Graeme Sourness | Retires from “punditry”

Unconscious racism
Nothing unconscious about it sadly.

People have recently been rimming G Nev for all his media work but Keane is the only one who actually criticises everyone fairly - G Nev is too political and won’t speak out when things like the Pogba v Kane comparison come up without thinking it through and then probably addressing it in his next podcast or whatever. It has to be addressed immediately.

When Micah makes the point, pundits who shut him down should be challenged live on air, they’d be scrabbling over each other to apologise as soon as someone pulled them up on it.

Sort of off topic and that, but hair has been spoken about a bit — do you reckon Micah’s hairline is sprayed on? It’s way too sharp to be real

Also can't help but noticing it's the one black panellist talking about how a black player is treated differently to a white england player and being shut down by 3 white guys.

I don't think it's racism but it is unconscious bias - Pogba is black, french and originally from Gabon. I think these old commentators just find it very difficult to relate to him and so they keep making random assumptions about him. For Kane they see someone who feels much more like them, so they try to imagine what it must be like for him in a way they don't for Pogba.

It's really frustrating watching Sky go on about how fans being racist in football is a disgrace when I think a lot of the material that those (obviously disgraceful) fans base their racism from is Sky's quiet (and possibly unconscious) reinforcement of racist tropes. I doubt any of the decision makers at Sky give a shit about genuinely dealing with racism in football, just in using instances of racist fans to get them clicks.

Adam Mckola also pointed out to Neville and co about the media treatment of Kane compared to Pogba (as well as Sterling and Rooney) and was roundly dismissed in the "overlap" show (58:51) and called a hypocrite.

Souness, Neville and sky spots would try to convince you spurs are holding good boy Kane hostage while bad boy Pogba is destroying the United team while ignoring the fact that Pogba is well within his right to play his contract out(just like Messi just did), meanwhile Kane has only fulfilled half of his contract he signed 3 years ago.

No one can convince me there isn't xenophobia bias here. Replace Paul Pogba with Jordan Henderson or Declan Rice and nothing is being said about them.

The absolute fecking state of Souness there, absolute disgrace.

Knows he's been caught out, face like a sour puss and wants to move the chat on.

Know its not the main focus of this thread but Kane and his supporters can feck off with 'there's another story behind it'. He didn't turn up when he was supposed to and subsequently isn't ready to start the season.

Souness begging the presenter to talk about Liverpool. Oh how I want us to win the league this season, with Pogba having a Ronaldo 2007/2008 esque season

Gary Neville doesn’t cop as much stick as Souness because he’s slightly more articulate than him, but he’s just as bad with his anti-Pogba agenda.

His half-an-hour attack on Pogba after he missed a penalty (that he won) against Wolves a couple of years back was absolutely disgraceful and unwarranted. All because Pogba, our penalty taker, took a penalty and not Rashford. Rashford took one the very next game and missed too!

Neville talks way too much in general. To quote Klopp from the beginning of the pandemic when he said ‘the most remarkable thing about this time is I learned that Gary Neville has an opinion on absolutely everything’. Which is spot on. He wants to run the country and he wants football to be run entirely to his liking too. Incredibly annoying man.

That was Carragher shouting him down and generally being a complete bellend. Even as Neville tried to answer the question.

Respect to McKola though, he tends to come across a bit thick on full time devils, but he handled himself well and stuck by his point rather than get into a row about it.

He's argued with Neville before I believe but I forget what it was about.

Really glad Neville and co are being called out for their hypocrisy. Micah Richards was spot on, and souness really needs to disappear from the football scene, he's an embarrassment.

Let’s not fecking forget Harry Kane playing Golf with Gary Neville and doing a fecking full on one hour interview about how he wants to leave.

Imagine the fecking scenes if Pogba did that? Like, seriously. He’s walking around with a golf club telling Gary Neville that he wants out
I think Kane even set his own transfer fee in that interview too!

He's a bitter old man who should've been dropped by Sky a long time ago. If Grealish got 4 assists there's no way he'd refuse to praise him on the basis of it being expected because of his transfer fee.

I think turning your back to a colleague is not a good look on Souness.

Having said that, Micah Richard's defense of Pogba is not entirely accurate. Pogba has multiple times stated about his 'dream to play for Real Madrid' while under contract at United. It's not as blatant as Kane, but one can read between the lines.

