Future planning - Replacing Carrick

I have faith in Blind for the short term, I don't think it's realistically possible to purchase a better passer of the ball this summer.

Despite what people believe, at full fitness and used correctly, we have the best midfield in the league.

Longterm - Teilmans, Oxford, Neves, Perriera - whoever develops the most.
 
I really want Kroos, and hasn't he been a bit out of favor at Real this season? Could be gettable.

Verratti would be the ideal replacement, that is if he was actually a realistic target. PSG will most likely never sell him.
 
Thiago or veratti would be the if i could just throw money at it to fix it answer. but more gettable ones? Gundogan, while not like for like in carricks style i think is gettable and accomplishes the same role.

Javi martinez at bayern? hows he doing?

Isn't he pretty much a centre back nowadays? I also doubt he would be interested in joining.
 
Those kind of players are in very high demand at the top clubs, essential both in possession and to lanch quick counter attacks. Basically every major club is in the market for them.

Barca is still looking for a Xavi replacement. Real would like an alternative to Kroos and Modric with more defensive nous. City has no such player and Guardiola could use 2 or 3 of them. Bayern, United and PSG are already looking for replacements for the ageing Alonso, Carrick and Motta...

The big clubs would be suicidal to sell the top players they already have and for reinforcements you will have to bet on the right youngsters with prices likely going crazy for Ruben Neves, Tielemans, Weigl or whatever wonderkid.
 
Gundogan is the best replacement for Carrick we can get.

We have Kimmich, we are fine. :D I wouldn't mind Gündogan to play tutor just as Alonso does right now, though.

Most certainly not. You should if you can get a tape of him schooling the German midfield at the last Euro Under 21 championship whilst playing for Portugal as an example of what he is capable of. The Kimmich's couldn't live with the guy

I'm not sure that we are going to get a like for like replacement as such, but what we do need to do is make sure that whoever we bring in is world class. We've got some good midfielders at the moment, but none of them are top class, imo. No point spending another 30m on 'good', what we need is quality. Someone like Kroos would be my choice (maybe unrealistic but you never know with Real).

different qualities - but I think carricks passing is better than keanes was and that he is probably a little more suited to a possession based game... Keane on the other hand was perfect for a counter attack set up as he was great at winning back the ball and breaking forwards

We dominated possession an awful lot with Keane at the center of it all tbf to Keane.

Is Mascherano as good as Xavi? Different players aint they.

What matters is Carrick was central to the best run this club has ever had domestically and in Europe.
 
Gundogan, Xhaka, or Jorginho. They may only 20 years old but Weigl and Rabiot look like being very good players.

We're unlikely to find a like-for-like replacement, but with one of the above, plus Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Herrera, we'd have most of the skills/ability needed (at least in the short-term) to compensate for Carrick's eventual departure.
 
Blind has the potential to play there, with passing ability to match as well. If not, then I'd like to see Perreira in there next to schneiderlin. If we buy, it has to be Gundogan or Verratti.

Jorginho is a good shout, closest Carrick like player I can think off
 
How is Sean Goss doing? totally forgot about him.

He is in the right age to be playing competitive games. Are we gonna do a Pogba 2.0 on him?

Those players are the best options, but Gundogan is the only realistic. Unfortunately, if we don't play Champions League next season I cannot see us signing a world class midfielder.
For now, I think players like Renato Sanches, Tielemans, Neves and Bazoer are the most realistic options.

I'm afraid you are probably right, one year out of the CL is a blip but a second year in three is not. Plus the fact of us being quite shit on live TV every other week wont help either. This is why the next manager needs to be a serial winner like Jose otherwise we wont be attracting anyone decent despite our no doubt fairly large transfer kitty.

The players you have mentioned obviously Sanchez has been the strongest link but will Ed see these players as marquee enough and will they help us immediately get back to towards the top or are we going through another transitional period.
 
There aren't many marquee CM's in the game, that's more of an attackers domain, and while I think all the young players listed above have potential, this side does not need more potential at a huge price from inferior leagues IMO.
I'd love us to get Gundogan but missing out on the CL again will put the nail in the coffin of that possibility even before Barca and Real start sniffing.

Leon Goretzka and Granit Xhaka would be good options though, although City are supposedly after the latter.

True not marquee as in a Neymar, Muller, Bale etc but as you say Gundogan, I think he would fall into a top draw CM list along with Verratti, Pogba etc. I do like Xhaka a lot but not seen enough of this Goretzka to be honest.
I also feel we need to get proven players in now and not just emphasize on future potential but the crapper we get our appeal surely suffers.

Those are definitely the top bracket CM's, I'm just not sure it's a role the marketing side of things cares about no matter who they are, Pogba maybe due to his dynamic style and marketable look. It's going to be difficult this summer and I think it's a bit of a last chance saloon as far as the transfer market goes when it comes to quality as another bad season without making the top 4 would see things go from a blip to a pattern in the eyes of many potential targets IMO, we have to be shrewd and use the money wisely on this squad in the summer, the Carrick replacement being crucial.

Don't think he's quite in the same bracket, will do well to play over 100 games in the Prem for any club IMO.

In terms of the replacement for Carrick, it's difficult to say. On one hand you have posters that claim we should of made the move for Gundogan (who has returned really well and looks top class again) however that is easy to say in hindsight, when you need someone to go straight into the most demanding position and make an impression in a new league, gambling on someone who has spent a lengthy time out with a major troublesome injury and who struggled to find form in the first 6 months on his return would be very risky.

Likewise with the youngsters mentioned like Neves, Weigl, Tielemans, Bazoer etc. They are the best youngsters for their positions in Europe and now need to make the step up to a big club (maybe not so much in Weigl' case) but none of these players have performed near the level Depay performed at PSV and yet he has struggled massively. Both situations are risky but it's clear something has to chance, there's no definite guarantee on players but hopefully we can choose someone who will slot in seamlessly.
 
Adapting, like we did when Keane left. We didnt replace him, we adapted in a way with Carrick being different but taking his place.

Morgan is different but can work with Herrera imo

It needn't be a like for like replacement but none of the CM's we have right now can dictate a game with their passing, we will need to add that kind of player whether he is an AM or a DM.

Not going to disagree with this and that will probably be needed for European games long term.

As he says, the trick is to change not replace. Schneiderlin can't dictate a game with his passing, but he dominates defensively in a way Carrick doesn't, and meanwhile Herrera definitely can run a game, albeit from higher up the pitch. So between them they provide everything you need from a midfield, without either of them actually being a Carrick replacement.

In the long term, you'd struggle to find a young player more like Carrick in style than Sean Goss, and he seems to be one of the kids Van Gaal has taken a shine to, so worth keeping an eye out for him.
