Gaa 2013

Still no sign of STG? That lad must have a hell of a hangover today! Great win and well deserved. Donegal got shown up a bit by that game.

I'm raging too. The triple header in croker next weekend would be class but I can't go because I promised a local hotelier that I would work for the night for her ages ago. :(

Feel your pain bro, I've been to every Clare game so far, missing the Thurles double-header because of a stupid teaching English abroad course.

I'm down to work at 7.30 but the game starts at 7. I assume it's on RTE so there's no way I'm going to work until after the game. Pain in the arse.

My wife's pissed too because she's Cavan and has never got the chance to see them in Croker so this would have been ideal with both side playing.

Well if it's any consolation I've got my tickets for the double header in Thurlas next Sunday and I've have a room booked in Hayes Hotel as well for Saturday night. It could be my last weekend out following The Tribesmen this year so might as well make the best of it. The Galway minors are taking on Laois at 12:15 as well so it'll be some day of Hurling.

Carrick on Shannon? Could they find a smaller shittier ground to play in? Were the 15 acres booked already? For feck sake.

Plus putting our minors on in Thurles with the biggest double header of the year? No tickets there either.

So many other grounds that game could have been in. Clones would have been ideal IMO.

Dr Hyde Park holds 18,000 and is completely neutral, like Carrick. Breffni Park also is big (32,000), is equidistant from Portlaoise and Ballybofey but is in Ulster.

Anyway, I'm not going to change it. Apparently, we're going to Waterford for a few days instead of Mayo so I'm out. Does anyone think Laois have a hope? We're doing a prediction thing in work and I can't work out if my heart is fooling me or not.

Nah. Donegal will bounce back from this but they won't win an all-ireland this year.

Our U10s have a blitz in Clonad and U8s in Ballypickas on Saturday morning. I'm trying to convince the lads to go to their blitzes, head to Thurles and on to Carrick.......but it means leaving the holiday early.

Don't know how I feel about getting Kildare in round 3 and then facing Meath if we were to win. I think it's probably the hardest third round draw possible and only Cork would be a worse round 4 opponent. Cavan got a bum draw getting the mandatory all Ulster tie against Derry.

Predictions in bold.

Round 3
Galway v Armagh
Wexford v Laois
Kildare v Tyrone
Derry v Cavan
(First team drawn has home advantage)
Round 4
Galway/Armagh v Cork
Wexford/Laois v Losers of Donegal/Monaghan
Kildare/Tyrone v Meath
Derry/Cavan v Losers of Mayo/London
(All Round 4 ties to be played at neutral venues)

If that's correct then I see the 1/4's being from;
Kerry
Dublin
Mayo
Donegal
Cork
Monaghan
Tyrone
Derry

Hard to look past the four provincial winners for the semis.

Got a few of these wrong then. In fact Tyrone were the only one I got right. :wenger:

Round 4
Galway v Cork
Laois v Donegal
Tyrone v Meath
Cavan v London

Should be a bit more straightforward this time and great to see Cavan potentially making it into the quarters. A real sleeping giant as I've said before and this great run could awaken them.

Triple header in Croker on Saturday should be epic. Gonna be a dear day in Croker for 7/8 hours!

I reckon they'll price a load of people out of it. I can't see very many taking advantage of the three games and it's way too pricey a ticket for one or two 4th round Q games.

Yeah, and a burger is €5 and chips are €3.50 or something. Rip-off. I doubt many will go for the first match and stay until the end of the last. I was thinking of heading in but not sure if I will, just for a couple of second/third tier teams playing:wenger:

Blow a raspberry.

I was wondering yesterday would you be able to go in, out and back in on the same ticket? If I wanted to leave for a while to go for a bit of lunch would I be able to get back in? 7 hours is too long to sit on a plastic seat in Croker football or not.

Normally it depends on the steward at the exit whether or not you'll be allowed to exit and come back in. If you ask the steward at the exit he might let you go out and let you back in purely by remembering you. Thought since there'll probably be a lot of people wanting to do that, I can't imagine them bothering(unless the GAA have come up with something for this weekend - which is highly doubtful).

So if I was in a position to go, which due to work sadly I'm not, I would have to go in for the Cavan game at 2pm and sit all day till 9pm at night eating oly the tripe in the ground. That's a load of shit TBH and one of the big reasons I don't like a triple header.

Pretty much, unless, as I said, you get a sound steward or the GAA came up with something. Pretty shit alright, but thats the GAA for you. Couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.

1994 All-Ireland Football Final is on All-Ireland Gold on TG4 now. Tough conditions but a good game. Down v Dublin. Mickey Linden v Charlie Redmond. Classic stuff.

That was a great time for Ulster football. The three D's in a row iirc.

Correct, Irwin. Four Ds in a row if you count Dublin in '95, too.

The hurling was far more exciting in that era, though. Mid '90s hurling was absolutely enthralling stuff.

Well the "old Goat is back"......... still celebrating after our fantastic win last Sunday. Monaghan, Ulster Champions....... I like it:drool::D:)

Thanks for all the well-wishes

feck me, three days to get to a keyboards. Must have been some night in the fiddlers.

Well done lad. Thoroughly deserved.

