So we should forget rules exist for romanticism? Let things slide as it suits a good narrative? Rules need to be accurately applied or stuff them off entirely. A player is offside or he isn't, a goal stands or it doesn't, there is no technicalities it's binary as it gets.

Yes screw romance. Who needs that?

Spectacle of a game? Nah.

Enjoying the moment? Nope.

We must enforce all the rules so every throw in, corner, 50/50 Decision should be looked at by a large cross panel of refs to make absolutely sure the correct decision has been made.

In fact they can rewatch the whole game & give us the actual result a day or so later. Rules are rules.

It is entertainment after all, why make the rules any bigger a part of it than they have to be?

You are over the speed limit or you are not. If you are (no matter if your speedometer said otherwise), shut up and pay your ticket.

Historic goals and soundbites will be scrubbed due to technicalities. Insignificant technicalities, there's something we can all get behind right?
Really? Looks to me like you're still talking about those disallowed goals. Would you be talking about that game if VAR didn't exist? Hmmm. This is awkward.

Have you answered my question? Why does the most popular sport in the world by far need to change? At all?
Why don’t other sports follow us?

Football is not & will never be a place for VAR. If we persist with it I’m sure other sports will overtake one day. We are ruining the best game in the world for what? It’s insane

Because they're going forward in time, not backwards. It would be weird for them to start pretending they're heading back to the 20th century.

People generally like technology. They generally want it in sport. They don't want things to freeze as they were in the 1990's. That's why most fans are in favour of VAR. That's why PL clubs voted to bring VAR in. You're speaking as if the people who want VAR are in the minority, when the reverse is true. Most fans don't want what you want. You might not like it but that's reality.

Nothing in football made me angrier than a penalty given because of a clear dive in the box or an awarded goal that was clearly offside. These instances are slowly becoming nonexistent and I couldn't be happier. I couldn't care less about having to wait 30 sec for the right call to be made.
Excellent point. In the longrun i think it will make for a better game.

You want me to answer your question, that you hadn't even asked me, after you refused to answer mine? Looks to me like you're just trying to avoid answering at this point. Wonder why that is?

Because the sport has changed, whether you like it or not. As fans we do not consume football in the same way as we did 40 years ago, and, again, those changes have been facilitated by us, the fans. Horse has bolted, pal.

Seriously? Have you been living under a rock? Sorry to disappoint you but football is WAY behind the curve when it comes to technology. In fact, every major sport has incorporated technology way before football.

What on earth are you talking about ? Pal.

Don’t ‘consume’ football the same way. What does that even mean. I don’t think even you do you just think it’s a good soundbite to look like your the progressive voice on this subject.

Can’t you see that other games are vastly different to football in their make up? Technology can easily work in a stop start game like tennis or cricket.

Not in football.

And if your vote was in the minority, by gosh you should just shut up and accept it...

Technology is great. Just not in football.

Those Pro VAR just can’t seem to understand that

I never said he had to shut up at all, or accept it (whatever that means). He's free to keep complaining about VAR for the rest of his life for all I care, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But in this case he was asking why the sport has to change. The answer is that most people want it to change.

Yep those pro VAR sound very much like the mad brexiteer lot to be honest

Well just like brexit they’ll realise it’s a terrible mistake & we can go back to normality.

This is the biggest plus I can think of, too. I was thinking that something had changed for the better too. More playing & less messing around already? Early days, obviously.

It's simple, why have rules if you are not going to ensure they are properly enforced? Maybe we should let players dive too since it adds to the drama and narrative? Or make it like Aussie rules where missing a shot on goal gets you a score too, high scoring spectacle to entertain us all no doubt. Let offsides go as we please cause feck it, it's in the moment.

And yeah, if you're a dumb cnut who speeds you deserve a ticket.

Let's hope they change the offside rule for next season then, so that the debate is not focused around millimeters like it is now. Millimeters that have provided no advantage/disadvantage to either team.

You think people will become less inclined to have ever improving technology in the sport as time goes on and millenials/Gen Y become the dominant demographic?

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Quoting myself now...but then of course we'll be allowing goals to stand in which we all feel an advantage was gained. But the alternative is disallowing goals where no advantage was gained...

Almost like we're better off just making a call on the field and living with it, since you know, none of this is life or death.

Yes I do because the game itself will suffer massively. It’ll be less fun, less interesting, less dramatic, less passionate.

Or they’ll go to a different sport

They have esports. Leave them to it. We'd be wise to leave a few odd things up to humans without too much of a technological crutch. Another discussion I know.

Edit: I say "they" when I'm one of them. But honestly. Let them have their esports if they require robotic perfection.

