Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

I had Joff's death spoiled for me by accidentally entering the Book thread on this forum ('cos I'm a moron) - this was sometime last year mind, so I didn't actually know when he was going to die... so it was still somewhat of a surprise when it came.

That's the only thing I've had spoiled for me... the only other thing is people saying stuff like "Holy Shit that ending!" or something similar on facebook - and though it's not a spoiler at all, it's a bit annoying.

I was on a you tube the other day watching a video completely unrelated to anything about GOT. About 4 comments down, somebody had posted a load of GOT spoilers. Luckily I've read the reverse skoob but I would have been well pissed off if I hadn't. People are arseholes.

When Bianca says her final 'you know nothing John Snow', I would have loved it if he replied 'I know you're about to die'

I've not read the books and I too would be pissed! But have to admit, its quite funny

Some cnut in the newbs spoiled joffreys death for me. He then claimed he was "speculating" when he realised what he had done and got away with it

I caught up late so knew the ending of Series 1 and 3 which was a bit shit. Then I was up to date but watched the episode where Joffrey dies on Sky Atlantic but someone in my work watched in US so ruined that for me, they also ruined Ygritte dying. Keep claiming they do it by accident but I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose. They've just started watching Breaking Bad so I'm constantly checking where they're up to and am gonna spoil it for them I think just to spite them. Luckily they had the day off after the most recent episode so I could watch it spoiler free!

Similar thing happened. Just before I watched the Red Wedding, I was reading the comments section on some gaming news which was totally unrelated to GOT and some idiot said "No! First Rob Stark now this!" which I didnt really pay attention to but THEN another bigger idiot says "You just told everyone that Rob Stark dies in this episode of GOT you idiot what if they havent seen it" which completely ruined that episode for me.

So far I've had - Ned's death, the red wedding, Joffrey's death, Oberyn's death and Tyrion killing Twin all spoiled for me so none of them came as a surprise to me. The only thing which hasn't been spoiled for me was Renly dying, but that was shit anyway.

Basically, avoid YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Buzzfeed, IGN and basically the entire internets to stay spoiler free

I generally stay away from comments sections of the entire internet - if I need peoples opinions on matters, I come ot the Caf! That's not just for GoT either, thats just because the internet is 99% morons.

I do avoid facebook as best I can on a Monday and Tuesday (I usually watch the episode on Tuesday eve) so i keep myself quite restricted really.

I know it's taboo to mention them but I would highly recommend those who haven't read the books read them in this year break from the TV show we now have. They really are superb and IMO much better and deeper than the TV show. Having read them hasn't ruined my enjoyment of the show in any way either.

Sorry if it's a silly question, but where exactly do I start in the books to pick up from the end of season 4?

A Feast of Crows.

I wouldn't, though.

As in, you wouldn't just start reading them from that point? I hear the books are amazing, so I get that It'd be a waste to just pick up from there. I just don't think that I can wait for the new season.

Yes, you probably won't have a f*cking clue what's going on if you do. And the books are amazing.

A Storm Of Swords would be the best place to start as although we are up to events in AFFC in the show there are still things from ASOS that haven't been covered. Plus ASOS is the best book.

I tried reading the first book about a year ago, and I would recommend no one reads them because they're really badly written, if you want to read a book pick up a Phillip Roth or something instead.

No it wouldn't, start from the f*cking beginning!

Alright, cheers. Sure I'll give ASOS a go and see how I get on. As Cina said, it'd probably be too overwhelming to just pick up where it left off considering how much the books cover.

I'm going to read them when the shows finished.

Just caught up with that last one in that series. I could help but burst out laughing at the...
cnut punt

Any reason why?

The books are miles better than the show. It's better to have the show spoiled by the books than vice-versa.

Because that's what I did with Lord of the Rings.

I genuinely wish i had a better reason then that.... but I don't. So there.

How would you know it hasn't ruined the enjoyment if you never experienced it without knowing what was going to happen. The red wedding is easily the best episode for me as it is the only shock that wasn't spoilt for me. Knowing what will happen next really seems to take away a lot from the watching of the show.

I prefer to speculate on what's going to happen in the show. So reading the ****s is a non starter for me, part of the enjoyment is not knowing what the feck will happen and making up these crazy theories that in your head sound brilliant but George being George decides to go in a completely different direction.

Ok to put it better I think the shock element of something like the RW is better in a book. If I was to compare my shock at that in the books with say, something shocking that happens in a certain season of Dexter. I enjoyed the book shock much more. I know it can sound snobbish but there really is nothing better than a book in terms of entertainment because it's what you imagine in your head. You get to hear characters inner thoughts and motivations. It's just so much more rewarding compared to their watered down versions in the TV show. Still great characters but you can only do so much with TV.

I only know of 1 spoiler due to Elliot Roger (yes, the nutter that went on a shooting spree) after someone linked to his YouTube channel and I was scrolling through his comments. As if I needed more reason to hate him

If you wanna lose faith in humanity just read youtube comments.

The good thing for the fans of the show is that they are separating themselves somewhat from the books. I am just curious how much it will be in the long run.

I don't think you can sound snobbish about reading the GOT books, the books never appealed to me they seem the equivalent writing style of hunger games or fifty shades of grey. I'd rather read a well written book and watch my tv for the bewbs.

Now the time has passed ( I hope anyway), what was it that Frankie Boyle tweeted ages ago that ruined it for people who hadn't read the books that we hadn't seen on tv yet? Or are we still not close to the point of what he said? Fortunately I only heard he did this and not what he said.
