Kids dont get paid to listen to iPods, and actually they are Manchester United players, for the time being at least, not kids.

Bebe isn't even 20 and Obertan is what, 21? They're kids regardless of what they do for a living.

They're not kids - they're in a great position that thousands have tried and failed to be in, and yet they're hardly setting the world alight. In fact, they both generally amble around looking pretty clueless on the pitch.

If we get to the Champion's League final, will you be fine with them displaying that lack of regard for a match their team is playing in?

I couldn't give a feck if they wanted to listen to their iPod during a Champions League Final.

No, I think he would have banned them. He hasn't so he probably doesn't see it as an issue either.

Exactly.

So had they looked good when playing, they could be sitting with their iPods when they are out of the team?

Talk about storms in tea cups.

:nods head:

I knew this would be a thread on here since this place has such a fecking hivemind and it was mentioned by the commentators.

Anyway, how do you wankers complaining don't know he wasn't listening to a tape to help him learn English so he can communicate with his teammates better ? Or he could have been getting French commentary on the internet. Infinite amount of possibilities and nobody knows so stop being arseholes.

What he was listening to is irellevant. It could have been Zig and Zag's greatest hits for all I care. All it would mean is they have exceptional taste in music. Nothing else.

Mobile phones might exist now but that hasn't stopped them from being banned in lots of work places - including football dressing rooms.

I suspect they're contractually obliged to be there, and it's for a reason.

They were obliged to be there, they were in the bleeding squad!

If they were in Manchester and someone got injured in the warmup how much use would they be? They have to be there to be drafted onto the bench if required.

Edit: it's also irrelevant whether smart phones were around or not when Giggs or Neville were at that stage - the point is I'm fairly sure they'd have been fixated on the game to learn all they could from those ahead of them. Just because smart phones are around doesn't make that any less a good idea.

Would you like watching football so much if you were immersed in it 24/7 like these lads are? Think of how frustrating it would be to be left out of the side and how you would deal with that disappointment, of course you would be annoyed.

Also this was one still from the game, what's to say the ball wasn't out of play and they looked away for a moment? It only needs an opportunistic cameraman catching the wrong 0.0000000000001 second.

Nope. But it makes them look even more daft if they can't be arsed to put their little phones down and concentrate on what they're actually there for.

Nice try though.

People don't listen to ipods for 0.0000000000001 seconds.

I don't really care if anyone agrees with me - in my opinion they should both have been concentrating more on the game, as Ryan Giggs still manages to despite having watched/played in thousands of them.

And if we got a few views of them looking at their phones during the match, I would have accepted that. We got a 5-second segment at the time the match was probably halted, as that is when directors choose to go to the camera looking to the stands.

It's like when a big player is benched and you see him for five seconds during the match, looking serious. Then you've got people saying he's angry about being dropped. It's nonsense.

I just hope Anders Lindegaard didn't send his twitter message commending Van der Sar during the 90 minutes of the match or he'll be slaughtered for not making sure he misses not one second of Edwin's performance.

Mobile phones and headphones should be banned from players during games - not a good advert from players...understandable fans being pissed off with such attitudes.

Ole was a great example of how to watch, learn and analyse games.

Bang on

I'm not too fussed about the sitting next to Giggs things, that's a red herring. He could bloody well have his full focus on watching the game though

Listening to an iPod is what he is doing wrong?

How can that affect what he takes in from the game?

Sorry, it jars because it's not what we're used to seeing from United players watching from the stands.

If Mrs Charlton can put the effort in, I'd hope Obertan can find it in himself to pay a bit of attention too.

- Ryan, Ryan, do you sink 'e should 'av crossed zat ball?

- Er, maybe Gab

- Wow. Zat is amazing.

...

- Ryan, Ryan, do you sink zat was an elbow by wazza?

- Yeah, looks like he got away with that one Gab

- Oh wow. Zat is amazing!

...

- Ryan, Ryan...

- Er, yes Gab

- That Chicharito looks about twelve, n'est-ce pas? But he is tres bon at ze scoring, non?

- Er, yes Gab. Shut up now.

- Ok Ryan, I switch on ze ipod.

Iinteresting, Obertan was talking to Giggs in a German accent, the plot thickens!

She probably forgot to charge her Nintendo DS. Only possible explanation for her and Bobby not spending the entire game playing Pokemon.

Listening to whatever he's listening, doesn't really prevent him from watching the match. As for the phone, we don't know he's been looking at it regularly during the 90 minutes.

I don't really care what he's listening to or how long he's on his phone for. It's the fact they're doing it at all that I've a slight issue with. I just think that United has been a hallmark for a greater degree of professionalism than that.

Sure, you can point out to each of my posts that it doesn't effect their ability to watch the match. Maybe you're right. I think you're probably not though and it certainly doesn't fit in with the degree of almost maniacal, obsessional professionalism I've observed under SAF's reign.

Id say he more than likely has a problem with jitters and Fergie gave him full permission to use music during games as a way of helping his jitters!! Blanc talked about his psychological wekaness`s! He could run rings around anyone on the pitch but he obviously has some mental block that is halting his progress. Its pure insanity and very begrudging to slate the bloke in anyway over this!

what a load of rubbish. how many of you listen to commentary on your phones etc whilst watching the match?

give the lad a break ffs

We're not employed by Manchester United GB

The very least I expect is a little bit of professionalism. Wearing big feck off headphones while you're at the game watching your side play isn't on for me. How hard is it, just for a couple of hours, just to leave it alone and watch the game same as everyone else?

OK, we all experience things differently, but I just can't see how listening to music while watching football is anything but a distraction.
I can't think of any time that I or anybody I've ever met or heard of listens to music for reasons other than:
a) to help make an otherwise dull experience more endurable - eg a journey
b) as an end to itself, when it is taking up your entire concentraion -eg club or gig.

Neither of those is really appropriate to a football match.

Yes, he could well and hopefully does learn in training, but there are reasons that non-playing squad members are expected to attend the match, and one is that it's a unique environment to observe the team's play and learn from it.

Totally agree with that. It's just unprofessional. He's there to watch his team play, it should not be a chore.

Have to admit if I was a manager and two young players were fecking round with their phones rather than concentrating on the match I'd be far from impressed with them,,,, rocket up the arse would be the order of the day.

Actually, he may be watching the game because he was taken as part of the squad, then left out of the 18. Not all players who are not playing are actually at the match.

Maybe he doesn't like watching football? He clearly doesn't seem to enjoy playing it.

For all we know he could very well hate it.

Yes, he might be there for some reason like that. Nevertheless, he should have his attention on the game. Just shows that he doesn't really care as much as a United player should do, in my opinion.

There's a fairly big jump to be made from the question of whether wearing headphones at a game is unprofessional to the statement that it proves he doesn't care about the club if he's wearing them.

That's why I never said that. I agree with what you said - If I were the manager I'd not be impressed - but for the reasons I said. I'd want every player giving 100% of their attention to the match - because it is their job.

Just shows that he doesn't really care as much as a United player should do

I dont really think it shows anything about how much he cares or doesn't.

Are your eyes trained on the pitch whilst play is stopped?

Yeah. I don't take a phone or radio or MP3 to the game, I don't buy a programme - what else am I supposed to do? I also am not employed by the club and expected to act in a professional way. It just seems incongruous with the way we normally expect our players to act - interested for one thing.
