Gaa 2010

Well folks it's not all doom & gloom!....... Up the FARNEY boys!;)

Firstly, condolences to my fellow Derry / Tyrone Utd. fans, twas a very harsh way to get relegated.

In fact, the league is more important to us(Monaghan) than either Tyrone or Derry, simply because we have not been in it often in recent times.

The championship will be a different proposition, however I have a "gut" feeling this could be our year in Ulster!

ps; If you think the way ye were relegated was bad, it was WORSE for us in the nineties! Then the NFL conprised of D1, D2, & two division 3's (3a & 3b).

Picture this situation going into the last series of games....

Monaghan were in D2, in second place, 1 pt ahead of 4 tied teams & 2 pts ahead of 2nd last team Down. In the last series of games, if Monaghan(at home) bt Down (maybe even a draw would do) they would be promoted to D1.

Then the outcome......

Down hammered the favs. Monaghan.
Amazingly the other results, (including 2 of the teams just 1 pt behind us drew with each other). The other 2 teams on a pt behind us, both beat the top & bottom teams respectively.
Due to the enormity of the Down hammering ( 10+pts), Monaghan got relegated on pts difference!......... so maybe we deserve a little break!

Congrats my friend, dont feel sorry for us, Derry that is, we deserved our fate and have no complaints. We take our leave along with our fellow strugglers Tyrone

Yeah that seems to be the picture alright NC. Many teams are trying to use the League to gain fitness & cohesion within the squad, so i wouldnt use the League campaign as a yard stick to measure where the top Counties are gonna finish at the end of the Championship - Provincial & All-Ireland!

Congrats on a good performance yesterday & bad luck not making the final. Best of luck for the rest of the season mate

Cheers.

Same to you.

Derry deserved to go down. That's what they get for snubbing the county champions.

Christ Hackett is supposed to be gone....I'll have to convene a meeting of the Westmeath Belfast Supporters Club and fomally give a response tomorrow.

I read his interview in the Tribune 3 weeks ago and felt bad. He seemed to have a strategy and in fairness I looked at what he said and thought - He say alot of truths. He did get us to the Leinster U-21. The Seniors do need a complete rehaul. The league was always going to be tough and we did play well against Meath & Kildare. He illustated how he was ahead of the game in the 80's and maybe could be proved right

Best of luck to the man. I thank him for what he did anyway. I think Dolan snr should now get it. Let him have his say and get on with it

Good to hear from ya Baz. Sorry to hear about West Meaths recent plight & I was charmed with what you said about Hackett. Hope the EGM goes well & we all await the press conference!

No Loup men PJ, hadnt noticed that, to be truthful they are better out of that present Derry set up

Probably not a bad suggestion PJ. Derry has a crazy tribalism aspect to the County football team. Tyrone had that shite for God-knows how many years. I think you need a manager that completely commands respect. I dont know waht the County Board are thinkin about in not gettin Liam Bradley in. That man is feckin awesome!

The job he's done with Antrim is not a case of upping the scalps they've had, its the instilled "never-die / lets take them" attitude that is overriding. He's mentally passionate about Gaelic Football & no-one walks over that man. One tough logical-thinking muthafecker. You's need that!

Your problem lies with the board. They're a bunch of self-centered shower of cnuts & gettin rid of them - in an Al Pacino sense of the phrase, is the only way to go about your business!

As Metallica said - "Kill em all"

Philip McGuinness, R I P

Very sad..... an accidental collision of his head with an opponent's knee, playing a club match in Leitrim, resulted in Philip passing away in hospital yeterday, surrounded by family.

Condolences to his family, friends, team mates & the other poor lad involved in the collision.

Awful accident and so freaky, condolences to all concerned

I had a very similar incident to Philly about ten years ago. A knee to the face resulted in a fractured cheekbone and eye socket. An inch to the left and I could have suffered the same fate. A truly devastating turn of events. RIP to the young lad and condolences to his friends and family.

Just shows "it's a fine line"..... glad you're with us CZ !

Ok folks, the premiership is nearly over, & thank God we have the GAA Championships ( already started, Galway bt New York, yesterday) to keep us sane or even unsane during the summer!

Prediction time so!

Football;

Ulster...... Monaghan ( who else would I pick! seriously though I really do fancy us this year, we seem to be on a lower profile this year. IF we can bt the winners of Derry/Armagh in the 1st rd., it will give us serious momentum!).

Leinster..... Dubs ( hard to see anybody stop them, Meath & Kildare closest.).

Connacht.....Galway (improving under Big Joe with every outing. Mayo as they often do, seem to have themselves rated as favs, then usually they fall. Sligo could spring a surprise or two).

Munster... Cork (probably a toss of a coin between the big 2. Good to see Waterford, Tipp & Limerick improving, but will not move the big boy's just yet).

