Wasn't his hand forced though more or less? All the tories acting shocked are just their lying little selves. Autumn elections are avoided at all costs, he dragged it out as far as he could.
Given how far behind the Tories are you would think they would hold out for as long a possible in the hope that something improves. So either they know things will only get worse or Sunak thinks he will be ousted as leader if he hold on much longer. Or both.
Might well have been the ultimate trigger. Given how things have gone since 2016 we shouldn't discount the idea that they don't have much of any plan at all and are just winging it.
The inflation figures are looking better and they’ve put the election a week or two before the euro finals when nationalism will be peaking with a supposed feel good summer sentiment. I don’t think it’s that things are going to get worse, they’ve just recognised that this is the best moment for them.

It's delusional to think that they can boot Rishi out, get a new person in place, move the GE by a few months and expect that this will boost their chances. I know some of the general public will lap up anything but I don't think this is a shitshow they could gloss over.

We haven't had one in my lifetime as far as I can remember (I was born in the early 70s) normally it's always May or June. But what is wrong with autumn before the clocks go back? Is it just a fear of the weather?

Surely Boris's victory in December 2019 proved that they're so cold blooded now days that even a mild UK winter can give them the energy to get Brexit done and then allow them to shed their skins every few months to give the impression of a new leader. The lizards are evolving....
They must be, funnily enough Boris is probably their best bet if they go such a route

To be fair the Americans do it so it can't be too bad. Given that the governing party calls for the election I just think it's generally thought people are more happy with the status quo while everything is getting nicer weather wise. (to be fair I'm just guessing, it's just one of those rules everyone always accepts as true).
With the tories these days I wouldn't be surprised if they just cant be asked to campaign during summer holidays though.

A large Labour majority wouldn't be great. Hoping it's a bit less and they rely on the Lib Dems or something. Some way to get electoral reform passed.
Interesting that the Telegraph aren't running this story from their main man. They also had a photo of Rishi with rolled up sleeves giving a speech indoors, rather than soaking wet at the lectern as their main pic earlier (since replaced by Farage not standing story).

I am trying to decide which one I am looking forward to the most, it's so hard to choose. Fingers particularly crossed for Rees Mogg. But I'm not greedy.
It's never going to happen.
For months Tory rebels have been threatening to bring Sunak down and he's countered by threatening to call an election. It must have got to the point where the rebels had enough or almost enough letters go in, so he's called their bluff and called an election.
Even the dimmest Tory MP must realise that trying to bring a leader down AFTER they call a general election is going to be political suicide for the party.
Jeremy Hunt is one I'd love to see.
There's been a lot of talk that he won't stand though, which would be even more damning for Sunak if his Chancellor has effectively given up!
