Gaa 2013

We had the small matter of Brits to contend with since 1920 where-as the free-staters could skip and play in a carefree manner ever since.

Also, Cavan were a phenomenon up to the 60's. Take that record out and the 3 are very short of numbers.

Not to mention Gaa clubs & its members being targeted by loyalist death-squads & security forces on a daily basis. Not great preparations to compete at any level, which only makes Crossmaglen's achievements all the more incredible - given that area of South Armagh was like something out of the Vietnam war...

As regards to Big Papi, i've heard it all now for feck sake

I dont know why you felt the need to bring that stat up - "Southern Ulster County teams are more successful than Northern County teams" etc?!

Seems like you're tryin to create partition within a partition. Ulster is at one with each other & always has been, i'm sure there's better things to google than that, & which is of more interest to the good people of Ulster!

Long time no hear!....... our paths haven't crossed in a while!.. Are you going to game today?

Im off around 9am from my Galway base, staying over till tomorrow. Very hard to call it, but hopefully the ULSTER CHAMPIONS:D (all 9 ahemm!) will prevail & we end this hoodoo...I smell blood....
Anyway, I WILL be supporting the winner in the remainder of the Chmpsp.

ps; some excellent points raised yourself & IwtK.

I'll google whatever I want to google. I thought it was interesting, that's all. I did consider the partionist nature of the stat but feck it, it's only a stat.....and a close one at that. I'm not interested in interesting Ulster people per se.

Aside from that, this is the first video of Cork v KK 2013 I've found. I was looking for the replay of the double-penalty save, which starts around 2:50. Tommy Walsh's run for the cancelled peno was like Mick Lyon's in 1991.

I thought Cody's first comments sounded like a man departing. Hopefully, if that management team goes, Mick Dempsey might bring some of that magic back to Laois.

CNN's sporting events you have to see live 2012:
2. All-Ireland Hurling Final, Dublin, Ireland

hurling-final-simon-brutya.jpg
Think of it as: The Super Bowl of hurling.
Each September, 81,000 people pack into Dublin’s Croke Park to cheer on participants in the culminating match of a provincial hurling championship series between the best teams in Ireland.
It's one of the biggest sporting events in the country, with a history of gambling that "dates back to antiquity."
Don’t worry if you don’t know what’s going on. You'll figure out all you need to know about the fastest and oldest field game in the world and the pursuit of the trophy -- the magnificently named Liam McCarthy Cup -- from the cheering and anguish of fans.
Many in attendance roll in on a wave of Guinness and poteen from the Irish provinces with strong attachments to competing teams -- meaning you just might find the "real Ireland" without leaving the bleachers.
Two or three onlookers have been known to gather in local pubs after the match to drown their sorrows or celebrate their wins.
All-Ireland Hurling Final, Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland; September 9, 2012;

It's a bit fecking twee, but the placing at #2 is great. I'm trying to place the picture....if its a final, it could be 1991.

Can't wait for these games now, being sat over here in Sydney I don't get to see many of the games live, recorded jobs only unfortunately, but am already set up for it today, beers in the fridge, the missus gone home for a few weeks and ready to watch all night - very excited.

So come on then lads, get the predictions out!

Monaghan v Tyrone - backing Tyrone here. I just get the impression that the tighter pitch v Donegal suited Monaghan and that the bigger pitch in HQ will suit Tyrone better. Experience comes into it too, which Tyrone have in spades. Expecting a tough game, hard hits, debate over dangerous tackling and an all round good game of football. Wee nibble at Penrose first goal scorer.

Dublin v Cork - Dubs by a few I think. Expect high scoring game as there are some good quality forwards on both sides. Hoping for an open game and hopefully tight, but reckon Dublin will have too much. Backing Brogan first goal scorer - fancy him to kick on for the business end of the championship now.

Kerry v Cavan - Kerry at a canter. Again, experience is key here. Cavan have had a good year and will still think they should have beaten Monaghan, but this is end of the road for them. Kerry will remain under the radar going into a semi against Dublin, which is exactly where they'll want to be.

