Gareth Southgate resigns as England Manager

Let’s hope we get off to a good start with Southgate likely to be available…

He had to go - Did a brilliant job initially of resetting the squad culture and building an enviornment that players want to be a part of and that fans can get behind.

Team has completely outgrown him now though... hopefully we can get someone like Poch in to take us to the next level.

Will be very interesting to see what job Southgate takes next... I don't feel like his stock is actually high enough to be able to get a Prem job?!

ETH would have to be doing such a remarkably terrible job for GS to get a look in.

Hes done the right thing and left before things went toxic which I think the potential was there to happen.

Englands second best manager, not a bad job, but think hes probably realised hes taken them as far as he can.

Don't fancy any of the englishmen. Potter has a blight on his name managing big names at chelsea and i dont think howe would leave Newcastle.

Poch would be a decent option if i got to choose. Dream would be klopp, id even give up my no german rule for him, but theres 0 chance of that happening.
I don’t know klopp needs a rest so why not take on a part time job?

The fact that he was on £5m annual salary vs. £1m of the Spanish coach is just astonishing.

Hopefully someone can come in and help this England side realize it's potential.

I think we will look back as his reign in a nicer light in a few years time. He's done his job, probably a tournament or so longer than it should have been, but I do think its the right decision.

I'm worried who the FA will hire to replace him though.

That would be fantastic tbf. I'm not really ok tbh, was hoping for a long stay for Sir Gareth.
It does not matter who the england manager is. What matters is they're england. They could hire Guardiola and discover he's the worst international manager of all time

England will keep losing until they reset their culture around the NT. As long as they keep up this narrative, the 50 years of heartbreak, it's coming home, we should win something, their players and managers will continue to choke

What?

Yes, it's actually David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds fault.

A sad day for Welsh, Irish, and Scots everywhere. :(
Not really. 1 semi and 2 finals, Southgate had us all sweating on football coming home more than any other England manager in 60 years.

Your football wasn't great but of the teams that have won Euros and World Cups over the last 20 years, which teams stand out with beautiful football? Tournaments are about half a dozen games. It's not the place for eye-catching football really. You do what you have to to go far.

I think it's a shame really that he still gets this much ridicule. A seemingly inoffensive man who did more than every other manager you've ever had, except one, but just couldn't squeak over the line.

Poor old Southgate is a bit of a tragic footballing figure really. The penalty at Euro 96, UEFA Cup final in 2006, the two Euro finals. He's destined to get almost there.

What's hard to understand? England put waaaay too much pressure and expectation on their team. They need to stop putting so much pressure and expectation on their team
It's just a nonsense observation to blame that for the Italy and Spain results.

Really? Pressure and expectations had nothing to do with losing a penalty shootout? In their first final in 50 years, at Wembley?

This opinion is adorable. Especially after the last few tournaments. If you were saying this in 2010, maybe.

This tournament, all you heard coming out the england's camp was how much external noise was affecting them

Reaching a penalty shootout means you've had 120 minutes to win a game, and it was not due to pressure and expectations that the game was not won in those 120 minutes.

All of you will cry and pray to have him back when England is drawn in the same group with Brazil, Germany and Italy.

Good, feck off you cnut.

Can't stand Southgate and never could. Found myself not supporting England simply because Southgate was the manager.

I expect his luck will disappear too, so look forward to our next World Cup group including Brazil and France and when we crash out in the group stages, everyone saying the new manager is shite compared to Southgate.

The amount of backtracking on Talkshite yesterday, from "we're going to win the Euros, Southgate is the greatest manager ever, I hope he stays on" to "we knew he was shite all along".

The only manager who, I think, could get the best out of this group would be Eddie Howe. Whether or not he would leave Newcastle is debatable, but the FA pay ridiculous amounts to England managers, so you never know.

I'm assuming Steve Holland has gone with him? That would probably be the more impactful change.
