Just like to spare a thought for Clare hurling legend Ger Loughnane who has been diagnosed with leukemia. Hope he makes a full recovery.
Jaysus, just heard about this. Shocking stuff, loved the Clare hurlers growing up, real men. He'd always have them wound up something fierce, some great tidbits about his management in 'Hurling: The Revolution Years'. I used to have a VHS called 'The Banner Raised' about Clare's win in '95, still remember Ger at half-time - "we're going to do it". Hope he beats it, what's the prognosis, or is there any yet?
Whilst I'm in here, I was at Kerry-Cork on Sunday, not mad keen on gaelic football but I'm from Cork and the ol' man is from Kerry so we went along to it. Standard actually wasn't great for the two best teams in the country. Should've been about 10 minutes of added time, he played 5 and then another 45 seconds to allow for a 2 and a half minute stoppage in injury time.
Not playing proper additional time is a serious gripe of mine about the GAA, it's obvious the referees don't bother to add up the individual incidents and instead nearly always just throw on the standard 2 minutes, 3 at a push, or if it's anything more still about half of what it should be.
It was ridiculous in Dublin-Kildare, several injuries, about 8 subs, time-wasting from Dublin, and we still got the standard 2 minutes. I understand there was a similar story in Cork-Offaly, and only 1 minute added. I've been on about it for years, drives me bonkers.