Example: https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-of-playing-for-real-madrid-manchester-united

Also, I agree with Souness and Neville, agents represent/speak for players. If Pogba disagreed with his agent he should have told his agent to not talk about leaving with the media, but if I am not mistaken, his agent has repeatedly mentioned Pogba's desire to leave over the last few years, which suggests Pogba has not told his agent to stop talking about it after the first instance.

As long as he manages to wind people up with his shite opinions Sky are going to keep him employed. They're probably loving the engagement of that clip. They're only going to let him go when people stop caring for what he has to say.. the dozy racist fool.

It is mad that he's dismissing Kane not turning up for training out of hand and saying there's another story there.

The double standard is incredible. Souness and Neville can say Kane's been a model professional all they like, the fuss he's kicked up this summer is just as bad, if not worse than anything Pogba has done at United.

That's bizarre. Carragher jumps in and says " you're not defending Pogba, are you?". Mckola says no and then Carragher goes off in a rant about hypocrisy amongst fans. Mckola even says two or three more times that he's not defending Pogba.

And then Neville trying to make out Spurs last game of the season wasn't important because he talked himself into a corner.

Harry Kane is part of the old boys club. He probably wears Ralph Lauren polos & plays golf - in short, he's the most uninteresting, blandest man on the planet. Pogba is outgoing, colourful, wears outlandish clothes, and dyes his hair. His personality is loud and flamboyant. Everything that boring old cnuts like Souness hate. It's quite funny seeing his own bigoted views being so clearly and unbiasedly proven to be BS and him having to confront that on live TV.

Liverpool supporter popping in to say I now hope Pogba scores 40 and assists 30 this season. Souness, Carragher and Neville are absolute asshats, they represent Ingerlunddddd in the way that nobody of good taste wants to see.

On a more depressing note, think a poster above was spot on; Sky will be loving this, not bummed by this.

good thread discussion. Take care

WTF, is it prohibited to defend Pogba now? For some reason these "pundits" turn into weirdos when it comes to Pogba.

I think this is right. Pogba has brand deals and social media presence the old timers don't like or understand and they use any opportunity they can to take shots at him for it.

I'll admit the Pogmoji stuff all around the pitch when we lost to Liverpool a few years back was a bit of a faux pas - and Pogba rightfully took a bit of flak for that - but most of the attention on him now is generated by the likes of Souness, Keane and Neville.

Somebody else mentioned it earlier in the thread but that rant Gary Neville went on a couple of years ago when Pogba missed that penalty was genuinely bizarre and completely out of proportion. Playground behaviour. If a player missing a penalty can evoke that kind of response, that tells you everything you need to know.

Look how they shut Micah down cause they don't like they're hypocrisy being pointed out.

Sounness stamping his feet, turning his back and begging to change subject cause he has no retort to the situation.

It's irrational hate or its the R word that I know people don't like being pointed out on here!

Neville feeds into the situation too. How they can't spot the difference in treatment is insane! Kane not turning up for training is literally miles worse than anything Pogba has ever done!

Micah's face when he says "well we're here to he neutral" says it all.

And of course race comes into it. The problem is that people can't distinguish between 'race is an element in this discussion' and 'Gary Neville is a racist and so are you!'. It's not the same thing. No-one is being accused of being a 'racist' in the old-fashioned sense. But the reason Harry Kane's reputation is surviving something Pogba's never would in this country is that Kane is a 'nice respectful English boy' and Pogba is a 'flash, cocky urban French kid who is too keen on being friends with rappers'. And if you can't hear how racially codified that is, you're deaf.

This is absolutely spot on, good post.

I thought it was disgusting the way they almost gagged Micah for pointing out the hypocrisy.

4 white men shut down 1 black man who is trying to point out the unfair treatment of a black player, it's disgusting.

Also, when they say they'll discuss Utd during our next match...what's the odds that Micah won't be involved in that games punditry

Yes, it takes a lot of work to ignore the visuals of two white media men dismissing and shutting down a Black man when he's trying to discuss the contrast between media treatment of a specific white man and a specific Black man. I don't love this word, but are they completely oblivious to the optics? I find it hard to believe that they don't, on some level, know what they're doing.
This.

Fair play to Richard’s for having the balls to stand up to souness and his mate Neville for calling out Kane and pointing out the hypocrisy of his agenda with pogba.

Richards is quickly becoming one of my favourite pundits. I never liked him as a footballer, but even Roy Keane seems to love the guy - that says it all.
