GAA 2014

Myself and a few lads I play a bit of junior C soon to be junior B hurling with got a bit of a dart last night in the Galway Astro 7's football (soccer) league when we were waiting for a team called the Caltra Bies 7th player to step onto the pitch for kick-off and discovered it was the mighty two time All-Ireland and All star winning Declan Meehan, we had a fair idea travelling in to Galway in the car that they might be a shower of Gaelic footballers as Caltra is deep in the footballing part of the county but to think Declan Meehan would be one of them didn't come into our heads at all. Built like a tank and fit as feck covering every blade of grass on the pitch there was no stopping him though and a strange but at the same time a nice enough experience going up against him too. We wend 4 nil up and ended up losing 10-6!
It's great craic when you come up against someone of repute. I once marked John O'Leary in a club game years ago now. I was very young and he was winding down. He wasnt a bad outfield player either.

Got the 40Euro ticket for the 4 home football league matches, with the possibility of the odd double header the other day. Good value, with a double header with the Dublin vs Kilkenny hurling match on Saturday just announced.

Added Setanta coverage for Feb and March.

Went down last week for our first pre season junior training and seems our team is getting closer to an average age of 40. No young lads coming through our club for our junior side. Granted were in it for a run around but no players are filtering down to us either. We're going to struggle to get 15 lads out unless we can get a few more decent young lads down. Which leads me to our predicament with black cards. I can understand the need for this new system at inter county and senior level following on from the cynical fouls in the last ten minutes of the all Ireland final but in Junior games when the quality of refs isn't great I can see us struggling to get subs to replace the black carded players. Surely a sin bin for ten minutes would be the better option at our level. What do you junior footballers think?

I couldn't agree with you more. This system heavily favours the stronger counties and clubs.

Yeah I mean if Cavan meet Dublin in an All Ireland quarter final and Cavan pick up a couple of black cards for the wrong individuals their side would suffer hugely but Dublin can put on the likes of Rock, McMenamin or O'Gara up top, Bastick in the middle and Philly Mahon at the back who are game changers in themselves. So effectively the black card matters nowt to a strong side but a side with decent players and a young bench will be screwed.

Bingo. The sin bin was the simpler and much smarter, fairer solution but the GAA in their wisdom chose to feck up and over complicate a rule change that tbf probably wasn't even needed in the first place. The sin bin was tried and tested in the womans game too so why they couldn't have transferred that to the mens game is completely beyond me.

I suppose a lad not acting the bollix might reduce the chances a fair bit of him not getting one of these black cards. No point in complaining about small panels or whatever after trying to pull a fast one abroad on the pitch.

Yeah but the point is that the punishment isn't equal for two teams playing. If there was a sin bin or even just a straight red for cynical challenges then it would effect all teams equally. When you have a situation that small club teams who can only field 15 players and maybe one or two subs which is very common playing a team with a full panel you can't say the black card is an equal punishment for both teams. Even a lot of clubs have a load of shite on the bench that are only there to make up the numbers.

Essentially it's giving the big team 5 free cynical pulls.

Not the fan of the black card either myself. Sin bin would be much better imo. Being subbed off for the match is a bit too much of a punishment for me, especially for the smaller teams who may only have the odd good player.

This whole "Black Card" thing irritates me. Why didnt they decide upon the "Pink Card" or the "Rainbow Card"?

Tough / hardmen of the GAA wouldnt want to get slagged about that eh & would avoid it big time to be honest!

The GAA could also have made the punishable player stand in the corner with his thumb in his mouth with the dunce hat on...

This is a real match report from a football match in KK.

The full report as carried by the Tullogher Rosbercon GAA facebook page:

Junior Football Result - Tullogher Rosbercon 1-9 Muckalee 2-4

The Junior Footballers started the year with a hard fought victory over Muckalee last Sunday in front of an attendance of 2 umpires, 2 linesmens and 5 supporters. Only 13 players arrived in Muckalee so evergreen selector Basil Glennon and past his sell by date selector Owen Kenny togged out and made the match day 15.

