GAA 2014

Now put that into perspective with Canning, he is been heralded around the county as a legend. Give the guy space and let him do his own thing. Everyone wants a piece of him, but unlike Shefflin & Carey he ain't got a senior in his back pocket yet.

I'm not to sure what him been hearlded around the county means here baz but if it's him being appreciated for being an unbelievably talented hurler well then I'd say you could change the around the county bit to the hurling world in general.

Your coming across as if you think we're all going around the place here in Galway roaring and shouting like 12 or 13 year old Messi or Ronaldo fanboi's about how great Canning is and how lucky we are to have him or something when we're not. The only feckin' roaring and shouting going on here is going on over the fences and hedges of neighbouring parishes/clubs. The majority of us mainly the ones that try to steer clear of all the shit appreciate his talent, enjoy watching him in action and will be gutted if he goes through the whole of his career scoring what I'd say must be an average of 9 or 10 points in every match and not manage to win an All-Ireland.

Twenty five and he'll more than likely be picking up his 4th club All-Ireland in a fortnights time, and who knows with the help of god he'll be lifting the McCarthy cup over his head in September and out doing the best speech of all time or singing an even better version of The West's Awake!

Yes - his legacy would have been better - what is your problem with that?- I am saying how he was born in County Meath yet opted to play for Westmeath 100 meters down a road over a tiny river, with a tiny bridge which determines the county boundary . I said this decision cost him 3 All Ireland Medals.

By him doing that (which was talked in every corner of the GGA back in the late 80s when Meath wanted him to play in their centenary year winning team) he never became a legend of the game which he should have done as he was better then Brian Stafford. Brian Stafford who became the blueprint of Full forwards and place kicking. Again look at Teams of the decades & Centenary teams to see where Brian Stafford is acclaimed.

You're trying to mince words here. Google Brian Stafford and then Google Lar Giles. Giles was a better player, yet Stafford has the legacy. Countless players over the generations have excelled and never talked about once their boots have hung up - Jobber McGrath, William Carley, Ger Heavin, Spike Fagan. If you go outside Westmeath look at Declan Browne, Johnny Nevin, Matty Forde. A legacy and greatness in GAA is determined by winning a senior All Ireland. Lar giles to be the best of my knowledge only walked away with an O'Bryne Cup medal and knocking Derry out of the National League when they were AI champions.

In relation to Spike Fagan - born in Mullingar, I'm a good friend of Greg Blaney & Joe Brolly, both would say Spike Fagan was the best Forward in the country in the early 90's. Few will even know who Spike is? If he won his All Ireland like Blaney or Brolly he's be a pundit on RTE.

My point is that it wouldn't have changed how good he was, just how he was perceived. Whereas you seemed to be saying about Canning "he's a good player, but he hasn't won an all-Ireland, so he's not a great player." If you're strictly talking about how someone is perceived historically, then sure. But I'd have little difficulty saying Canning is the best hurler in the country, all-Ireland or none.

Its all relative - Andrew O'Shaughnessey, John Joe Doyle, Ciaran Kirby were all whispered as the best hurler ever to play the game until someone else came along.

Before Joe Canning, Galway worshiped at the alter of Joe Cooney, Ollie Canning & Kevin Broderick, won't be too long until they have another great to admire and take photos of him carrying water.

Joe Canning is better than everyone you just mentioned. Ciaran Casey and Gary Kirby were great, not sure about that Ciaran Kirby chancer though.

Again that is relative to the era.

i do think Renault sponsoring a GAA team was mighty news. Sure look at the amount of people talking about it on here at the time. You're even still going on about it.

without looking to rock the boat - I find your Gaa commentary amusing - but there is a valiant concern with regards what I say about Joe Canning * no one would like it more then to see Galway win an All Ireland in any code then my good self

All this talk of great hurlers and no-one has mentioned John Troy. Now there was a hurler.

John Troy was a very good hurler alright, no doubt about it and I've already given him a mention on this thread.

A week or two ago - Page 4

What part of Offaly are you from?

Only reason I'm asking is that I'm a very well known man particularly with the women around the hurling heartland of Banagher and John Troy country Lusmagh. I do be over there a good bit. Considered by many as one of the best full backs St. Rynagh's CS has ever seen as well.

I don't know how I didn't think of saying this yesterday, came into my head when I was lyeing in the bed last night but I remember back around 99' and the early 2000's from once you passed Dolan's garage on the right outside Ballinasloe on the way to Athlone there was nothing but pictures of Desi Dolan planted onto the sides of 40ft curtain siders in every single field from there right up to the far side of Kinnegad. Harrys of Kinnegad at the time (mighty spot for a bit to ate) even had a shrine dedicated to him which was since taken down by the council out side their front door. Desi Dolan this Desi Dolan that I got sick listening about him. You'd swear the Westmeath crowd never seen a lad that was able to kick a football before or something.

You're still sick we beat u in the qualifiers all those years back.

Yeah well I'm from the hurling part of the county anyways Papi. Fair juice to ye though I wouldn't begrudge Laois a thing.

Very well put together clip this. Some story too in fairness, your man at around 4:45 mins going cracked in the gateway sort of reminds me a small bit of meself.

