GAA 2014

I sat down last year and picked a team from all our players at home & abroad and it was hard to know who to leave out. With them, I have no doubt we'd be winning the Laois SFC.

I'm sure these lads have weighted up the option of winning something decent as against a Laois SFC.

Brilliant to see Alan Brogan back in a Dublin shirt for the first time since 2012.
It was great to see him back alright although Setanta commentators were trying to do their best to get him to retire as they don't think he's up to it at 31! Bloody mental!!

The idea with Marketing is to have people talk about you. The only sponsor mentioned by anyone this weekend on here is Renault again. Pathetic attempt by you to hide your own county's poor start against an average Meath outfit.

I speak for the entire Redcafe community and offer our thoughts to John Heslin, Probably the most gifted Midfielder in the Country, who will be out for a rake of months now with injury.

Semi finals of the club Hurling championship on today

Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow) v Loughgiel Shamrocks (Antrim) in Newry at 3pm

and

Portumna (Galway) v Na Piarsaigh (Limerick) in Thurlas at 5pm

I'm heading to that one, should be a cracker as well.

Tipp beat Clare 4-22 to 3-11 as well last night in the Waterford Crystal Cup. Impressive enough win but a lad wouldn't want to read to much into it either. Davy Fitz was on about how far behind Clare are with preparations this year due to the players being pulled and hauled all ver the county to events and stuff on the back of winning the All-Ireland.

That match was postponed until then because of a delay in the semi-finals. Word is that they didn't adjust the training schedule at all and it's on target for Kilkenny in the first round of the league. Led by a point at half-time.

Oh right, If Galway weren't playing Dublin on the same day I would have tipped over to Ennis to see that Clare, Kilkenny match.

Anyways it's Mt. Leinster Rangers v Portumna in the senior club hurling final on Paddy's day.

Mt. Leinster Rangers or the mountainy goats as Ivan Yeats calls them edged past Loughgiel Shamrocks by a point 0-18 to 2-11.

Portumna got the better of Na Piarsaigh by 4pts, 1-15 to 1-11. Na Piarsaigh put up a fair fight but the class and team work of the Portumna lads was to much for themin the end. Joe Canning scored his more or less usual quota and fired 8 over the bar, one of them his trademark sideline cut from what must have been 30 yards out, some score. He nearly scored a goal from further out again 5 mins later from another sideline cut.

Oh look - Westmeath are live again on the box.

Renault most be licking their lips at the coverage. Good luck to the Lakemen

It's a fair achievement by Mt. Leinster Rangers alright and I wouldn't begrudge them winning it out but they'll need to be seriously on the ball when up against Portumna in the final who are after coming through a grueling Galway championship beating Clarinbridge the AI champions of 2011 and St. Thomas' last years AI champions, a tough Loughrea side and the Munster champions last Saturday. I tipped or backed Portumna the day I saw them get the better of St. Thomas' in the Galway semi-final and I reckon if they head into the final in top gear there'll be no stopping them. They're a classy and very skillful outfit and the chemistry between the players is a joy to watch, they all seem to know where one another is without looking up before they hit the ball. The only thing I'm worried about now is will the Portumna contingent play much of a part with Galway in the national league which is starting next Sunday. I'd like to think with Canning being Galway captain this year that they will.

Happy hurling day everyone. Heading to Cork-Limerick tonight, thinking about Clare-Kilkenny tomorrow.

Same to yourself Feeky, happy hurling day.

I was looking forward to the league this year for a long time now and will be heading into Salthill tomorrow but word has it that Dublin are supposed to be starting 11/12 of the team that took on Cork in the AI semi last year and Galway will be without the Portumna lads due to the club final and there's a shit load of injuries as well, mainly to the St. Thomas's crowd. With the league going to be so competitive this year I reckon Galway will be odds on to get relegated now.

Who knows TBP, there's many a man gone broke trying to predict hurling over the last stretch

Super game at Pairc Ui Rinn, Cork and Limerick drew 17 points apiece, Limerick down to 14 for over half of it. Tipp came back to beat Waterford by 3.

Our fat legged, fat bellied and fat arsed Offaly hurlers open their league account tomorrow in Tullamore against Laois. Should be a cracker! :wenger:

A mighty win for The Tribesmen today. I think it was a case of a few Galway lads getting a rare enough chance out to prove a point coming up against a Dublin outfit that looked like they didn't have a clue what they were at, it was either that or they thought they were in for an easy ride and got an all merciful shock because they lined out what must be nearly their 1st team. Two players that I was really impressed with and delighted that they looked like they were in great form was Iarla Tannion who was a monster ta half back, easily Galway's player of the year in 2012 but went missing altogether last year and Niall Healy who was on fire up in the forwards. If some of the lads that came in and continue to impress in the league like the way they did today Cunningham is going to have a some headache when the Portumna lads and others that are out injured come back.

