Golf 2017

Apparently he has come out and stated that alcohol was not involved, and that it was a mix up of or unexpected consequence of medication. Hopefully that is true, and would make it more understandable as he likely is one a heavy mixture of meds after his recent back surgery.

For all his faults I like the guy. Legend of the game, and of the reasons why we have such a great set of youngsters battling it out now.

Wasn't he caught at 3am in the morning? Wonder where he had been, supermarket? hookers? brothel? Plus he looks pretty wrecked on his arrest picture.

So can you get a DUI for not driving and just sleeping/sitting in the car?
Tbf - he basically passed out in his car. And while he wasn't drunk...he wasn't all there either.

According to the report, the officer said Woods "had extremely slow and slurred speech" and struggled with several roadside tasks.

So unable to walk in a straight line or complete basic tasks dealing with coordination.

Could he not have been driving and felt fine, felt dizzy/tired to pulled over and had a nap? Obviously the dizzyness/tiredness due to the meds he was taking? I mean who adheres to those messages anyway? Half the population wouldn't be able to goto work if they were strictly adhered to.

Golf has gone weird, that's 7 Majors in a row won by players claiming their first.
They've been talking about it on Talksport this morning and how different it is to tennis - in that sport for the last decade really it's just been Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray with the odd winner coming from elsewhere.
Golf is so difficult to call nowadays, it's hard to see Mcilroy for example even getting in to double figures never mind catching the true legends of the game.

It’s fair to say Maurice Flitcroft never quite understood the idiosyncratic world of golf. Teeing it up the next day, he got down on all fours at the first to carefully balance his ball on its peg, then skied his opening drive a mere 40 yards down the hole. He later described the shot as a “real high-flying disappointment”. It was the first of 121 mishaps; his card would include an eight, a nine, an 11 and a 12 with a question mark beside it.

A great piece about the 1976 Open:

The forgotten story of … Seve, a hacker and Johnny Miller's 1976 Open
A Royal Birkdale scorcher saw a teenage Spaniard make a run for glory, a qualifier endure 121 mishaps and the stories amass on the Lancashire Riviera ~

More on Maurice:

Maurice Flitcroft became headline news that day, carding a round of 121, the worst in Open history. His story didn't end there. For the next 14 years, he would engage in a farcical game of cat-and-mouse with Keith Mackenzie, secretary of the R&A, golf's governing body, and a man whose constitution appears to have been 10% flesh, 10% blood and 80% rulebook. The humourless Mackenzie felt humiliated by Flitcroft's antics in 1976 and banned him sine die - so Maurice simply entered again and again, employing ludicrous pseudonyms such as Gerald Hoppy, James Beau Jolly, Count Manfred von Hofmannstal and Gene Paychecki. Usually the denouement would feature Flitcroft being chased from the course

Who we all fancying for the Open then peeps?

I fancy Rose to have a really good crack at this championship, but have picked 7 guys on Bet365. The field is so open I was struggling to pick

Can't wait to finish work and get home to watch it. Apart from the Ryder Cup, there is no better golf tournament than the Open imo, love it.

If Stenson wins back-to-back he reckons he's going skydiving with the Jug . I'm backing him just for that.

Had £200 on him at 13.5, lovely stuff
Missed this. Great bet that one!

I've gone for Matt Kuchar, just fancy his chances this year. Maysuyama side bet as well as I think he will place top 5, possibly challenge for it.

Kuch is playing well at the minute too, good bet that one. Aye I think Matsuyama could challenge too. I've went for Rose, Fowler, Oosthuizen, Mickleson and Cabrera-Bello. I always bet Kaymer too, I love watching him play and think he has a great rythym. Love Rory and took him too. He's in wretched form but at 20-1 I couldn't not take him.

I've gone for Spieth (17), Rose (23), and Fleetwood (28) as my punts this week.

Anyone left in the field? Rose is always a good bet, he's been practicing there all month and is a good age to win it.

