German Football 20/21

If Leverkusen didn't have the bottling tag from last 20 years I'd be quietly excited about their prospects. Always seem to find incredible young players from around the globe. Likes of Diaby and Tapsoba were fantastic gets and Wirtz seems to be the Havertz replacement. Got some decent players on the bench aswell like Alario and Demirbay.

But of course it's "Neverkusen" and I fully expect to come back in an hour to find Bayern 3 or 4-1 up.

You don't consider Alaba at DM an oddity? When did that last happen, at some point in Pep's injury ravaged second year?
Unusual, yes, but at least he's played there before. I don't think Süle ever played a fullback professionally before, but i could be mistaken.

Last game, and I think for Hoffenheim also at some point early in his career? But I wasn't disagreeing, I wonder whether Flick really made out Pavard as a defensive weak point (which he sometimes indeed seems). And also, I did like Sarr when he played.

Coman off. Of course something had to happen to him when he was in his best form at this club.

It's good to have the best player in the world and the best scorer duo though. Müllewangoalski to the rescue

If someone updated the "Struwelpeter" stories to provide some educational deterrence in CoViD times, there would be one where Rummenigge gets his nose cut off with scissors.

It's really somewhat embarrassing how Kahn seems to be only Bayern official that knows how to wear a mask properly.

Don't really know how to blame for that Leverkusen goal.

Tapsoba for giving the ball away? Tah for completely missing his header? Hradecky for not taking command and clearing the ball or then Dragovic for leaving Lewandowski completely unmarked?

Good match though, what a strike that was by Schick.

Wow, Sane subbed off after coming on, only 40 minutes on the pitch. Damning stuff by Flick.

I can't wrap my head around Sule's size. Boateng is massive, and he looks like a child next to Sule

Btw, re: Sane. Everytime i've seen bayern this season i've seen him played on the right side. Why's that? He's never been meant to play inverted foot. He's an out and out winger, needs to play on his strong foot to be effective

We knew we'd miss Thiago, I just wasn't quite ready for how much we miss him.

Everything about our rhythm is just so much more sloppy and laboured without him.

Classic Leverkusen
Classic Tah
Classic Lewandowski
Classic Bayern

Still an impressive game from Leverkusen though.

He played inverted most of the time for Schalke and the national team as well . Only Pep used him primarily on the left.

It's Kimmich (and of course Goretzka) we really missed in the last weeks and he is btw who now just won the ball for the 2:1 and we were also back in controll with him back on the pitch.

I mean, it's fun to turn matches and all, but we really need to stop conceding all those goals.

Jesus christ Tah, I was about to ask whether he's been good since returning to the starting line-up lately but that mistake just encapsulates him. Was decent the whole game but a pathetic touch costs his team the match and top spot.

All hope is lost for him, he'll end up playing in some midtable team in Germany or somewhere in Eastern Europe in a couple of seasons.

Btw, who got that assist? Fecking Joshua Kimmich, great pressing caused that error.

Tbh, as good as Kimmich is, it was probably more about Tah being tired and not mentally ready to receive that pass, than it was about Kimmich stealing it. He did well to be aware but he was still fresh and Tah miscontrolled the ball badly.

But maybe I have to take another look at the scene to see Kimmich's role in it.

This. Kimmich and Goretzka have so much interceptions that we really lacked the past few weeks. Our "gegenpressing" was almost nonexistent.

It's not either-or, we've been missing Kimmich and Goretzka no doubt, still, we've lost a great deal of rhythm and control in midfield with Thiago, and the Kimmich-Goretzka combination (while strong) doesn't manage to provide it.

Because he wasn't good playing on inverted foot. He is phenomenal on the left

Tah actually had a very solid game aside of his role in both goals. Annoying.

That's classic Tah though.. All the tools to be a genuinely good CB, but then he does something very stupid again and again.