 This is getting ridiculous. So you don't know what 'consume' means? You've never heard of the word 'consumer' before? Try Google and come back to me when you want to actually discuss this, as opposed to sidestepping anything that doesn't fit your narrative.

Hang about. You literally ask me what sports have followed us in making this decision. And now I've pointed out to you all other major sports have already brought technology successfully in their sport, they don't count because the sports are different. It was your point!

Still haven't answered my question BTW.

Fair play > nostalgia

The application of VAR will be improved and adjusted over time, but a shaky first roll out is no reason to bin it.

P.S. - Sports purists are an annoying bunch.

There is something about feeling hard done by "luck" that has always been a part of the fabric of sports. If you deny that, don't bother quoting this. It is an invisible shield against the black and white realization that your team is either good enough or they aren't. Which is quite a boring way to view of sports.

VAR, it cannot be argued, will diminish and eventually aim to eliminate that, by its very nature. That is the objective.

Which is of course why you're not currently discussing this on the internet (literally with yourself at times) and instead you're down the Rubber Duck chatting with the landlord about this over a nice pint of Mild.

Almost like you forgot the pro brexit lot won the polls and not the other way around.

No they didn't. They lost pretty much every poll.

What an utterly idiotic mental leap to make.

Oh, did you forget you reply to me earlier? Fair enough.

Bet you can't prove it otherwise though. I'll donate 50 euro (thats about £100 now) to charity and post it here if you can prove there is no correlation whatsoever :).

I’m very anti VAR & very Pro EU.

Yes because we have the internet & mobile phones that MUST mean we should have VAR in football.

Idiotic.

It might improve with technology but it will get more and more prevalent. In 5 years you will be a “sports purist” clamouring for the good old days of pre-var matches. I say this because I have seen sports ruined in the States. Starting with instant replay and superimposed lines on the tv with graphics out of control. It’s coming. There will be offside lines moving back and forth on your screen. There will be other graphics too just to keep the viewers informed and up to date on the latest var angle ect..You will accept it as improving the game. 5-10 years from now you will be a disgruntled feck like me.

There is nowt wrong with VAR just they way they are implementing it. What they should do is have a bloke in a Van watching the match at the stadium as they do in both codes of Rugby. He can then whisper in the ear of the Ref that Sterling dived or Aquero handled etc. They don’t have to prat about for as long as they do. They should also have sin bins for stuff like pulling a player back or diving. Ten minutes with ten men will soon stop the cheating. The FA and PL are so arrogant they won’t ask for help from those that have had it for years.

Referees are by nature fussy, pedantic individuals, it's a necessity of their line of work.

The problem now is you're now giving them brand new technology that enables them to get absolutely every decision right, providing a feast for their abnormally high levels of fuss and pedanticism.

Telling them about only meddling in "clear and obvious" situations is nice but subjective to the point of being irrelevant given the aforementioned human nature of referees.

Sorry for those who hate it but VAR is here to stay, but the good news is that you'll get over it.

 imagine not celebrating goals anymore because they might get ruled out a few seconds later than they did before there was VAR. It's honestly the stupidest argument I've ever heard.
Well, someone said that he doesn't like VAR 'cause now all the referees are as good as each other, and how do you know who is the best referee anymore.'

Beat that argument!

The rest might as well just shut up and accept it then. It’s not like the masses have ever been wrong before.

Again, I didn't say anyone had to shut up or stop complaining at all. Ye're all free to dislike and complain about VAR, ye're all free to stop celebrating goals, ye're all free to stop watching football. That's entirely your own perogative.

That poster specifically asked why the sport has to change though and the answer is that the sport has to change because (most) fans and clubs want it to change. They can't be "wrong" when it comes to a preference and that preference is currently the dominant one.

This is what I’ve been saying. Early hours of VAR and the pitchforks are out. In the Utd game, it worked fine imho, could be a tad quicker but in time.

Actually if it affects attendance/TV ratings enough it isn’t here to stay. And what it is right now certainly isn’t here to stay, as we all know it will change frequently.

It won't affect attendance and TV ratings

That's true, the system will be changed and improved but VAR as a concept will remain of course
NFL TV ratings, while still the most prominent in America of course, are down from a decade ago. By ~2M viewers. I'm not attributing this all to instant replay. Just saying.

NFL attendance is also down from a decade ago.

What are you on about? Sports aren't ruined in the states because of instant replay. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. The NBA has probably some of worst examples of the overuse of instant replay and it's viewership has still increased over the last 5 years. The NFL has had replay since the mid 80s and is still the most popular sport in the US (in fact, they added MORE reviewable events after the Saints vs Rams debacle in the playoffs). Literally every major American sport has replay an there are no talks to remove it.

And no, I will never be a sports purists. They are insufferable, short-sighted, and almost always wrong.
