There had been games in which the most stellar names in the Champions League had been vanquished; occasions where the excellence of a player such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry or Steven Gerrard had set his team apart. Even so, Gareth Bale’s ravaging of Inter Milan stood out.
In one of the most mesmerising displays of the modern era - comparable perhaps to George Best’s destruction of Benfica that resulted in the legend of El Beatle - Bale rendered Maicon ordinary, vulnerable, almost fragile.
Martin Samuel:
Well, that's some praise... Can't comment for I haven't seen the game. Was Bale that good?

This is the most ridiculous overhyping of a player I think I've ever witnessed.
He hasn't even been Tottenham's best player this season, and Tottenham on the whole haven't even been playing particularly well.
He beat Maicon with raw pace, I mean there was no dribbling in there, he just touched the ball and bloody ran... It was so feckin' fast, no one could keep up with him...
Who is quicker ? Bale vs Hernandez ?
VdV hasn't been all that either, Modric is the one who's been consistently excellent. You could argue that. VDV has been stunning but Bale has been equally good. He does not have that many goals to show for it but he sets up half the goals and gives defenders a torrid time with the runs he makes.

Modric has been their best player, and VDV's easily more talented than Bale.
and does he really set up half their goals? Have you checked how many assists he actually has or tends to get on average? It's actualy somewhat poor for a winger...let alone a supposedly world class one.
Doesn't he have 0 assists in the league?
Why does it matter who is quicker?
What happens when defenders figure him out?
Bale is being hidously overhyped by some but then there are some doing their best to under-hype what good form he's in.
He was brilliant against Inter. He really was. Had Valencia, or any of our players for that matter, produced that kind of display against a team of that quality then there would be a massive thread on this forum debating if that player was better than Ronaldo.

Dangerous player yes, but mostly undeserved at this stage. Let the hype machine roll on, I'd much prefer to see Bale copping it all than the likes of Wilshere and Walcott, who keep on putting in quality performances every time they hit the field.
Maybe that has happened in the Premier League? Hence no assists.
First season in Europe so may take the defenders a few games to know how to play him. Having said that, he still made mugs of Lucio and Maicon.
It's all about opinions. Mine is that Bale has been our best player thus far this season, followed by:VdV hasn't been all that either, Modric is the one who's been consistently excellent.

Bale has performed far better than Walcott, throughout this calendar year.
Not this season he hasn't, or at least it's up for debate. Walcott's been playing very well and adding a lot of end product.

Telegraph have Bale down as creating 27 chances, 1 ahead of Chelsea's highest Malouda, 5 ahead of our highest Berbatov (Nani has 15), and 8 ahead of Arsenal's highest Nasri.
This looks like an even more shit stat than 'assists'. How can you make 27 'chances' and not one of them end up in the back of the net?Telegraph have Bale down as creating 27 chances, 1 ahead of Chelsea's highest Malouda, 5 ahead of our highest Berbatov (Nani has 15), and 8 ahead of Arsenal's highest Nasri.