I had a look at the Clare v Kilkenny match there now too and it was a cracker, Clare did well to edge past them in the end but feck me if Kilkenny can keep in touch like that while missing the likes of, TJ Reid, Mick Rice, Brian Hogan, JJ Delaney, Brian Hogan, Fennelly and Power what in the name of jaysus will they be like when they come back?!

Anyways this weeks results

Allianz Hurling League Roinn 1A 2014 Round 1:

Tipperary 2-13 - 0-16 Waterford

Clare 1-16 : 0-18 Kilkenny

Galway 0-28 : 1-12 Dublin

Roinn 1B 2014 Round 1:

Cork 0-17 : 0-17 Limerick

Offaly 2-14 : 1:19 Laois (That's the job Papi, no harm at all to keep Hamilton and them BIFFO's in their box)

Antrim 1-11 : 0-15 Wexford

edit:

Canning was the water boy today!

Mighty win is how I'd describe it for Clare as well, alright plenty missing for Kilkenny and Clare had a strong team out, but Kilkenny have been training since November and Clare since January. Thought they'd fade away in the second half but they stuck with it, partly thanks to a few smashing cameos. Tots O'Connell will be knocking on the door to start big time now.

If Offaly put as much effort into their performances as they did raging at Ger Loughnane, they might have been able to beat Laois.

Offaly 2-14 : 1:19 Laois (That's the job Papi, no harm at all to keep Hamilton and them BIFFO's in their box)

Outshtanding!!! Offaly scored their goals late so Laois whupped them gud. First win over them in about 10 years and first win in O'Connor park since the 60s, apparently....all with a long injury list. Triffic!

Is Zane Keenan out for the year or just the league?

Gone. Cannot commit. Some at home reckons he just wants to play club hurling. For a county as small as ours, himself and Healy are huge losses.

Big loss. Any time I've seen Laois he was your best player, or close.

I was in O'Connor Park yesterday and Offaly had 2 good goal chances after their two late goals to beat Laois. had they done so, it would have been a huge injustice to Laois. Once Offaly went at Laois with about 5 minutes to go Laois crumbled and were there for the taking. I don't know if it was that they were feeling the pressure and panicked as it was a fairly historic victory or whether there are frailties there that Offaly just didn't expose until the final few minutes. If it is the latter, it is a pity from our point of view that we waited until almost stoppage time to apply any real pressure as we could have got something from the game, despite playing very badly.

For Laois, they can take plenty from this victory. They hurled really well, took some good scores and were really up for the game. They even had some bad wides, so on another day could have been a lot further ahead and had the game really put to bed with 10 minutes to go. That being said, Offaly had some awful wides too, even from frees in good positions, so likewise, on another day, Offaly could have been a closer.

While this was a great win for Laois that leaves them top of the pile of division 1B after round one, I wouldn't get carried away. While they hurled well, Offaly seemed to lack so many of the basic skills. I don't ever remember Offaly being so bad at doing the basics. We couldn't rise the ball. I know the pitch was heavy, but Laois had no problem picking it up at first or second time of asking. Our striking was poor and our decision making was atrocious.

Where do we go from here? Well, it's sad to say that after one game, our season is probably over. We have away trips to Wexford and Cork up next and it's hard to imagine us getting anything out of either of those games, playing like that and going to two counties where we have an awful away record. We have Kilkenny in the first round of the Championship, so barring a bit of a run in the qualifiers, a push at promotion was our only hope of a successful season. And that seems lost now, in the middle of February.

And this was after our footballers put in a pathetic performance against Cavan last weekend. Bring back the 90's quick! Jesus at least whatever happened we could always say we were better than our neighbours. Now Westmeath are better than us in football and Laois can beat us in hurling and have been ahead of us in football for the past decade or more.

At least away from the GAA, I have United to brighten up my weekends! :wenger:

Talented but needs a bit of head transplant although his year in the wilderness last year might focus his mind a bit hopefully.
He was very raw in the championship games a few years back and looked like he would struggle physically at intercounty level but I think he has grown as a player and could be a surprise in the kerry forward line this year. Mind you I would think he would have it easier if gooch was passing to him but maybe the absence of Gooch will make him.

What part of Offaly are you from?

Only reason I'm asking is that I'm a very well known man particularly with the women around the hurling heartland of Banagher and John Troy country Lusmagh. I do be over there a good bit. Considered by many as one of the best full backs St. Rynagh's CS has ever seen as well.

I'm from the north of the county. The football end. Clara to be precise.

I don't know him personally, but I'll send on your regards. We're playing division 3 league against Rhode Sunday. He might even be togged out.

Where you from baz?
