VAR - Love or Hate?

Seems all the small thinkers on here have mistakingly thought all along that the results of these matches matter more than the entertainment they provide.

If Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern, AC Milan, United, etc. hadn’t won all those titles some other teams would have and would be making just as much revenue with just as many supporters, etc.

Micro analyzing to ensure proper results will likely just mean the same teams remain at the top, as the predicted results will happen more often. Easier to gamble I suppose.

The rules and technology should be aimed at two more important things in my opinion: not letting the oil clubs buy trophies and eliminating racism from the stands.

This! Financial doping is a far bigger problem than an occasional offside goal.

I would say the unpredictable nature of a football match is what makes it interesting.

Football is still unpredictable even with VAR.

I mean Sterling's last minute goal being ruled out for offside in the CL was as stunning and high drama a moment as any in the tournament last year. The difference is it was also the correct call.

Horrible polling options for something that is not black and white. Also, if we are to talk about VAR the most important discussion isn't about the technology itself, but about its implementation.

They gained no advantage due to the minimal offside positioning of Aguero whose momentum was taking him away from goal as the ball was deflected off a defender.

But what a teachers pet you are following the rules perfectly. Bravo.

See now this I agree with. Criticising VAR as an overall development seems stupid to me but there are plenty of things about any given version of VAR that can easily be criticised. I'm still amazed at how bad they are at explaining decisions made, for example.

Sure! A game can be exciting, even with VAR. Our game vs PSG is another example. Time will tell if VAR is good for football or not. But I still believe it takes away a lot of the emotions and slows the game down.

In other words it was offside and correctly called as such so the goal was rightly disallowed. Agree entirely.

And without VAR not even fecking Spurs fans would’ve been up in arms if the goal stood. It was that fecking minimal.

Yep. How wonderful it must have been for Spurs fans to be rightly through to the semi-final after even they were nearly hoodwinked by a goal that shouldn't have been given.

Luckily VAR was there to make sure the right call was made and the right team was knocked out, while actively adding to the spectacle of the game. Everyone wins, except the people who shouldn't have won.

You deserve what it will become: robotic and predictable.

I distinctly recall a whole lot threads dedicated to moaning about incompetent referees last season. Now refereeing errors aren't as much of a factor and we have another thread dedicated to moaning about that. Football fans are world champions at being miserable bastards.

57% like it? Wow that’s insane for something which is changing the very nature of the game where it causes as many problems as it solves.

 seriously, it's crazy.
They want to believe refs were only getting like 70% of their calls correct.

There is a use for VAR in the game even, but that’s a dialed back one where we still allow our professionally trained officials to do their jobs on the pitch and keep the game moving along.

I hope enough voices (need players and managers to step up) will encourage dialing it back. Rather than open up the runway for it to become even more intrusive.

Neil fecking Warnock was calling for VAR last season. Good luck with that.

I’m so happy it was discovered that one cm of the part of the shoulder Sterling would be allowed to score with, was beyond (in all digital likelihood) some body part of a West Ham defender, so the result was 0-5 instead of 0-6.

Clear and obvious, was it?

Exactly. VAR only has a place if it’s hardly ever used but the very nature of it means this won’t happen.

Every goal now to be honest I won’t be celebrating completely until VAR has confirmed it in case someone was 1mm offside in the build up.

Thing is technology is great & an improvement in many areas of life so people just go- Technology = good. Therefore let’s put it in football.

It isn’t good for football, changes the feel of a game & is not an improvement for the game.

Just to keep the easy predictions going...

VAR will dictate rules changes going forward (just as it does every offseason in American sports). Within two years the offsides rule will be daylight between the last defender and attacker. That will lead to an absolute shitshow of goals that should never really be allowed. Then everyone will clamor to change it back to the old way 1-2 years on from that.

And we’ll have had 4 wacky seasons where no one can decide how the game should be played.

When really we’ve known for quite some time how the game should be played and we had gotten our referees to the point of getting more than 90% of their calls correct.

Say it louder for the moaners in the back. American sports have had replays for years. Free flowing games like basketball have not had the “beauty” sucked out of it due to officials reviewing a call/play. This gatekeeping mentality is so tiresome and screams of “Well back in my day footballers smoked cigarettes, drank on the pitch, and played with leather balls filled with the bones of the animal whose skin was used for the ball. :boring: Real men who wore tiny shorts and had beautiful long flowing hair”. It is the future and VAR will become streamlined and more reliable. And were also in the first bloody week!

No. In this poll 58% say they love it. The amount who like it (or at least who are in favour of it) is higher again. Check the poll here:

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/var-decisions-pl-19-20-season.449684/page-5#post-24543552

Which is consistent with any other opinion polls I've seen where 70-75% of fans tend to be in favour of VAR.

I would say though that is probably skewed by the age profile of the people here, not to mention the fact that most caf posters aren't regular match goers.

Needs the option of: when they've managed to figure out how to do it virtually instantly I'll be OK with it.

Well let’s see how people like it when it ruins matches on a weekly basis. Don’t celebrate too early anymore either.

Yet again a majority voted for Brexit so I don’t really care what the percentage is. VAR is terrible & hopefully will go in a few seasons

Look at it this way, pool got a lot of offside goals last season, with var those goals no longer count which mean they can't use their media and ref bias to win games anymore.

Whatever about how the percentages change across the season, I can say with absolute certainty that VAR is here to stay. Aside from the fans currently liking it, the people who run the game are hugely in favour of it and ultimately that's what will tell.

Hopefully it keeps improving as time goes on but ultimately those who hate it will either have to come to terms with it or start watching a different sport. Though finding a sport in 2019 that isn't going to incorporate similar technology on some level will be difficult.

The unpredictable nature of it won't change much.

The accuracy improvement is not worth the net disruption to the flow of the game and the enjoyment of it. It's diabolical that analysts are poring over whether someone's digit is a mm 'offside' . It's ridiculous.

Goal line tech I get and I'm all for but VAR in this form is self made, unnecessary hindrence.

I get your feeling too. If the whole process could be made faster, I'd love it. I feel like in order to get there though, we have to go through these phases. I understand the gripe because of that.
However what I get is the logic going as far as saying I'd prefer to see an offside goal given rather than the correct call. That makes no sense for me

Disagree that VAR will help top clubs stay at the top. It should cancel out ref bias, which normally favours home teams and bigger clubs. If anything, VAR should hinder bigger clubs.

Lets not take decisions away from incompetent clowns like this one from Spurs vs Villa, discussion in pubs guaranteed
What decisions did they take away from him? Were any of his decisions overturned? If not and we all agree he was shite then doesn't that make VAR look pretty weak?

There might have been in the last 20 minutes as I went out.

Totally disagree as it will help teams that attack more. The more time you spend in the opponents penalty area the more chance you have of a VAR decision giving you a penalty.

The classic resistance to change. For better or worse. Not to say one is right or wrong. Why fix something that ain't broke. The element of fortune/chance is a little eroded by such precise and exact regulation and application of rules. It's sterilising the product. I prefer it a bit less exact but that's just me.
I'm not normally resistant to change. I welcome positive change but hate change for the sake of it.
