GAA 2015

There was an extra gear or two left in that Mayo side there today but they just couldn't seem to find it. Dublin looked like they were near enough to being in full flow. After the way it finished Mayo should be heading into the replay with their tails up so my money will be on them finding that extra gear next Saturday and having to much for Dublin.

Anyways, I've a weeks holidays booked off work starting next Thursday and I've 1200 euros that the wife doesn't even know about put aside or hid under the barrel of water outside for what's going to be the mother of all sessions or celebrations for me and all of the rest of the Tribesmen and women this time next Sunday evening. The hairs is standing on the back of my neck here thinking about it. If I'm alive Sunday fortnight I'll be doing well. The wait is nearly over, hard to believe it but she's coming to an end.

Not to sure what part of the country you're from but going by what you've said in this thread so far, I'm delighted you've said that.

Ha! I'm from Galway! Brought up through the era of "small, fast but fragile forwards" and heartbreaking defeats since 1988.. brought up with an abiding hatred of Tipp, which made last weekend great.

Jaysus Dublin were very poor yesterday. Fouling in bad areas and mouthing at the ref causing difficult frees to be made much easier. They looked very afraid of Mayo's power and sat back to try cope with it but when they went at Mayo at pace they made inroads. Cooper and McMahon were very lucky to stay on the pitch. The swinging elbow by O'Connor whilst likely not intentional threw the Dublin defence into a spin and I thought they lacked leadership. When Bastick was black carded I thought Dublin completely lost their way. Connolly was silly to strike out for his red and Flynn and MDMA were both quite poor by their standards. I hope the lads can lift it for Saturday but look leggy.

On a side note the personality transplant of the panel at full time was comical. RTE must've been on saying lads make this sound better. Spillane saying it's septic at half time and then saying what a game at full time. Jaysus lads just tell the truth. It was dire but the last 10 were exciting. Cheering on Galway in the hurling too.

Jaysus Dublin were very poor yesterday.

I find this a bit mad. Only one team tried to play football. Mayo scored 2 points from play in an hour of football. Just think about that. They were ultra defensive and just kept lumping the ball up to 14 st 6 '4" forward. Yes Dublin were very indisciplined at the back after they lost their best hope of countering O Shea in Rory O'Carroll after a few minutes with 10 stitches. If it was O Shea that went off the game would have been over in 15 mins. Yes Dublin were messy and mouthy and worst of all started acting the dick when 7 points up at the end, but only one team tried to play football. The first half was shite, but honestly that was Mayo's plan. An open game was a Dublin victory, that's why the Dublin kickouts were unchallenged to almost halfway. Donegal did it twice and Mayo were smart enough to copy it, but in my opinion that's a race to the bottom and ruins the game as a spectacle.

You are totally right, when Bastick went off it was an amazing capitualtion from Dublin, and we will really miss Connolly.

That's a fair analysis @Stick . Dublin's indiscipline let them down.
To an extent I can understand Connolly losing the run of himself, as he gets all sort of shite every match and as he's such an intense lad probably gets frustrated. He should still be controlling himself better but I guess he's only human. Cooper and McMahon on the other hand...let's just say I hope Brolly singles them out in his next article  No more than thugs in my mind, yeah you need a certain bastardry to win an All Ireland but there is a line and they cross it too often (especially Cooper, incredibly cynical, nasty streak in him).

Tomas was right on the Sunday Game though, McQuillan isn't good enough as a ref. I have no idea how he gets so many Dublin matches and indeed finals again and again (especially after his 'performance' in 2011) . Thank God he isn't eligible to feck up the final now at least

Having said all that, Mayo were awful for 60 minutes, and Dublin's lack of discipline kept them in it despite Dublin being way on top. Connolly is a big loss and Cluxton losing the run of himself is a worrying throwback. Lost his head against Fermanagh too. No idea why mayo took so long to push up on the kickouts

I don't think Dublin are a nasty team, the fouls they committed were stupid and cost them the game, no doubt.

Because the space it would have created would allow Dublin to play football. Donegal did it too. It's not parking the bus as much as taking the key out and fecking it away.

I understand the logic, and they're trying to play intelligently, but in my opinion they should have made the switch a few minutes earlier

Minutes maybe, but their only chance was they way the game panned out. Frustrate Dubliin for as long as possible and stay within touching distance. And to be honest, the O Connor injury, and the Bastick card hellped them hugely.

Aye, O Carroll was a big loss. The bastick one was his own fault though.

On the Dublin penalty, for me that's a black card and a free kick. I can understand him giving a penalty given how close it was and his poor positioning, but surely that's a black card offense.

Yeah, Bastick was to blame but the analysis that it was Dublin that was poor is what got me. Mayo had a plan to frustrate and spoil and they got a bit of luck with that plan working out. They were never ahead from the 5th minute.

The ref was poor both ways. I think the Mayo pen was soft, but Cian O'Sullivan could have been sent packing in the first half.

Mayo were awful for an hour, there's no other word for it. Despite their defensive plan though they still left far too much space in front of their full back line. And McQuillan is just a shite ref.

All that said, I think Mayo will be much better in the next game. Dublin will have to be too. We had some poor wides.

The one by Flynn late in the game was silly. And Cluxton's head was gone taking those frees. Do you start Rock next week?

I think both teams will improve

Mayo's gameplan was in no small part based on a fear of the Dublin attack, yet when they came at us we had no reply. What will they do next week. I'm sure it'll be a better game to watch.

I think with Connolly out Rock has to start. Alan Brogan doesn't have 70 minutes in him. I hope O Connor can play.

Wow. Just watched it on the RTE player. That was the Cluxton horror show. Does not look composed; he was very lucky it was wasn't even worse. Some nasty stuff from Dublin. I don't like Mayo particularly, but only their mothers could love the Dubs, far too much cynical stuff, trying to injure people, pretending to be injured. People saying the first half was a bad match but I found it fascinating. Gaelic is going through an interesting tactical phase. Mayo need to take their chances.

Yep, if you were to 'blame' an individual dub then Cluxton would be high on the list.

Jaysus, and what part of the county are you from? Hurling man and a hatred of Tipp, must be up around the Portumna region? I'll probably know you, I do a lot of travelling and talking to people from around the county.

The days of the small fragile forwards are looking like they're gone now thank god.

I think it's fair to say that football is going through a phase now where it won't be winning over to many new followers. The last few championships hasn't threw up that many what you'd call end to end, full on crackers. This years championship entertainment wise has being nothing but pure tripe. Sad thing to say and nothing left of it only a semi final replay and the final.

Alright if you're into tactics and statistics in a big way or playing footballing manager games but lets be honest the vast majority of GAA supporters aren't. Not many of the neutral GAA fans (majority of the country including myself) that love to sit back on a Sunday, put the feet up and watch the match on the telly will be gone on the shite gaelic football has served up in the last few years.

Hmm, I take your point ... I was never a fan of the super defence stuff, but this match was tactically interesting and the second half was super exciting. Passing skills/movement have improved immensely and they are playing at a sizzling pace on the counter. Like it or not the game is evolving and will never go back to the old ways, methinks.
