Golf 2023

Was there Tuesday and Thursday, place is genuinely unbelievable. My expectations were very high and easily surpassed them. It’s golf perfection and the elevation changes are so vast that tv really doesn’t do it justice. I walked entire course 3/4 times Tuesday and then spent majority of Thursday sitting next to the water at 16. Was a great spot with how generous the pin was. Will definitely go back, hopefully get lucky in the ballot eventually.
I meant to post to ask you how you liked it. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It's impossible to get across to the lay person just how uphill 18 is!

Worked the 97 Masters & was able to play on the Monday following in an absolute stroke of luck. Second time was due to my doing a huge wine tasting for a bunch of muckity mucks in Aiken & they told me to bring my clubs. We played Aiken CC the day of the tasting & they kept being evasive about where we were playing the following day. They took a back road into Augusta to try to surprise me, but I cottoned onto them kinda early. It was amazing to drive down Magnolia Lane the second time though.
I was too young to understand, but what was the vibe after 97? Did anybody think that the world of golf had just changed forever?

Absolutely no doubt. It was earthshaking.

For Tiger to beat the field so handily after starting off with a 40 on his first nine holes was one thing, but breaking down the racial barrier at ANGC was seismic. I ran the floor of the huge golf shop behind #5 & a good number of ANGC's Black caddies worked in the back room pulling out back stock for us. When Tiger played through 16, it felt like the entirety of the patrons were being pulled along by him, leaving us almost fully out of product & totally dead. The assistant pros who were supervisors told everyone that they could walk along with the crowd following Tiger, but to get back after he hit his drive on 18. Well, most of the fans stayed put on 18 & most of the employees did too. So, it was basically me, the two assistant pros, & all the Black caddies in the back room watching Tiger putt out. There was not a dry eye in the house, those caddies never imagined seeing such a revelation & were absolutely over the moon, but many were also crying over the unspoken racism that still existed at ANGC at the time. The two assistant pros & I were crying along with them. After we had a good sob, it was utterly amazing to watch how much immediate pride the caddies carried themselves with. It is a golfing memory I will never forget & still get goosebumps when I recollect it. I was so honored to have experienced what I did in that stockroom for those 30 minutes or so. Best memory of the three weeks there.

The next day, one of the caddies named 'Tip' was on my bag for the tournament. I told him to tell me stories about ANGC & the Masters & he never shut up the whole round. It was exactly what I wanted to hear, it reminded me of losing my ticket at halftime to the only match I have attended at OT but somehow was able to hang out with Wilf McGuinness the second half (& the plane flight home the next day!) & listening to all the stories he told. Absolutely priceless memories that I wish I could have taped somehow to watch the rest of my life.

Sorry for the long post!

So Young lost his golf ball, the CBS cameras find it but no- one tells him. He hits a provisional shot finds his old ball and now can play it as his second shot. I’ve been playing for years and no one told me I could still hit my second shot if that happens. I have terrible golf friends.

What did you think provisional meant?

Make sure you announce you're playing a provisional before you play the second shot from the same location. If you then find the first ball, that's the one in play.

Shitty golf friends you have, or just ignorant.

Rahm v koepka round 3 is so good. Rahm has a bit of an advantage knowing how the course is reacting. Absolutely no way he plays short on 16 again.

This kid Bennett - staying in the Crow's Nest & is in the final group.

Imagine hitting that prop bet if it was even listed.

Playing for the trophy while already having one in his back pocket, what a feeling that must be.

His post game interview yesterday was so good. Impossible to root for anyone else today.

I'm very much a casual viewer, and only really watch the final day of a major, my dad is a golfer and ardent watcher!

-why the stigma over Koepka? Apparently he's joined a Saudi league? It sounds a bit like the super League in football, but as it's an individual sport and presuming it's not giving him any advantage, why shouldn't he be competing in this?

-i really want the amateur guy to win, but apparently he can't take any prize money due to being an amateur? You'd be gutted! Can he even get the green jacket or trophy?

-im surprised after Tigers accident he hasn't been given special permission to use a buggy?

Sounds like the weather could be wild which will make it more interesting for the casual viewer, but hopefully it doesn't hinder Bennett, who presumably has less experience than the pros?

