Good lord. Not having it and sure, recency bias, but this is legit top choke in history to me. Greg did over the course of a whole round, as did Rory's previous, Velde was a practical no one.... Rory is a seasoned player chasing a long deserved 5th major and it was essentially 2 basic putts (for him).

Genuinely hope he rebounds straight away at the Open, but there's not gonna be many windows that Scottie has an off weekend too. Imagine having 20 top 10's and zero conversions to wins with that talent, it's insane.

His private life has been in turmoil he's done great this week and he will be contending for years yet.

I think Normans was off the scale.… four bogeys and five double-bogeys in one round (that’s 50% of the holes!) and an 11-shot swing in 18 holes.

Maybe I've been become too accustomed to Augusta meltdowns.... man I forgot Rory's was actually an 80, and Spieth's colossal one too, as defending champion to boot. But yeah, I think I'll eventually slot old Greg back into the top choke by the morning. This one hurts though, and I actually like the mad scientist.

It wasn’t quite that bad. It was 5 bogeys and 2 doubles - still 9 shots dropped but not 14! Still managed birdies at 3 par 5s as well. +6 for the round compared to Faldo’s -5.

The difference with Rory’s was that the choke came off the back of incredible golf in the very same round. He birdied 4 of the 6 holes before the awful last 4. It was a very clear example of a switch in his head once he got into position to win.

As much as I dislike Bryson, I greatly respect the honor he’s giving to Payne Stewart in that interview.

Stewart was my favorite golfer as a kid. Tiger filled the hole that the airplane tragedy left for me & my golf fandom.

We Americans can be so dumb sometimes. I cringed hard when some idiots started chanting USA when Rory missed that 2nd short put. I'll take any foreign guy still playing in the PGA tour over an American taking that dirty oil money from Saudi Arabia.

Still can't believe he messed that up
After the last decade of watching Rory at majors, I never expected anything else, sadly.

Anyway, I guess he has to pick himself up again and try to win The Open. That seems like the only way to avoid this collapse becoming serious scar tissue in the coming 10 months until the next round of majors.

I was in a weird limbo between fully expecting him to choke but then being completely surprised that it really did so predictably happen

I've never been a big fan of Bryson: LIV, his overall demeanor and his antics in some of the Ryder Cups etc. However, this is absolute top quality, might be he's growing on me.
Same, something about his (let's be honest, ugly as sin) swing and the LIV thing turned me off, but he's done loads of random YouTube videos lately and actually comes across really well. Gutted for Rory, but happy enough with the Bryson win.

It all started hitting over the green on 15 with the same club Cantley hit. If Cantley was first up there no way Rory goes with the same 7 iron. Poor decision making. Then again on 18 driving when he hit 3 wood all week. Why change it up? You've done your homework and clearly decided 3 wood to then doubt that and go driver shows he shite himself under the pressure

Agreed the moment you start second guessing yourself it's over in any sports but it's compounded in individual sports like golf you can't hide

It's all completely fake, he's like Tom Cruise or something with a load of media training. Paying someone a fortune to PR his way into people's favour.

You couldn't be more wrong. People can see through it when someones being fake, Bryson was always popular he's just found a way to connect with fans on a level few golfers ever have. much rather see him win than a robot like Scheffler.

Please, I watched him tell multiple lies in the most media-trained way while on the desk with Smiley over the weekend. Saying he wore the hat because of Payne Stewart when he said for years it was because of Hogan, and claiming he arrived at SMU and saw the mural of Payne at their training facility and knew he had to go there, when the mural wasn't even there at that point in time

He has definitely found a way to connect with people alright, just not in the way you mean. Know to be an absolute cnut behind the scenes by people close to golf.

He was celebrating his win with fecking Eric Trump like.

Exactly, he's a totally normal guy with totally normal friends.

Also a consequence of having a yes man on his bag, after sacking the guy who told him as it was on the way to 4 majors to replace him with a mate.

Rory didn’t choke. Yes the puts were within 6ft. However, both were extremely tricky because they were both downhill on a slope, ones that were being missed all day by most on both holes. Even DeChambaeu missed a similar one to drop a shot in the closing holes. So although it will hurt & haunt McIlroy, he didn’t choke on both puts!!!

DeChambaeu, although a great and extremely dedicated & driven golfer, is a fake selfish twat of a man. Scheffler is a genuine decent & lovely bloke, one of the nicest guys on tour.

This.

Both Rory's missed putts were very tricky.Far from 'gimmes'. He got a bad break on the 15th which cost him shot.
What I couldn't understand was hitting driver on 18? Bad call. That was the killer.

Spot on. It left him with a difficult chip, which he actually executed pretty well, but just a tad to far up the slope, and that left him with a very very tricky put which the field had mostly been missing. So I’d definitely argue he didn’t choke on either of the puts he missed because both were very very tricky, it was more what happened before he reached the greens on both puts he missed.
