He ripped maicon apart but didn't rafael mostly have him in his pocket? funny that.

Martin Samuel:

There had been games in which the most stellar names in the Champions League had been vanquished; occasions where the excellence of a player such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry or Steven Gerrard had set his team apart. Even so, Gareth Bale’s ravaging of Inter Milan stood out.

In one of the most mesmerising displays of the modern era - comparable perhaps to George Best’s destruction of Benfica that resulted in the legend of El Beatle - Bale rendered Maicon ordinary, vulnerable, almost fragile.

Well, that's some praise... Can't comment for I haven't seen the game. Was Bale that good?

True, the lad is in stunning form and is Spurs golden boy at the moment but this morning I've read things in the paper saying that 'there's no better player in the world at the moment on form than Gareth Bale'

I mean come on, the lad is playing superbly, but to say at this moment in time he's the best in the world is just a tad OTT. But then again that's the British press for you.

Would have been a decent value signing a couple of years back, but we got Nani and Anderson, so it's not all bad

This is the most ridiculous overhyping of a player I think I've ever witnessed.

He hasn't even been Tottenham's best player this season, and Tottenham on the whole haven't even been playing particularly well.

You could argue that. VDV has been stunning but Bale has been equally good. He does not have that many goals to show for it but he sets up half the goals and gives defenders a torrid time with the runs he makes.

He beat Maicon with raw pace, I mean there was no dribbling in there, he just touched the ball and bloody ran... It was so feckin' fast, no one could keep up with him...

Who is quicker ? Bale vs Hernandez ?

Why does it matter who is quicker?

VdV hasn't been all that either, Modric is the one who's been consistently excellent.

Modric has been their best player, and VDV's easily more talented than Bale.

and does he really set up half their goals? Have you checked how many assists he actually has or tends to get on average? It's actualy somewhat poor for a winger...let alone a supposedly world class one.

I read somewhere that Bale has set up more chances than any other player in the Prem but, hilariously, he doesn't have a single assist to his name.

I think his technique is a bit underrated. He allegedly did a Zidane against Maicon and Lucio the other day (I haven't seen that bit yet) and that goal vs Stoke was sublime.

Lets see how and what he does in the next couple of months shall we?

Compare it to players who have been bought for £30m+...or even say, Nani, or Malouda, or the likes of Theo Walcott.

I'm betting he'll be lagging a long, long way behind any of them.

Doesn't he have 0 assists in the league?

Dangerous player yes, but mostly undeserved at this stage. Let the hype machine roll on, I'd much prefer to see Bale copping it all than the likes of Wilshere and Walcott, who keep on putting in quality performances every time they hit the field.

Bale is being hidously overhyped by some but then there are some doing their best to under-hype what good form he's in.

He was brilliant against Inter. He really was. Had Valencia, or any of our players for that matter, produced that kind of display against a team of that quality then there would be a massive thread on this forum debating if that player was better than Ronaldo.

Well, he IS playing really well right now so there is no questions a player should be hyped.

Is he overhyped ? Only time can tell, if he can keep his stellar performances up then he wouldn't be overhyped.

Samuel is perhaps, as usual overusing the superlatives.

To be fair it was probably the best individual performance I've seen in a Champions league game for as long as I can remember, largely becuase of the occaision and the opposition.

Maybe that has happened in the Premier League? Hence no assists.

First season in Europe so may take the defenders a few games to know how to play him. Having said that, he still made mugs of Lucio and Maicon.

He's been very good in the PL this year and too much is made of stats. he's been doubled up on in a lot of games and he'll have to learn to deal with that. He is only 21 and there's no reason why he can't continue to develop and become a really world class player. he clearly has all teh tools at his disposal.

It's all about opinions. Mine is that Bale has been our best player thus far this season, followed by:

* VdV (6 goals and 2 assists already ... that's excellent for a player who is not a striker as such and didn't even arrive at the club until after our 3rd league game)

* Modric (was a bit off in the first few games, but is now really cooking with gas).

Yeah, but the only people actually debating it would be idiots.

and I don't think he's being underhyped. It's a simple question of whether you think he's worth "breaking the bank" for.

Nani, Walcott and Malouda have all been far more productive this season (and in general throughout their careers), and none of them were bought for, or would justify the kind of fee Tottenham would command for Bale.

For the kind of fee you'd be paying for Bale, you'd be wanting a Rooney/Ronaldo level of player, which some people seem to have bizarrely decided Bale is.

Bale has performed far better than Walcott, throughout this calendar year.

Not this season he hasn't, or at least it's up for debate. Walcott's been playing very well and adding a lot of end product.

Telegraph have Bale down as creating 27 chances, 1 ahead of Chelsea's highest Malouda, 5 ahead of our highest Berbatov (Nani has 15), and 8 ahead of Arsenal's highest Nasri.

I'd rather Walcott...there's a far less limited player in there than from what I've seen with Bale.

Though for £30m odd, I wouldn't want either.

Stats aside, Bale looks the dogs bollocks.

Look how far he's come in a season. Walcott has pretty much been the same player for 3 years.

This looks like an even more shit stat than 'assists'. How can you make 27 'chances' and not one of them end up in the back of the net?