It sounds a bit like the super League in football, but as it's an individual sport and presuming it's not giving him any advantage, why shouldn't he be competing in this?- it’s just because he took the easy money, despite being good enough still to win against a more competitive field.

-i really want the amateur guy to win, but apparently he can't take any prize money due to being an amateur? You'd be gutted! Can he even get the green jacket or trophy? If he wins, the missed prize money isn’t going to mean a thing to him for how much it changes his life. Although I can’t see how they won’t pay out. He’ll get a green jacket presented to him, you can bet on that.

-im surprised after Tigers accident he hasn't been given special permission to use a buggy? He hasn’t even asked. He wants to walk.

Sounds like the weather could be wild which will make it more interesting for the casual viewer, but hopefully it doesn't hinder Bennett, who presumably has less experience than the pros? The weather will hinder them all off the tee, so long iron play is going to win the tournament. Morikawa could shoot the lights out.

What did you think provisional meant?
I just never used the word. If you shoot a ball and found a lost one we just used the ball we shot instead. So ive been losing strokes. I guess you have been saying provisional. Good for you. Its a life changer for me.

Ah right, I wondered if you had thought provisional and 3 off the tee were the same. Yeah, crappy playing partners in terms of rule knowledge!

Where do you play?

It sounds a bit like the super League in football, but as it's an individual sport and presuming it's not giving him any advantage, why shouldn't he be competing in this? LIV is a glorified hit & giggle for obscene sums of money. In order to get into a major, a player has to do well on an official tour which gives them points. LIV doesn't award world golf points to their players, but Koepka can play off of past victories. A bit confusing, but no one from the sham tour should be able to accrue points towards qualifying for majors

-i really want the amateur guy to win, but apparently he can't take any prize money due to being an amateur? You'd be gutted! Can he even get the green jacket or trophy? He will receive the trophy with his name etched on it, he will receive a green jacket (that doesn't leave the premises; they wear alternate jackets off site. He will not (I don't think) receive any purse nor will it be held in escrow for him. The winning amount just goes back into the pool of money for the professionals. It sounds a bit draconian but look at it another way - he's going to turn pro in a few months & will have apparel & equipment sponsorships waiting for him that would be more than what Tiger got when he turned pro. It would reset the market. He already has some sponsorships now (which I didn't think was allowed). He actually declined to turn pro a few months ago as he wanted to compete in his first Masters as an amateur (Augusta National has quite the backstory & history of amateurism & the Masters).

-im surprised after Tigers accident he hasn't been given special permission to use a buggy? Not going to happen nor should it be allowed anymore imo. There was the Casey Martin saga 20 or so years ago (it's worth googling) that actually got into the court system over if he could use a cart & it was a lightning rod issue. The advantage gained by using a cart is simply too great. There is currently a carve out for individual exemptions on a case by case basis, but no tour professional would ever want to utilize such an advantage, no matter how much it would be helpful.

Sounds like the weather could be wild which will make it more interesting for the casual viewer, but hopefully it doesn't hinder Bennett, who presumably has less experience than the pros? He comes from Texas near Houston so playing in wind will be second nature to him. However, the pros have played in conditions like these far more often than Bennett & will have a mental advantage to him. That said, I hope he can stay in contention today as he's already shown that he can handle the course well in 'normal' conditions.

Thanks for the answers! Probably stupid questions, but I'm very much a casual viewer only really dipping into it for a major - it's especially exciting when they have a play off

You’re watching the best major by far with quite the unique situation unfolding. Your questions were rather insightful.

Thank you! The coverage is a bit iffy - they're out golfing now but not showing snippets of all of them like they are later - you can only watch set holes/areas

Rahm just thinned the feck out of it on 4. Be doing good to make bogey.

Just dozed off for a bit. It is absolutely fecking miserable out there.

At least the weather moves quickly through the area in the Open Championship. This is just one big blob of shit weather.

@Carolina Red @WI_Red It must be even crappier up where y’all are.

Watching on sky Golf. Don’t have red button. I am wondering why I am watching so little golf and just a lot of Faldo talking