Sam Maguire.... Cork ( it's now or never for them).

Darkhorses; Down, Monaghan & Galway.

HURLING:

Leinster.... Galway ( only team able to dislodge cats. Improving rapidly.

Munster....Tipp ( Cork took a step backwards yesterday v Galway. Clare might just come close.)

Ulster.. Antrim

All Ireland... Galway (can just about squeeze out Cats. Tip probably 3rd best.).

Dark Horses; Wexford.

Yeah cant beat the Championship kicking in after the Prem STG. Fair enough with your predictions man, although I see you've written Tyrone off -we'll see ya mushroom loving thesbien :D

It really is great to be Irish at the start of the summer. I mean What do the English watch when we have the championship?? Cricket........

I know they have the world cup this year, but at least in ireland one county ill be happy come september. In England no-one will win!!!

Well said man. I couldnt live anywhere else tbh. We have the best of all worlds living here. Our National sports give us something to feel patriotic about our County's - unless you're a Derry fan tho, those lads row with themselves instead of the opposition :smirk:

Where you from again son?

That is except you are a Derry fan, we have as much to look forward to as the English, and RHD I agree with most of STG's predictions especially Monaghan for Ulster and Cork for Sam. Derry and Tyrone for early holidays

Same as yourself RHD.

Im gonna stick my neck out a bloody mile here and say Sligo for connaught. The was they dismantled Antrim in the Div3 final was very impressive, and the pace of their forward and half forward llines are terrifying!!

No way would I write Tyrone off, nor Kerry either! one of them could well win Sam!.... and I d'ont think you could classify both in "Darkhorse" territory, due to recent success'.
I think Tyrone & Kerry will possibly be coming through the qualifier route( if following my Provincial predictions). If Tyrone avoid an early round "sucker-punch", they will gain serious momentum!

Thats the key to it though with the championship, and its also what makes it impossible to pick a winner with anything other than pure guesswork at this time of the year. Momentum and peaking in September are all that matters. Look at Dublin every year recently. Looking class in Leinster is like premature ejaculation....

I think i'd be more worried aboout Tyrone if they won the League and were beating all in front of them at this stage because they would have peaked to early. Now that Tyrone have Cavanagh, O'Neill and Dooher back and flying we'll be a different animal.

So no big surprises yesterday as the road to Sam got properly underway. Kerry looked ordinary enough for long periods, but it was predictable the way that they blew Tip away in the last 20 mins. Over excited refereing saw Derry lose out to Armagh yesterday and as expected Wiclow hammered Carlow.

Derry were not bad yesterday they were awful and alot of my fears were realised. Our panel is a disgrace full of players who look like they are going through the motions. It was obvious last week that the management had lost the dressing room when a punch up resulted in one of our players required stitches to his eye, both players started yesterday, both should have been sitting at home IMHO. There is no end in sight to Derrys slippery slope especially with the present squad and management, the first quality team we meet in the qualifiers will thankfully put us out of our misery

Kerry's positioning and passing in the second half was sensational.

The only thing that we can safely say after yesterday is that Ulster football is dead and gone... Thanks for a decade of boring bland dross. I hope we don't see another Ulster team come close to winning anothe AI for at least 30 years

That's probably wishful thinking Baz. Tyrone are more than capable of winning another All Ireland this year. The 14-0-0 formation and 70 minutes of fouling has mileage in it yet unfortunately.

Careful there Baz you could actually leave me with no choice but to shout for Tyrone before the year is out. What have us Ulstermen done on you

Ulster football is dead and gone?? A brave statement with Tyrone, Monaghan and Donegal still to show yet in the championship.

If you would watch a bit more football instead of listening to Spillane rabbiting on you would know that Tyrone or Monaghan (my 2 favourites to do well from Ulster) dont play 'blanket defence' anymore. In fact, your more likely to see that from a second rate Leinster team now. The fact is that Tyrone havn't played that kind of defensive game since 2004.
And as for 70mins of fouling, I suggest you atch the semi-final between cork and Tyrone last year and see which County was commiting the cynical fouls all through the game.

Seriously lads. Quit with the stereotypes and actually watch a game or two. If you want dirty play and balnket defence go and watch your local club play!!!!

Cannot believe someone would type such utter shite.....

I'm very much part of the GAA set up in Belfast. I'll be taking my kids to see Antrim on Sunday. The last good game I have seen played by a team from the North was when my TV black & white.

Like Dublin!

Its sad to see a team with such great attacking talents and traditions as dublin resort to a style of play that they dont have the players for. Dropping an extra man permenantly into the half back line will never suit them.

Tyrone vs Down. Ulster final 2003. The first drawn game was brilliant.
2 totally contrasting styles going hammer and tongs at each other with a scoreline of 1-17 to 4-08. If you cant enjoy that then your looking at the wrong sport.