Dubs looking good against Kildare. Couple of really classy scores towards the end. finished 1-22 to 1-12

Best team in the country by a mile. Last night was the first time I have felt we have been outclassed so far in the League. Still think we are the only team capable of causing Dublin an upset in Leinster but we'd need a lot to go our way on the day to pull it off. If they play to their best in the Championship Dublin are winning another All Ireland, can't see anyone stopping them without luck at all.

Ryan has done a decent job so far and it's nice to see a lot of young lads getting their chances, realistically I'd hope for us to get as far as playing Dublin in Leinster and subsequently reaching an All Ireland quarter final through the qualifiers. Signs there that we could be realistic contenders in a couple of years, maybe even as early as next year.

Good win for Clare v Tipp, 4-15 to 0-20, albeit versus a weakened team.

Had the unfortunate pleasure of taking myself and my two sons to Cusack Park to see Westmeath play Mayo. The atrocious weather that I had at the sigerson seems to be following me to every GAA match this year and Mullingar was no different as it bucketed down.

I decided to encamp at the Dunnes Stores end of Cusack as my youngest wanted to try and catch some of the balls as they were been driven over the bar during the warm up. Thankfully today I had chosen to wear the contacts as I managed to be hit square in the face by a Ger Egan Pile-driver, knocking me to the ground and me ultimately standing back up telling everyone "I'm ok" as the blood came running out of my nose.

The game was sh1t. Mayo went 2-4 to 0-1 up inside 12 mins. To which Westmeath played the best football ever seen by any County team this year to lead 2-8 to 2-7 at HT. There ended the Westmeath Lesson as we got hammered in the second half mostly down by poor kickouts and general chaos in our full back line. Think that is our 4th defeat in the row. We have not won a match since Derry beat us in the League Div2 Final last year. Only positives I take is that 6,600 turned up to see a good game and the great Dessie Dolan played (see below).

In fairness to Kildare ye got behind the defence a few times. With a couple of calmer finishes you would've had 2 goals and that makes it much closer in the final few minutes. McManamon is a great player. Looks like he is really pushing for a start this summer.

Sky Bid For GAA Coverage Looking Increasingly Likely
It is understood that Sky have made a bid for at least two of six broadcasting packages in a reconstructed GAA schedule. Any move into Gaelic games by the British media giants would set off controversy and furious debate similar to when they secured the rights to some Irish soccer internationals in the early 2000s.

According to the Irish Daily Star, the terms of the multi-million euro deals exclude the possibility of games being shown on pay-per-view, which could result in games being shown on free-to-air Sky 1. There is also the possibility of TG4 and Sky broadcasting championship games simultaneously, as Sky look to gain a foothold in the GAA market. UPC’s strength in Ireland is seen as a serious enough threat to Sky that a GAA package would be one way of regaining lost subscribers.

The successful bidders may not become known for another 10 days or so. All-Ireland finals are required by law to be shown on free-to-air TV, so any advances by Sky will not affect the showpiece events. The previous broadcasting deals are believed to have been worth around €10 million to the GAA. The Star have claimed that Croke Park Commercial Director Peter McKenna has suggested that this year’s deal could bring in double that amount to the organisation, though he did not comment on whether Sky had made any official contact.

In any case, the number of televised Championship games is set to rise from last year’s total of 40, but is unlikely to be more than 50, the record for a single year.

Would it be wishful thinking that there would be a stream of the club hurling final? The Irish centre pub has it on but I have a class.
http://www.gofirstrow.eu/watch/247761/1/watch-gaa-aib-club-championships.html

Meanwhile in the league Clare went mental on Waterford, Waterford went 0-2 to 0-0 up and then Clare scored 4-14 without reply. Doubt 26 consecutive points has ever been done in Division 1 before. Eased off something mighty in the second half and only won by 13 in the end. Elsewhere Galway beat Tipp and Dublin beat Kilkenny.

Connolly was unreal today. Unreal. Havent seen many better live performances from a single player.

Just watched the first half of Clare-Waterford back on the TG4 player, that is the single most devastating half of hurling I've ever seen between two teams in the same tier.

Some feckin' jaysus session above in Portumna on Monday night, I'm still not right after it. The days where I could go on a right session, sleep in some hay shed get up as fresh as a daisy at 6 and thumb a lift to work and are long gone now I'm afraid. Reminds me of the time meself and Tom Poland god give him the bed of heaven decided to thumb a lift to Banagher one early one Sunday morning after Mass and have a few scoops in The Shannon hotel before heading up to Corrigans, 2 o'clock that night and not a taxi to be got we decided we'd cut it cross country and cross the fields back home which was around 13 miles away, 4 hours later and covered in shite from trying to jumping drains and stuff we finally saw telephone poles and heard cars driving along a road, not so fecking bad we said we're home, got an awful land when we jumped over the final ditch only to be met with a Welcome to Banagher please keep our town tidy sign though, we were back where we started. Mighty craic all the same!

Fair play to Portumna though and to any of ye that took my advice to put a few quid on them back in early November. What ya call him scored 10 points, damn all shure.....