Anthony Cunningham has made a fair few changes on the Galway team to face Clare tomorrow. Slyvie Linnane who was having a crack at him on The Examiner yesterday for not yet having a settled team or a back six and we in July won't be surprised and he was right in away, it's not to good a sign when a lad would probably have a better chance in winning the lotto than trying to predict the Galway team and it's being like that for years now. Anyways Jason Grealish a buddy of mine (was only chatting him up at the centre last night) is getting a well deserved start, when it comes to consistency and form in the club championship he'd be one of the best in the county. Supports Utd as well!

1. Colm Callanan (Kinvara)
2. Kevin Hynes (Sarsfields)
3. Fergal Moore (Ardrahan)
4. Johnny Coen (Loughrea)
5. Shane Kavanagh (Kinvara)
6. David Collins (Liam Mellows)
7. Jason Grealish (Gort)
8. Aiden Harte (Gort)
9. Andy Smith (Portumna)
10. David Burke (St. Thomas's)
11. Conor Cooney (St. Thomas's)
12. Jonathon Glynn (Ardrahan)
13. Damien Hayes (Portumna)
14. Joe Canning (Portumna)
15. Niall Burke (Oranmore-Maree)

The most notable names missing or dropped off that team is Iarlaith Tannion one of the best hurlers in the country last year but who has being pretty shite throughout League campaign and against Laois and Dublin this year. James Skehill in goal for what must be that mistake he made against Dublin. Cyril Donnelan who has being very poor this year and Mullagh's Davy Glennon whom might feel a bit unlucky, plays at corner forward and will run and hound down lads all day but not the best at scoring.

Tough one to call, Davy Fitz will have the Clare lads chomping at the bit that's for sure but if that Galway team clicks and if Joe Canning stays in CF for a change I can see Galway edging it. There's a lot of if's and buts though. Two brilliant teams when it comes to flare and attacking hurling, so it should be a belter as should the Cork and Kilkenny match.

Predictions: Cork and Galway to win.

Cork 1-13 : 0-16 Galway in the Football

4 mins to go, I'm listening to it on the radio here and it sounds like a mighty match...

edit: All over...

Cork 1-16 : 1:17 Galway

While I'm sure the Galway footballers will be sickened now by the sounds of things they can hold their heads up high. I didn't see it but apparently Meehan scored a goal with 7 or 8 lads on the line. Anyways hopefully they'll build on today now, they're a young team and they'll be back mixing it with the big guns again in a year or two.

Dublin v Cork
Kerry v Cavan
Mayo v Donegal
Monaghan v Tyrone

Iirc, Leinster play Munster and Ulster play Connacht, giving, in my opinion, a semi final line up of:

Dublin v Kerry
Tyrone v Mayo.

I haven't watched the game from last night yet but delighted with the win. By all accounts it was touch and go at the end but I think it was expected. Going to have a look if it's on the Player and watch it now. I reckon Cavan got the best draw available to them which is a strange thing to say about drawing Kerry and I'm happy enough my Tyrone have avoided Mayo and Dublin but Monaghan will be a tough test for sure.

Glad I gave you a laugh, mosey old boy.

Canning very off form this year. He missed about 6/7 points against Dublin, was poor enough again today. Clare v Limerick and Cork v Dublin. Dublin, coming off a 5-week break will find it difficult to take this Cork team. JBM worked a semi-miracle in '99 and he's heading that way again. Clare v Limerick is very difficult to predict.

In the football, I see Kerry, Dublin and Mayo winning. Tyrone v Monaghan is a doozy to call and it's a pity that they're meeting at this stage.

I can't argue with your football predictions BP but I see all of them as being games that could potentially be tight enough. If I was matching teams up for potential tight games they are the fixtures I would have picked. I'd love to see Tyrone, Mayo, Cavan and Dublin going through with Tyrone facing Cavan in the Semi. Would be a great day out for the IWTK family.

If Cavanagh had not scored that point that secured the 2-pt win, I'd be winning the prediction comp in work by all of 9pts! Instead, I'm 60 pts down.

I think Cavan are the weakest of the bunch. They last reached a semifinal in 1997, where they were beaten by Kerry, haven't won it since 1952. In recent years, their Qualifier performances have been abject - losing to shit teams or getting hammered by respectable teams. I predicted them to win all their matches so far this year, but will not be doing so next weekend.

I think Donegal are struggling. Laois were back to two having let them drift ahead and a couple of missed chances could have levelled us up yesterday. Mayo are an unknown as they have faced no-one substantial but they won't be short of motivation after last year's final. It will be a battle of weary, battle-hardened Donegal and fresh, untested Mayo.

Cork struggled over Galway, who I didn't rate too much. I think Galway will improve over the next year or so and will be back in the semis but this year, they were weak. Cork were poor in Munster and although they won a 'lucky' All Ireland in 2010, they never drove on from that. I can see Dublin walloping them in front of a big crowd in Croker.

Tyrone and Monaghan is the hardest to call. Tyrone kind of look like their old selves again. Monaghan surprised most people with thpowerful display against Donegal. STG, did Monaghan celebrate this win or was it a case of being a step towards Sam. I know Westmeath went doolally in 2004 and week's later, they were still celebrating it. This is definitely the match of the weekend. I love Tyrone's mixture of brawn and brain, coupled with the heartaches incurred by the teams, going back to McGirr in 1997. I've seen them as a mouthy team, they just get on with it. I'd love to see them win one more before the core of the team is gone. I just cannot call this yet - I may put down a draw.
