Oh, you mean that Messi who lead Argentina to a runner-up place at the last World Cup and Copa America. Gotcha. True, what exactly has Messi done on the international stage!
Messi didn't "lead" Argentina to the runner-up place.
They had a relatively easy group of Iran, Nigeria & Bosnia & Herzegovina. Favorites by far.
They had a lucky draw and went up against Switzerland, Belgium & a Netherlands that had to change their whole game-play and formation due to the injury of Kevin Strootman. (all of whom they barely beat)
They were clear favorites. Yes, Messi did play well, but they were clear favorites.
Sure Argentina underperformed on the pitch, and Messi scored 4 goals to bail them out, but that's not to say that he was the one leading them.
Messi got the golden ball because of his name. Many were angry/(insert whatever word describes it) that he won in front of Rodriguez, Muller or even Neuer. There were even a lot of people arguing that Messi was even behind Mascherano for Argentina.
The funny thing is, Messi didn't even make the all-star team.
Now, I'm not a Messi hater, I think he is a fantastic player, the best in the world for me regardless if he would have sat by a corner to take a shit, and for it to have been his best highlight from the world cup (trying to imply how little I think the arguement of "international football results" should matter);
But to say he lead Argentina to the world cup final just seems very, very wrong.
