A lot of older people aren’t happy with the lowering of voting age. They strongly think today’s youth are more immature and do not possess enough experience to be trusted with a vote.

Starmer announcing it as one of his first policies on the road to 4th July also makes it look even more cynical as a policy than it otherwise would. He should have sandwiched this one in at a later date.

I trust the zoomers far more than the boomers.

National service  Anyone able to give me a justification why I should be expected by law to do this shite? Even just hypothetically?

Scrap politics and just give it to Ten Hag once he’s sacked. They’re on a different planet the lot of them.

Banning smartphones for under 16's, national service...keep going Rishi, you're doing great!

You do know that 1 year olds can be liable to pay tax right?
I don't know the english law but in portugal you need a legal guardian authorization to work if you are under 16. Sure you can be 1 and pay taxes, but you don't have the autonomy to do it on your own. When you are 16 you are fully independent, so you should be able to vote.

In English law anyone who has taxable income is liable to tax. There are restrictions regarding when and how an under 16 can work but if they're trading themselves then nearly all of those laws don't apply.

A 12 year old can work without a parent permission?

I’d send all 12 year olds down to fight in Ukraine, that’ll teach. Send the foreigners to Rwanda and the youth to hospitals or Ukraine.

There are obviously many laws which prohibit certain things like children working in factories etc.
Sure, I assumed so. Here, even if it's a 14 year old making youtube videos, they can only pay the kid with the parents permission, otherwise it's illegal.

"Bring back hanging!"

That's gotta be the next policy from Rishi.

I heard on a podcast, I think it was the latest Q&A episode of Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford, that the single most significant predictor for supporting Brexit was supporting the death penalty. Like, that was the thing most Brexiteers had in common.

Or maybe it was another podcast... I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Just seen Tories want to bring back national service, whilst starmer wants to lower the voting age.

Don't agree with either but think Tories will lose a lot more votes with that policy.

I don't mind the idea of lowering the voting age but National Service?

A) It is a stupid idea
B) The military will tell them to feck off
C) Sunac just announced they have no chance of winning
D) see point A

Does he imagine the idiots who will be for this vote labour in meaningful numbers, and the miniscule few who do aren't going to switch for a policy we all know will never ever happen?

So the death penalty next? How about public birching for parking tickets? You know it makes sense.

Child actors need licenses to work and parental consent/chaperones etc...presumably so they can miss school.
Not sure what the rules are for child entrpreneurs. Tax returns are stupidly complicated, so not something child you

Why do stories hate young people? They would never force older people to do anything. Cnuts.

I am old. So I must be in favour of your last paragraph.... but I am most certainly not and I am in favour of lowering the voting age.
Just wanted to clear that up.

I'm 60, so have a few years on me, but I'm the same. I get less and less tolerant of right wing nonsense as I get older.

Me too, a bit older than you, but it's more to do with education and how people are influenced by the media and social media. What annoys me is how people just parrot whatever they've heard somewhere without thinking.

In France, by contrast, Le Pen is more popular with the 25-49 age group. Social media brainwashing.

Is the same not happening in Germany as well? I have heard about the AFD being really popular with the teens/early 20s age range.

If young people voted in the same numbers as older people politicians would pay attention and politics would evolve - but history tells us they are mostly unreliable voters so the main parties focus on middle age and older people either by courting their vote or trying to not be scary and motivating an 'anti-vote'

Depends how it's implemented. Countries like Switzerland do it well. If it's essentially a compulsory vocational scheme that teaches kids a few skills, work ethic etc alongside a bit of weapon training then it would be a good thing. If it's shoving them into basic training for 6 weeks and spending the rest of it repainting tanks then it's a waste of time.

They haven't thought that through though because they know it will never get that far.

Apparently it's this. 30k military placements by choice or volunteering once a month doing non-military duties. I don't quite think it's quite as bad as people are making out.

--

Twelve months of mandatory national service would be reintroduced by the Conservatives if they win the general election.

Eighteen-year-olds would be able to apply for one of 30,000 full-time military placements or volunteering one weekend a month carrying out a community service.

Non-military volunteering would involve 25 days with organisations such as the fire service, the police and the NHS.

It will end up as work for the dole to do cheap irrelevant jobs to give the young unemployed "opportunities" not to sign on or be included in the unemployment figures to cover for the Tories utter feck up on all fronts.

There is quite a big audience of young people who are tuning in to right wing cultural/political commentary, or podcast bros who preach about the virtues of capitalism and the evils of the Nanny State etc. Interestingly, that doesn't seem to be translating to support for the Tories. I suspect in the next few years/decade, the Tories will change their tone and rhetoric a bit to appeal to those sorts of people. If they manage to win some of that demographic they will be dangerous.

It's quite simply that the majority of people hold centre right views as evidenced in elections the world over, but the current Tories have failed to represent those people. That's where I stand. They've fecked up everything they've touched in the last few years so I don't care what their supposed ideology is.