Tullogher were in control and cruising and leading by 0-5 to 0-1 shortly before the break when they decided to hit the self destruct button. Johnny Barron who was suffering from exhaustion after a run from centre back to corner back (he never done that for the hurlers) fell over in the corner and took his man down with him. From the resultant free the ball was floating into the Tullogher goalkeepers hands when he was distracted by a Zetor and the ball ended up in the back of the net. At half time there was no sign of the manager so 10 year old Danny Glennon took the reins and made a few tactical changes. Tullogher went 3 points up early in the second half and again looked to be cruising when the replacement goalkeeper was distracted by a John Deere and the ball ended up in the Tullogher net again. Luckily, Conor Hennessey decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and show the "auld" lads how it was done and scored a goal to put Tullogher 3 points up. Tullogher then reverted to a defensive strategy and proceeded to play down the clock by pulling Muckalee men down safe in the knowledge that there are no black cards in hurling counties.

Team: - Mark Malone, James Mullally, Basil Glennon, Patrick Grennan, Anthony Cottrell, John Grennan, Tarek O'Connor, Declan Grennan, Pat Hartley (0-2), Kevin Hennessey (0-2), John Barron, Eoin Ryan, Conor Hennessey (1-4), Ted Cullinane, Owen Kenny (0-1).

Manager - 10 year old Danny Glennon

Sacked Manager - Richie Dollard (picked the team and proceeded to spend the rest of the match on the phone - uninterested by the excitement on the field)

 I bolded the best line. It's 100% like something obnoxious hurling aficionados say. It's not a competition between the two sports lads and football fans are quite able to watch hurling without constantly criticising and comparing it negatively to their own sport.

Anyway, it's a great report other than that.

''he was distracted by a Zetor and the ball ended up in the back of the net''

ffs

I wonder if it was an aul' Zetor Crystal that he spotted!

Good find that Irwin.

Do you follow Hogan Stand or Joe.ie on facebook. If not I would recommend it as they are goldmines for stuff like this.

I agree with your sentiments at Senior and intercounty level but I was being selfish and thinking purely about my level when I posted. I think you play a bit aswell and to be fair the referee is on his own at our level and we have the bare minimum of players with most looking for a kick around. There was never really a cynical element at this level of the game but a late challenge or a loss of the head and a sin binning for a lad to cool down would be welcom and enough punishment because to be honest most of us aren't the fittest and couldn't deal with the extra man running at us. Irwin is right to highlight the inequity in the rule for the bigger clubs and counties. I just don't see it working well.

There was a simple fair tried and tested solution and they overlooked it for this nonsense.
Yeah I agree and it would've made for a better spectackle. Think if a team like Cavan (Keep using them but they're a handy example) are 4 points down to dublin with ten minutes to play and the Dublin forwards start pulling down the Cavan lads. In the case of a sin bin you end up with Cavan having a full complement of players attacking 13 Dublin lads. Really makes for an exciting finish to what could have been a dull end to the game. If you apply the black card rules Dublin get two fresh players on for the players they get black carded, they kill the momentum of the attacking team who still get no advantage for the cynical tackles. It just doesn't work for me.

First female official at a GAA senior mens intercounty match this weekend.

Maggie Farrelly will make history tomorrow night when she becomes the first female to officiate at a men's senior inter-county game in Croke Park.

The Cavan referee will act as fourth official for the Allianz Football League opener between Dublin and Kerry. Meath's David Coldrick will take charge of the glamour fixture, with Liam Devenney (Mayo) and Anthony Nolan (Wicklow) acting as his linesmen.

A member of the Laragh United club, Maggie has been refereeing in the men's game for the past eight years and has run the line in Ulster's McKenna Cup.

"A few days ago I got a message to ask was I available for this game and I just couldn't believe it," Farrelly told GAA.ie.

"I was in complete awe that I was going to be officiating at a Dublin-Kerry game. It's a great honour and something that you can only dream about, especially because the game is in Croke Park of all places. It's such a special place for GAA people."

Only the 4th official but a step in the right direction. Widening the talent pool for refs will hopefully result in some of the brutal incumbents being pushed out.

