Gareth Bale Transfer Speculation | Done

I really hope that £81m wasn't bid for Gareth Bale. The transfer market is already ridiculous, but it's in severe danger of outright destruction if that sort of thing starts happening.

It's not possible to have "outright destruction" in the transfer market.

At worst, large numbers of clubs could hold out for wildly unrealistic prices for their players and thus the volume of sales would radically reduce. But this wouldn't last for long, since as demand fell so would prices eventually ... leading to a pickup in demand.

And besides, some clubs HAVE to sell to stay financially viable.

Any team that pays more than 60m, which is already overpriced, for Bale is run by idiots. Don't think anyone will and he'll go for less than that, whenever it happens.

I just mean in the sense of the market getting altogether completely ridiculous, with players that aren't absolutely top drawer regularly going for 50m and above. Outright destruction is a poor use of words.

This day is obviously coming, but Bale going for £81m would be another one of those landmarks. I rate Bale - it's difficult not to - but £81m is so absurd that it's difficult to put into words.

more like

Alonso Illarramendi
Isco Ozil Bale
Ronaldo
with Modric, Khedira, Benzema, De Maria, Callejon in back up
No way would ronaldo be forced to play up front, he doesn't like it and you aren't going to play him out of position for someone like bale.

Bale and Ronaldo would obviously be on the wings if they signed him. Isco probably competing with Ozil for role behind the striker and Modric surely sold or competing for CM place finally.

I think one of either Modric/Khiedra will definitely be available because i can't see them not starting Illarramendi after the 30m fee and Alonso not starting. We have hope afterall :D

£85m for Bale is a fair price.

The best player in the PL, young, only going to improve and loads of years left on the contract.

Obviously, if the player agitates for a move or if the years run down on the contract, the price will be lower, but at this point, his stock could not be higher. A world record fee just seems apt.

He is at his peak currently, but 85m is not even close to being a fair price and a World record fee is only apt for a player who is the best in the world and Bale is far from being the best in the world.

Bale for £81m who had won a grand total of feck all and had one decent spell in the CL?

What a joke. Ronaldo went for £80 and his CV was three times as good as Bale's...

How can Gareth Bale be blamed for Spurs not winning anything?

I am an Arsenal fan and I can still see because I'm not completely blind that this guy basically was Tottenham Hotspur last season.

Check out the goal against West Ham in the last minute. Likewise v Southampton. Likewise v Sunderland. Three absolutely astonishing goals and at the most crucial moments in games. The mark of a player who can produce under immense pressure.

When he played in the CL, he destroyed teams. He will again.

He is dynamite. He might not be the best player in the world, but his transfer fee will be enormous for good reason.

You have said it all in that post. His top moments were against the likes of West Ham, Southampton and Sunderland. His best CL moment was against an old aged pensioner Inter Milan.

He is a great player who I would love at United but the kind of figures being thrown around for him are stupid when you compare the potential transfer to being worth more than that of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Its because you're an Arsenal fan that you want to make out your rivals are a one man team. One man who is likely to move on soon.

He's a brilliant, brilliant player but of course he's not worth setting a new world record fee for.

Right.

Transfer fees have risen since Ronaldo's sale. I've said it before on here, but even though Ronaldo was a world record fee, I reckon he was worth more. His fee was probably knocked down a bit because he really wanted to leave. Easily £90-100m, Ronaldo's true value to Real Madrid.

I quoted a few examples of goals under immense pressure at the end of games. It doesn't matter who the opposition are - the goals he scored would have been scored regardless of the defence, that's how good they were.

And if that doesn't satisfy you - he scored twice v Arsenal last year(one really good goal I had the misfortune to see at the Emirates). He also scored a great goal against United and scored a lovely dink v Man City.

He can score against anyone. He's a wonderful player.

With that price tag, surely he's bound to fail to live up to expectations.

If transfer fees have risen since Ronaldo, why is Ronaldo's still the record paid in that time by a clear £25 million?

The very top end fees havent risen. There are still 3 players out of the top 5 fees ever paid that happened in 2009, the same summer as Ronaldo.

No one is disputing how good of a player he is, but he is still nowhere near the level of Ronaldo and Messi and his transfer fee should reflect that.

He is still unproven at the very highest level and on a regular basis. It is like Suarez.

Players have different brackets that become achievable in terms of a realistic figure depending on their current standing in world football. In my opinion it is unthinkable to have Bale as the most expensive player in the world when he is pretty much unknown in the Champions League, give or take that decent performance against Inter Milan a few years ago.

I can see your logic, but at the end of the day, £80m was and still is an outlier. 5 years later and nobody has come within £20m of it... how often has that happened before? Now that other transfer fees are finally looking like they may catch up it's easy to ignore what a preposterous amount of money it was at the time.

Ronaldo's value was surely inflated by his huge marketing potential. Bale is a less marketable player, but I don't see him as any less of a footballer than Ronaldo was at the point he joined Madrid. It's only because he's been playing for Spurs that Bale doesn't have any kind of silverware to speak of.

Bale has been excellent, no doubt, but I think time has diluted memories of just how good Ronaldo was for us.

Absolutely. Ronaldo was perhaps the best player in the world at the time. He was at the very least already among the top few. The fact that he's actually gotten better since doesn't change that fact. Bale is excellent, and may get better, but I would much rather have that Ronaldo than this Bale. Of course, Real being Real want both.

I'm convinced Madrid have launched this bid just to make Glaston look even more foolish.

If RM actually have bid £86m I'd have no great problem with selling.

That sum is the equivalent of what we've recently paid for Vertonghen, Lloris, Sandro, Dembele and Paulinho - plus what we've reportedly paid for Soldado - all combined.

I can see where you're coming from and you're at least putting across some valid points for your argument unlike TR who seems intent on spouting nonsense about the fact that he hasn't won this or that, or that he's apparently unproven at the top level which is also nonsense, but even then I think £80m is still ridiculous for Bale.

He's adapted his game a lot now and is much better than the winger who can simply bomb up and down and have the occasional good game and he's undoubtedly a world class player now, but when you see a number of the transfers this summer such as Falcao and potential ones such as Fabregas, there's no legitimate reason for him to go for £80m. Even if the market value has increased since 2009, he's still a far way from being worth what Ronaldo was because Ronaldo was a far superior player. Given a year and even more improvement, it could be mildly justifiable. For now though, he's worth £60m at the very, very most and that's probably exaggerating it.

Jeez, surely that cant be true, if it is...

1 Real are retards for offering that much
2 Spurs are bigger retards for turning it down.

I hope he stays, has a shit season and see his value plummet.

Bale has been excellent, no doubt, but I think time has diluted memories of just how good Ronaldo was for us.

Definitely. For two seasons, twice the player. Not literally obviously but a long way ahead of him. It'd be crazy if Gareth Bale were to be the one to break that record, but I suppose rationality in the transfer market went out the window long ago.
