Gareth Bale Transfer Speculation | Done

'Interested'. He never said "i rejected Manchester United" or "I chose Spurs over United". And if he did say those words he'd be lying because we never got past the usual protocol of permission from his club.

This was said before we went to WHL this season:

Ferguson said: “We tried to buy him from Southampton and they turned us down. It was not the boy who turned us down, it was Southampton, then a few weeks later he signed for Tottenham."

And given the fact Sir Alex had nothing to save face about regarding Bale, you know because of those 5 Premier League titles won out of the last 7 and an array of top quality talent at his disposal regardless, I think I'm going to believe him.

It still a form of rejection, he wanted first team football, and didn't think he would get it if join united. Simples.

They talk so much shit about shirt sales, they only get about 6/7 euros a shirt, which equates to selling 8M EXTRA shirts to get 57M.

If that was at all true, why would transfer fees be so low?

I mean they're literally making profit on the deal (minus his wages) the idea that you can somehow make 57 million through shirt sales is so utterly ridiculous it's depressing that anyone who had given it more than a seconds thought could believe it.

If Barcelona pocketed the full €60 from every Neymar shirt sold (which they certainly don't), they'd need to sell just shy of 1,000,000 shirts.

Is it possible to sell one million shirts in a few weeks?

P.S Shirts with names on the back cost nearer to €100 than €60 in Spain. I was in Barcelona last summer and all the shirts with names on them cost circa. €100.

Most of that 120 mil will be recouped from shirt sales.

I saw somewhere on the Internet that Barca have sold 570 000 Neymar shirts worth of 100 euros, which means they had already made the 57 million they spent.
That's really not how it works.

Ha well it has been ages since I bought a shirt but you might be right, the prices are much higher these days it seems.

Well even than I don't believe they are making all that much of a shirt sale tbh would be interesting if someone had a chart to show how much a club actually makes on shirt sales.

Which means they would have to sell probably more than 1m shirts.

Turnover doesnt equal profit.

Short answer. Its complete bollocks.

Long answer, once the actual cost of the shirt is taken into account, thats the manufacturers cut plus the actual cost of selling them, unless you are trying to say Barca employ their own sweatshop workers to make their own shirts, they will make, at best 10% of retail.

Even if we are generous and say they make 15 euros per shirt, that equates to 3.8 MILLION shirt sales to make 57 million euros.

Imagine the total revenue of the clubs, if that was true. Barca had a commercial revenue of €186.9m in 11/12. That includes all sponsorshipdeals as well as other things. I highly doubt that the club makes even close to 50m a year with all shirt sales, let alone 57m in a few weeks for one new player. And I higly doubt that Bale will sell as many shirts as Neymar.

3.8 million EXTRA shirt sales to make 57 million euros. They would have sold a large number irrespective of whether they signed Neymar or not.

Indeed.
And we haven't even mentioned image rights and how much of a cut of the profit (which is exaggerated at 15 euros already) the player gets straight into his pocket as well.

Even if they have it's far from all profit... LOLZ..

Exactly. I never understand this "recoup" all your money from shirt sales talk.

It's more likely they recoup the money from commercial revenue/sponsorships because if I'm not mistaken, Madrid control or take a percentage of the players image rights, as opposed to shirt sales.

Understandable shirt sales increase, but there's Adidas' portion of the profit to account for and who's to say the person who buys a "Bale" shirt, wasn't going to buy a shirt anyway?

57mil in a few weeks, Jesus H. We should start making and selling our shirts ourselves. Imagine the AMOUNT of money, Glazers would be rolling in it. Every shirt - a cool 60£ profit! 300mil fans world wide, that's £18 000 000 000 a year, and that if everyone buys only one shirt. War chest? War Tanker full of chests more like.

Someone's been messing with wikipedia again...

With Real Madrid the shirt sales thing is more of a metaphor - Perez uses it to assess which players are just "players" and which ones are marketing assets.

Ronaldo's purchase led to more VIP tickets sold (they were averaging 3000 empty tourist/VIP places per match prior to his arrival - filling those in itself was worth over 10m year). The shirt logo sponsor Betwin at the time doubled it's fee to extend the contract by an extra year. Adidas did something similar. They added a bunch of new sponsors.

The net effect was that Madrid's revenue and profits continued to grow faster than Barcelona, at a time when Barcelona had a far more successful team.

AS joked about Perez knowing how to "win the summer" but not knowing how to "win the Spring" trophy season.

The money we'd be gain would be incredible. Think of all the holidays the Glazers would be able to go on! And we'd maybe sign Leon Osman too of course.

Informative as always, jo. A pleasure reading your insight into Spanish football matters, I must say.

One things for sure, Madrid won't be making the money back on shirt sales anyway. It's GARETH BALE, he doesnt have anywhere near the brand value a player like Ronaldo does (or did when he signed for Madrid). Madrid deserve to fail for many more years if they go through with this transfer, absolutely mental

That shirt sales thing is a load of bollocks... The most prominent shirt I see is Manchester United's, does that mean we've £700 billion to spend this summer?

I also fail to see how they estimate a specific name on a shirt sales.

It would be pretty satisfying if they didn't win the CL for another few seasons after all of the reckless money they've spent. Even if I still respect Ronaldo as a player, the thought of him only winning it with us is nice.
