seem stingy.
I meant a forward in their prime. Good to see Gallagher and Broja get chances but they haven't torn up trees so far.

Caicedo is the closest thing to a Kante regen on the market - I think there could well be a tussle between Chelsea, United, Liverpool for him, more likely in the summer though.

Good job he’s a United fan.

League winners over the last decade:

12/13 - Manchester United
13/14 - Manchester City
14/15 - Chelsea
15/16 - Leicester
16/17 - Chelsea
17/18 - Manchester City
18/19 - Manchester City
19/20 - Liverpool
20/21 - Manchester City
21/22 - Manchester City

Once Pep goes that'll open it up. I agree with the knight. I don't think we'll see anyone dominate like Pep has, or United did under Ferguson.
I think that's a shortsighted way of looking at it , going as far back as to when you started your domination of English football in the mid 70s the trend has always been for dominant club to show up after a miniscule stretch of time with no clear big dog or what u would like to call the wilderness years in fact that's the trend in all of Europe, I have no reason to believe it won't be the same this time around, maybe we'll have a few shock winners but the top dog will finally show itself.

For the points of this argument and looking at the Timeline I've set the the immigration aftermath of the post pep periods could look like the very late 80s and early 90s and post Ferguson pre pep.
I think City domination waning when Pep leaves is wishful thinking. The intensity he built at Barcelona took 7 years and gross mismanagement to wane off while Bayern have sweeped up since he left.

Mo doubt someone will quote me with "it's Bayern and the Bundi ofcourse they will dominate" but that's the thing, they've not dominated the way they have during and since Pep, ever, their record was 3 titles in a row and even that was only done twice.
You're giving him too much credit, the bayern machine was built up by haynckes and they actually seemed to be better off in Europe without him, and in the case of Barcelona they probably would gobbled up league titles anyway as they did before.

I just think that there's too much money spread out around several clubs for any one of them to dominate. United had Ferguson and City have Pep but I think those managers are rare. You might get someone win back-to-back titles but not three in a row/five out of six etc.

When Potter got appointed I immediately thought Caicedo and Trossard could potentially end up with us. Now i think it'll be only Trossard, because i think Rice to Chelsea next summer is one of the worst kept secrets out there, and there'd be no need for another DM aswell...

Also if we actually went up against them for Caicedo 1, you’d hope we finish above them and 2, he’s a United fan.

I think he'll do well, was a fan of the football they were playing at Brighton. The only reservation I'd have is whether or not he's too passive a personality to handle a higher profile job, that's yet to be seen.

Eh, the degree to which he does well depends on expectations. It's very hard to go from top 4 to real title challengers. Probably the hardest step in football. He's a good manager, but he might not be good enough to be more than a top 4 teak. And the problem is he's competing with Pep, Klopp, Ten Hag, Conte, Arteta. Obviously Pep and Klopp are in a league of their own, wo being a good or very good manager sometimes isn't good enough ultimately. It's not like they've been struggling the past few years, Tuchel is a very good manager and did well with them. I doubt Potter gives them a higher ceiling.

Should have put out a team full of kids. Ben Chilwell went off with a bad hamstring injury. Piss poor from Potter.

Chilwell hasn’t started the last 2 games. You have to keep in mind Potter has had no preseason so he’s likely learning about the team as he goes. This was a good opportunity to try different things and try and get under performing players into some confidence.

Couldn't disagree more. This is our tenth game in 31 days and its fecking stupid to be playing a near full strength team when this meaningless game is just before Arsenal, City and Newcastle in the next 10 days. It's not remotely defendable.

Chilwell has barely played recently. His injury had nothing to do with too many games.

Potter made 7 outfield changes for this game.
You being serious mate? Mount, Chalobah, Sterling, Havertz, Aubameyang, Jorginho, Mendy, Chilwell. And to top it off he brought Thiago Silva on! None of these guys should have been playing a meaningless game when you consider what we've had and what we have in the next ten days. It's a joke and we have shot ourselves in the foot just like we did with RLC a few years back.

Arsenal (h), City (a) CC and Newcastle (a) next three before the World Cup. Interesting period coming up.

Arsenal performance recently won't make me afraid about that match but city and Newcastle will get real ugly for us in my opinion.

The team that’s drawn the most in the league? That’s drawn as many as they have won? It’s got draw written all over it.

Does seem ridiculous. Maybe he’s simply just going all in because its his first time/season in Champions League?

He can get the best out of Maguire. I'm 99% sure.
If I was Chelsea I'd buy Maguire for any price.

I don't know about performances but Brighton aside the results under him have been impressive so far.

If you play like you did against Brighton that Arsenal attack is going to rip you apart.

Football never has or never will work like that.

If it did we wouldn't have won the UCL just over a month after Sam Allardyce rocked up to Stamford Bridge and hit us for 5.

I am not saying you are going to play as bad, but there have been several times this season where your defense has looked shaky. Arsenal are extremely dangerous right now and not the team you want to have a shaky defense agains.

It seems extremely unlikely that we'll use a back 3 with Pulisic and Sterling at wingback vs. Arsenal.

don't watch a lot of Chelsea but in recent weeks I have, they seem to take a while to get going in games. Even against us we dominated opening half hour v them until they made that switch. Slow start v Brighton, 1 goal down v Zagreb

Don't think Silva and Azpi can play in a back 4 easily as to old and lack pace. I think we have to play a back 5..., Cucu can play LWB, though he's not been great in recent games.... Who can we play at RWB?

Not sure how we're going to play, at least Koulibaly is back to play LCB. Injury ravaged squad, at least most should be back for the end of December even if they won't be happy to miss the WC.

I'd go back 4 with Chalobah at RB, Cucurella LB and KK/Silva the CBs. I think we can defend as a back 3 if needed, and push Cucurella right up into advances areas in possession. Starting Zakaria in this game might be a stretch too far but the profile of player he is will prove to be really, really useful this season, if Potter can get him into shape. I'm actually not particularly bothered about which attacking combinations we start with. I feel like they're all performing at a similar level, Ziyech aside.

RLC or Zakaria at RWB I'd say.

Yeah this is a reasonable idea as well.

He was destroyed by Brighton but will get something against Arsenal. That's the way it works.

Be an interesting game for them against arsenal, can see it being a draw to be honest. But if Chelsea perform like last game then arsenal will rip them apart.

Feels a bit like Moyes at Man. United, taking over in transition and frequently getting tactics wrong from start in crucial games.

Chelsea were really poor again first half today so it's a continuing trend over last month.

The skeleton that tuchel built is there but they seem noticeably worse at building out the back, counter pressing etc.

Color me surprised

They were better under Tuchel this season then they have under him in every game. Something clearly not working and I'm not sure he'll get time to put his stamp on the team

They are really really poor so far under him