Kuchar at 55/1 was just too tempting!

Not sure there is tbh mate  as I said the field is so open I couldn't just pick a few! I'll be gutted if none of them get the job done

Aye always think Rose has a chance and he's started well too by the looks of it. I didn't see those odds on Kuchar! If I had he would have been added to my pool of players too :D

I got Poultz, Fleetwood, Bryson and eh forgot who my fourth was....not that I truly fancy them, just at the top, it's wild at the moment. So it's a case of just having some fun with golf betting at the moment.

Went to practice yesterday, different world to us mortals. Remarkably easy....don't think I witnessed a single stray ball, well more than a few inches into the rough all day. It's clearly a different story when it goes into a championship day and it's all about the mentality. Will have to go again on a championship day....were thinking of doing a trip to France next year.

Good selection there like. Tbh the weather looks wild and heard it was brutal early on this morning, with more forecasted for the weekend. Be interesting who copes with the weather the best.

Absolutely, golf is on another level when it comes to mental strength. I played in Maybole in Ayr a few weeks ago in the pouring wind and rain and played relatively well, but in championship rounds it must be the hardest battle, fighting the elements and then staying mentally strong too. Have so much respect for golfers, can be the easiest game in the world then in a flash it's the hardest. France would be great, anywhere particular in mind?

Go down to watch the Ryder Cup I think, not sure if we'll play as everywhere will be packed. Wouldn't mind a weekend up Scotland though, but we need to tune up our game a bit, so will just continue with a couple day trips around North Wales/West this year mainly - though I think the likes of Birkdale or even it's neighbour Hillside are a bit out of the price range.

Els was my fourth bet, so 2 up and around there and 2 at +6.....might break even if either of Poulter and Els come through on either way, not sure.

Good seeing Spieth finding his groove though, his game management at such a young age is incredible, because I'm not sure I'd consider him the most natural player on course, he just manages everything so well, which is why is he's so good at Augusta, and already picked up the US Open. Steady steady player, enjoyed watching him since he got on tour.

A better day for Rory. Could have been even better as well after his front 9.

The weather's closing in and the wind is getting up. Could be brutal this late afternoon / early evening.

Wouldn't be an Open Championship without buckets of rain and 30+ mph winds.

Really looking forward to seeing what Spieth can do with better conditions tomorrow

Can cashout on Spieth at £2050 now or let it ride for £5400 for the win.

I'm only worried about Koepka really, and Spieth is looking great, but I'm tempted

Talk about the impact of conditions. Real birdie-fest today. Will be interesting to see if the good conditions hold- it's absolutely pissing it down here in London. I'm hoping the crap weather pisses off up north.

Quick question- Fowler's chip onto the green hit the other guy's ball- actually worked out ok for both as it slowed his ball and knocked the other one nearer the hole.
The commentators said little- what are the rules around that?

Woah. Branden Grace with a round of 62, new Open record.

I read about it a while ago, I think they just play them from where they finish.

If it hits when both balls started on the green it's a different matter though iirc.

Edit: I'm wrong. In your scenario Fowler plays his ball from where it ends up, other guy puts his back to where it originally was.

Koepkas putter is on fire today :s Still think Spieth will hold on though.

Cheers. Do they kinda guess where the other guy's ball was? It only moved a few inches tbf. I'd just never seen it happen before.

I'd guess with most tournaments they have stewards looking exactly where the ball is on the green, it will still have to be a bit of guesswork but they'll get it pretty close.

It's actually happened to me and my brother about 3 times since the start of this year, twice from tee offs on par 3's

Bloody hell. Golf croquet.

Rory aint winning it this year. Speith in cruise control.

Like the Masters earlier in the year, he dug in better than usual over the first 2 days and left himself in a decent position but didn't make the move needed on the Saturday. It's all set up for his obligatory 65 on a Sunday to put him in the top 10 of a tournament that he never really challenged to win.
