Gary Neville

The players can do what they want. Think the issue is if they're posting about what they're doing on social media with smiles on their faces just days after a bad result. It's not that big of a deal but it doesn't look good, considering that 99% of their followers follow them because they're fans of the team.

There's a reason why players tend to have a private social media account alongside their professional one.

I know what he means. Their free time is their free time but it doesn’t give out the best message when you swan off to Dubai at the drop of a hat at every opportunity, like some of our players do. A few of them only went 6 weeks ago as well.

Lineker making more sense than Neville, what has the world come to.
I'd say that's fairly standard. Whenever Neville opens his mouth about United, or Scousers/City for that matter, I try not to pay any attention.

Gary's picked the wrong target. He is clearly annoyed that a lot of the players who are broadcasting their lives are the players that have been letting United down. The players who, many suspect and he may know, have been leaking to the media and undermining the coach. I get it.

But Gary who let this happen in the first place?

Blame the Board. These players have been given an inch, they've taken a mile. Yes, maybe there's an issue there. But the culture that's been created at United is why they behave this way. If you have a bone to pick, pick it with the Board that keeps undermining manager after manager and handing out new well paid deals to players, even when those players fail, even when they only play a handful of matches a year. We're the ones giving the players the ability to act like this. I don't blame the players for not taking responsibility onto themselves when the club keeps excusing them of responsibility.

Gary should be raging at our Board.

Are the Pundit ex-United players now becoming abit of a issue ?
They have been for a long time. What worries me is they want to have a say in how the club is run. Feel that Neville etc will be pro Pochettino, bothered me that Rio did an interview with him a couple of weeks back :nervous:

Honestly, as long as players don't do anything illegal outside of football, I don't really care what they do.
Same. Neville is probably referring to how Fergie used to run things with an iron fist, he used to have spies out making sure players didn't go out etc... that sort of management style just wouldn't fly these days.

Seems mental to me now that he used to outright ban social media. Funny how as soon as he left everyone hopped on Twitter, even the club itself

He had absolute control, those days are gone. No manager in world football will have that sort of power ever again.

I like Gary but its also clear their is a disconnect between him and the current gen players. I don't think its due to his age (as Rio is similar age but has a better understanding) its just down to the type of person he is. Even when he was at united there were players like Rio, like Becks who would be seen out, in the media, etc. If social media was around then 100% Rio, becks etc would be on it, they would be no different to the players today.

People put too much focus on what current players do outside of football. For every footballer you see with a big social media presence underperforming on the pitch, you will see another player in the same position performing on the pitch. 99% of the time there is no correlation.

On a side note I do think its an issue ex players trying to compare what players do now to what they did 10-20 years ago. Its a different generation, a different world.

He's mad. We've close to a three week break between games. What are they supposed to do, put themselves under voluntary house arrest until they get a good result?

Maybe a bit of self-flagellation via live stream so we can really see they're hurting.

He said the board should sell up and go

Same ole sanctimonious bullcrap from our ex players. Adopting utterly rose-tinted glasses when looking back at themselves, and just highlighting how detached they are from current football culture. Having to listed to the likes of Keane, Scholes, etc reel out the same clippable drivel is just not helping anyone and is sort of embarrassing. They're honestly more like AFTV than any of our fans who stick a camera on themselves to whine about football.

So many of our former players seem to be experts at dishing it out whilst living off their former success, yet how many of them have demonstrated any sign of being able to step into management/coaching at anything close to a top level? Just grumbling their way into insignificance. Bit like the club as a whole I guess.

Agreed. I like Neville as a pundit but he's way off here, it's not like the result or anything else changes if the players stay at home feeling embarrassed.

People seem to equate their working lives with the players; you have to be at a different level and commit to a load of negatives, if you want to be a top level player. It's pretty obvious that a lot of our players don't have that mindset, and that is basically what Neville is alluding to, in my opinion. I don't agree with every point that he is making, but in essence, we need more players that aren't able to just not give a shit about how we are playing to this degree, that's pretty obvious.

You don’t have to ban things to have control. Just heavily monitor players social media activity and fine or drop them for anything controversial. They’d soon get bored of it and drop it.

They're more likely to get bored of the club and switch teams.

Social media is a huge part of being a footballer these days.

Gary is getting a bit too much exposure these days, I don't mind his opinions generally but he is not a spokesperson for the club or the fans...give it a rest Gary!

In my opinion, they are a massive problem in that they have successfully poisoned the fans' relationship towards their team.
They have shaped and are constantly driving home the narrative that this United team is morally failing rather than just not performing quite well enough. I think it's on the whole a wrong, bitter, and fateful narrative and looking at a lot of the posts in this place too many fans have taken to it.

The club needs spokespeople pushing back, problem is the only person who ever speaks is the manager.

Well said

I think the essence of his tweets is that it’s not a good look . No one is asking them not to go or do things but as a fan it is rather disappointing to get the impression that what happens on the pitch doesn’t matter a lot to them . I am sure they care about winning but at United it seems like from top to bottom that they don’t care enough

I don't need the opinions of ex players to form my own on this lot. I can't stand most of them, which is fine as you stop idiolising players after a certain age.

Scholes ate his daughter's toenails and Gary kissed him mouth to mouth in the game vs City.
That's all I can say.

I find it hard to take his word on this sort of stuff seriously when he made such a big song and dance about criticizing Ole.

He's always chatted bollox but his hypocrisy was exposed during that period.

For example did he criticize Ole and the Players for taking that holiday after the defeats to Liverpool and City?

For all that "He's a fan and he's angry" talk , do you honestly think that helps your club?

It's like someone on Arsenal Fan TV has a national platform to spread their toxicity and for some reason the vast majority see this as a guy who "Speaks sense".

And finally , If Fergie was still around the first person he would be telling to shut the feck up on social media would be Gary Neville.

And people say he doesn't love the club. He's a diehard fan he's disgusted at how far we've fallen and he let's his emotions get the better of him at times
One could love the club and still have loads of agenda and bias when evaluating things wrong at the club. Not to mention have opinions that doesn't make sense.

This sums it up perfectly. The squad was assembled under a manager he wouldn’t criticise. His rants are highly agenda driven & it just stinks of going for low hanging fruit. He is, as you say becoming a parade of AFTV levels. We get it already.

Linekar puts him firmly in his place as did the response about someone having a bad week at work. He continues to stir up a terrible atmosphere between players & fans.

God No. I couldn't stand it in Arsenal Forum. You can only hear the voice from one side and it is unbearable.
