ummm as a first choice CB, I would stick my neck out and say yes!

Real won the CL last year with Pepe, Ramos and Varane as their CB options. Till few weeks back, Chelsea were running away with the league with Terry and Cahill. City play Mangala there. Barca play the likes of Mascherano and Pique.

My point is, a lot more than individually world class players go into the making of a side that can compete for honours. This same Cahill Terry partnership looked so shit pre-Mourinho that people expected Terry to call it a day.

Under the right setup and more importantly continuity in partnership which is very very key in defence, the sum of parts in defence looks better than individuals.

I know Smalling divides opinions here but in him I see a player who has immense potential. What he needs is a stable partner to play with in the right setup and more importantly, luck with his injuries. If he gets these 2, he'l surprise a lot of people here. This is why I believe we only need 1 CB if the likes of Smalling and Jones can stay fit. I'd love Godin here, much rather have him than Hummels. Him and Smalling in a middle 2 would be very good.

I disagree big time. I still really think Smalling when fit is a quality centre back.. I can't say the same about Evans and Jones.. but Smalling is worth keeping. Pair him up with someone solid and sort rest of side out we'd be fine.

Our defenders have to defend a lot more than other top sides because we are not creating chances at will or keeping ball in attacking areas long enough.
really? I respectfully disagree....
poor touch on the ball, poor intelligence on the pitch...doesn't throw his weight around...horrendous distribution....tackling is ok....marking is a gamble....the number of goals I've seen that look like a Smalling error....!

He's exactly what we need, can play up the top and scare people with his pace, or play him a little wider in a 433, would add pace, creativity, ability to beat a man, big game player, star quality, everything.

Personally don't think he'll leave Real, but he'd be the ideal signing.

Does Duncan Castles not like us very much? His recent Bleacher report article would indicate not.

Also seem to think that our late bid last year included Hernandez, and us taking Adebayor.

Not sure what the rules on pasting articles are but was posted today.

Nope, he's really got something against us. Not seen anything from him in a while but his articles on us always seem to have an agenda. I don't know who he supports but our success has obviously damaged him, which makes me feel good.

I thought he had a thing against Liverpool. Maybe he's just a terrible journalist.

Thanks, that explains alot.

Think he must have just re-watched 'The Premiership years 98-99' before he wrote this one!

I think he's a Chelsea fan for some reason.

He's not really playing like a 100m player this season. But it can also come because of everything seems to be focused on Ronaldo in Madrid. He does have some weakness when playing with less space.

He never played like a 100mil player, never, not even close. If we pay more then 50-60mil (which is I think is way to much) we are total idiots.

He's isn't bad like many seems to suggest, but he suits a specific type of game. Counter-attacking style with his pace suits him. IMHO 60/65 should be the max United should offer. Anything more than that is stupid from what we have seen this season. If they sign Reus, I think they would like to get rid of someone.

I agree, even if I think the price is to high, you it's how it works today. But, I just don't see how he would fit into LVG's team, because we try to keep the ball and press teams (one of the reasons di Maria has problems). Bale wouldn't fit at all.

What would people say if PSG bought Bale and we bought Lucas? Somehow I'd prefer that, could be wrong though.

Bale is a very good player but as soon as he loses his pace he wont be half the player he is. His technical ability is lacking badly for him to change his game and still be effective imo.

He's in far better form than Bale this season and is basically carrying an underperforming PSG side. I wouldn't be against it.

I think he's fantastic. For all the talk of needing pace in the team, they don't come much quicker than Lucas. Always been a big fan.

I also like about him, the few times I've seen him, that he actually puts in a shift defensively, that can hardly be said about Bale these days.

True but look at Robben, he seems to be getting faster and is 31 next week. Bale is 25 and if we got 6-8 years of top service out of him it would be money well invested.

Well is it worth spending £120 million on a player who will be almost useless if he picks up a bad injury on his hamstring? I think he's worth about half of that if i'm being honest, crazy amount to pay for a player who solely relies on his pace to make him what he is.

On current form he's not worth £12 million let alone £120 million.

Looks completely lost in this team.

Haven't been keeping up with the goings on here. Is there actually fuel to this ('this' being the transfer, not the ridiculous £120 million that would never happen)?

It's not beyond possibility that if Madrid win the league this season, Bale will sit there and consider that he's already won the main trophies, doesn't love it all as much as he thought he would, and may want to come back to he UK and be the main man again.
Meanwhile Madrid may decide "okay, he's allowed us to flex our financial muscle, helped us win the two big trophies, but he's not completely convinced us and can still fetch good money. Time to move on to someone else."

I just have a slight hunch that both parties will be happy to say "thanks and goodbye" in the near future.
I tend to be pessimistic, but if Bale's indeed leaving Madrid soon, he's 100% coming back to England, and he's 100% coming to United. £60 million (and I don't see it being more than that, if even that much) and I wouldn't be grumbling.

He's a match winner on a different level to Depay and Reus. And, like Fabregas, he's simply suited to this league. No questions asked - he joins; he delivers. The club has a player who changes the whole dynamic of the team, a match winner and a poster boy all in one.

He's simply not worth it. What could be bring to the table that is worth that much? We can get a world class player for a third of that.

The £120m figure is too high, and most likely plucked out of thin air. Close to what Madrid paid for him is a fari amount in the current climate and our situation. I would absolutely love it if he joined us. United can use the excitment a player like Bale would bring to the table; it has been a while since we have had an abolustely top class winger.

Bale, Scheneiderlin, Coleman and a top CB has the potential to catapult us to the very top. Shouldn't be too hard to acheive in this window and the next.
We can recoup a fair amount by letting Mata, Fellaini, Hernandez, Nani, Evans & Rafael leave.

We won't be selling these two, and rightly so, they have impressed under van Gaal.

At the prices mentioned, no thanks.

We could potentially get* Clyne, Strootman, Gundogan, Hummels and Reus for the same amount of money, leaving us with a top quality squad.

Wages would increase, but we're probably getting Falcao, Fletcher, Nani (& a couple more) etc off the wage bill.

*not saying we should be in for those exact names and that they'd even be willing to come here, but just making a point.

Would anyone sell Di Maria to fund the proposed Bale purchase?

Nope. They'd probably undervalue Di Maria while giving that outrageous price for Bale, we'd have to add up loads and no to mention for that price we could revamp almost the entire squad which would even better.

Bale absolutely destroyed this league when he was at Tottenham. He isn't in great form at Madrid, but it's not the easiest club in the world to play at.

If Bale came here he'd be scoring 30 odd goals a season again.

I was hoping Di Maria would be our Bale and hopefully he can become a great player for us to justify the fee. I was also hoping LVG would build a team perhaps not going down the "we've just spent 150m and rumours are we'll be spending the same again"
route. There's alot of managers in Europe that could do this.

We could assemble a whole team with that money. Ed has to wise-up.

In fairness the market has changed. I dont think we brought LVG in to save money, we brought him in to bring back the control that Fergie had. Was ridiculous how outspoken players were last season. I'd much prefer to see the best players in the world playing at United rather than taking punts on the likes of Valencia and Young.

Oh indeed, I've never said he was a £120m player, if we pay more than £60m we're idiots.