Mayo v Donegal - heart says Mayo, head says draw. Too close to call this one, both teams have a few question marks over them going into the game. The winner of this will likely answer a lot of those questions though and will be hard to stop in the semis. The margins at this level are so fine though, I get the impression that they could play this fixture over a series of 3 or 4 games and there'd be feck all in it at the end. Would seriously love to hear McGuinness and Gallagher scrambling for excuses after the game after all the shite talk this week, they've lost a lot of respect in my eyes these last couple of weeks.

What a weekend of football though, pity it's not a bank holiday weekend in Australia!

How's Australia going, GM? Much work over there?

P.S Great write-up, by the way. I'll make a few comments of my own later when I get a chance.

Australia is alright mate, it's been a mental couple of months since the start of the Lions tour, we've had a few visitors stay on since then so it's been a great time. We don't typically hang out with the Irish crowd over here too much as there's not many about in the part of the city we live in, so having a few over from home has been good.

Work is harder to come by now, they started enforcing visa requirements more strictly since 1 July, but that might all change again after the election in September. There's a real feeling over here that it's very similar to Ireland pre-collapse with the way people throw money around - we'll ride it out and enjoy it for a while but will move home before the shit hits the fan properly, home will always be home.

The dollar needs to stop collapsing though, I've lost 20% of my savings in the last 3 months as the dollar collapses against the euro!

It sounds selfish, man, but you're right. Ride the hole off it out there and get out before the shit hits the fan. Ireland might be in better shape by the time that day comes. I've about 30 friends out there at the moment from back home, and to be honest, the majority of them are sick of it now. Long working hours, average money compared to the cost of living, so far away from home - it's not easy. One of my best pals is coming home in September as he's sick of not making money ("I'm only working to live" is what he said basically) yet another got his visa extended for a further couple of years. It's all down to personal preference I suppose. Our club back home has been hit hard enough with emigration now. We won our divisional title three years ago and have lost five of the starting 15 to Australia. It's tough going.

Don't tell me about that bastarding Euro, man. I was singing over twelve months ago sending back money to pay off a loan. €500 was only costing me circa. £350. Now it's almost level par. Disgusting.

Alright my man, whats the craic my fellow Ulster brethren? :D

Yeah our paths havent crossed in a long time alright - hope you're in good health & all man?!

I've generally been summer-muppeting in the transfer thread etc. Dont know why i havent been in & around this thread to be honest, i've only started to get back on the Caf the past few months or so, gave it a break for a bit, so that has to do with it i guess.

Nah, not goin to the match man, i'm up in Red Hand County at the minute (long story), so i'm just gonna take it easy up here...

Tough one to call is right, didnt expect the Farney Boys to beat our cousins (MASSIVE CONGRATS ON THAT ONE TOO), so thats made everyone stand up & take notice - especially our lot. As you i know i've a soft spot for the Mushroom / Big Tom County so i'll be supporting the winner of today onwards & of course i'll be hopin Donegal prevail aswell.

Best of luck today dude - may the best team win & have a great weekend more importantly (hopefully drowning your sorrows) :)

I'm off in to Waxie O'Connor's in town in a bit to get settled in for this evening's matches. I've come to my senses and decided that Cork and Monaghan are going to win and I've had a tenner on it at 8/1 to pay for my Guinness for the evening.

Hup ourra tha', ya pup ya!

Fair play to the optimist.

Sounds like a good plan man, apart from backin Monaghan though - hope that part of your bet goes tits up, for my sake & your arses sake in the morning - £90 on Guinness will not end well mucker

Great start by Monaghan.

Never a yellow on Kavanagh.

Kavanagh having some game.

Good game, will be interesting to see if anything done re the half time shenanigans.

Some good skill shown in difficult conditions, lots of good scores there. It is difficult kicking into an empty hill though, the canal end is the scoring end in croker, game not over yet.

Tyrone tramps. Two red cards at half-time there.

Get to feck. Did you see that monaghan cnut smiling coming off thinking he got a man sent off. Open your eyes man.

I'd rather Duffy than this clown, but at least Tyrone managed to shut Spillane et all up there. The Rte panel were bulling that they couldn't criticise us.

Referee bottling it. Sean Kavanagh should have been sent off. Terrible decision.

If that's not a red card the sport is dead

For what?

that was some hit on the number 7, having a great game he is.