Brilliant to see Alan Brogan back in a Dublin shirt for the first time since 2012.

A sort of an odd time to announce it though, in the dressing room straight away after the match.

2014 Allianz Football League Division 1 - Round 1

Derry 1-15 : 2-12 Tyrone at Celtic Park

Dublin 2-08 : 1-10 Kerry at Croke Park

In the Hurling Kilkenny got the better of Dublin in the Bord na Móna Walsh Cup winning by 4 points, finished up 0-24 to 1-17. Kilkenny took the lead in the 8th minute and never looked back. Anyone that thought Kilkenny could have been heading into some sort of a barron spell after their performance in the Championship last year might have to have an aul' rethink again I'm afraid. Shefflin put 13 points over the bar against Galway last week, didn't feature at all tonight and up steps Eoin Larkin with 11 points.

Good win tonight for Dublin. Costello looked great, the best of the new lads, Alan Brogan looked poor, but that's understandable. It was a decent game, though it did look like it'd explode into a great game around the 50 minute mark, but unfortunately it died down a wee bit. Being able to throw MacCauley, McCaffrey and Mannion on for the last 20 minutes was great, and won the game in the end.

Watched Derry v Tyrone, good game considering the conditions, draw probably the fairest result.

Kerry and Dublin was a drab enough affair with Dubs coming through it. I think the standard of the top teams is too big for the winner to come anywhere outside Kerry, Dubling or Mayo- Cork at a push.

Yeah Bill Cullen ain't anything to do with Renault anymore guys

I see Cork gave ye a lesson and a half today. By the looks of things whoever is over Renault these days hasn't got a clue either!

Ye should have tried to hold onto Anthony Cunningham the current Galway hurling manager that time when he was manager of Garrycastle. Ye might have had some feckin' chance then, a Leinster final or something maybe.

Allianz Football League Roinn 1 2014 Round 1

Cork 0-18 : 0-10 Westmeath, below in Páirc Uí Rinn

Kildare 2-19 : 2-19 Mayo, down in Newbridge

Allianz Football League Roinn 2 2014 Round 1

Meath 3-18 : 4-11 Galway, down in Pairc Tailteann (Galway are on the up again, lads. I'll give them another year or two and they'll topple Mayo)

Louth 0-16 : 1-13 Armagh, above at Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda

Laois 1-09 : 2-19 Donegal, that took place in Portlaoise, Big Papi's neck of the woods

Down 1-11 : 0-14 Monaghan, they tore into one another above in Newry

And to finish the weekend off here's a clip of Joe Canning and his nephew above in Portumna a few years ago.

Next week again with the help of god lads,

Take her handy.

Renault sponsorship on Westmeath is shambolic, dirty big great yellow lump of shite on maroon. Disastrous. fecking animals.

Yeah, sorry about that kidbob mate. I do be prone to the odd typo on here alright, especially on a Sunday evening.

Renault and Westmeath - birds of a feather Feeky, birds of a feather....

The idea with Marketing is to have people talk about you. The only sponsor mentioned by anyone this weekend on here is Renault again. Pathetic attempt by you to hide your own county's poor start against an average Meath outfit.

I speak for the entire Redcafe community and offer our thoughts to John Heslin, Probably the most gifted Midfielder in the Country, who will be out for a rake of months now with injury.

Again Renault & Westmeath will be delighted with all the attention. You are nothing if you are not talked about

nothing wrong with the Jersey

Next week again with the help of god lads,

Take her handy.

Imagine being a kid and having Joe Canning as an uncle?!?

This is the GAA thread. We don't use "mate" in here!!!

Yeah, Laois took a batin' at the weekend alright, but most people at home are not expecting much more. McNulty came under fierce fire with his tactics but I wonder now, was he playing to our (limited) strengths.

On a side note, our club is on the verge of losing a third player to a big Dublin club....this lad a minor. The big clubs are like Barcelona now, they'll be signing up lads at 11! This on top of the 4/5 lads (all first choice players) who are our for'n.

I sat down last year and picked a team from all our players at home & abroad and it was hard to know who to leave out. With them, I have no doubt we'd be winning the Laois SFC.
