Future planning - Replacing Carrick

I've been on hundreds of youtube scout videos and the only Carrick type player I can see or want would be Ruben Neves and Weigl at Dortmund. Haven't seen any other young defensive midfielders that come close to their potential.

If anyone has any better suggestions let me know.

Problem with him is, he isn't even first choice at the moment.

The more I see the more I am convinced Cyprien is the best choice we could make.

What a find. Hes not comparable to Carrick tho as hes clearly an attacking midfielder but what a shot hes got.

He likes to get forward and his best position is probably as a box-to-box player, but he can definitely play as the deepest midfielder and control the game, especially with Herrera dropping deeper when he gets forward. Not sure what your definition of an attacking midfielder is, but he's not a #10.

Every time this is bumbed a little piece of me thinks joyfully for a millisecond that we've signed Kroos or Veratti

I think you'd get a separate thread, if that were to happen.

I like Javi Martinez. Not too sure if he can stay fit, I heard he's an injury prone. But we are talking about Jose who can pull a miracle on Phil Jones.

When I watched him in 2013/2014 and his Bilbao days, he was class. He can defend and can pass the ball. He reminds me of Matic but better passer.

He's a good player, but he turns 29 later this year and, when not injured, he's spent most of the last 4 years playing as a centre-back. I don't think he's the one.

I thought he played as a centre back under Pep only? 28 or 29 will do fine. That's pretty much 4 years before a midfielder passed his prime. After that we can search another one. I don't see why do we need to search a young defensive mid or mid 20s to replace Carrick.

Do we really need to replace Carrick like for like. We didn't replace Keano like for like and switched styles to having a steady hand shielding the back four instead (Carrick).
Most fans weren't particularly pleased when we did as it left us less combative in midfield and more passive. A Carrick style player invites teams further up the pitch as that's where you've effectively set your first serious line of defence.
Kante for Chelsea doesn't really sit in the same position as Carrick, he's much more mobile and moves the press further up.

I don't think Jose wants a DLP type of DM, so there's no point talking about Weigl and the likes, just sign Franck Kessie and be done with it. I don't think there's a better young DM right now.

Well herrera and fellaini can both play the position to varying degrees so it might be a squad numbers replacement rather than a like for like player. Franck kessies talking up a move to united at the moment, as is fabinho.

kessie says he wants to come.

I'm not so sure jose's interested in replacing Carrick. Who is there?

I think he'll go find a solid but limited defensive midfielder, and use him entirely as a disciplined shield in tough games, but I don't see a big name deep holding midfielder on the market. We could sign some shit ones...

I think what's more likely is a Herrera rival being signed.

Players like Carrick are rare because of his positioning and because they're usually already at a top club. I think JM will go for power (Bakayoko/Kessie) and work with the new guy Pogba and Herrera. That's a balanced three and balance is the key, not like for like 'category' replacements. It's not Football Manager.

Power isn't that important, techjnical quality, positional nous and discipline are what matter, even if we can't get a class player like Weigl we should go for someone like Fabinho who's not very good on the ball but will actually sit behind Pogba and provide a safety net, not a CM that keeps rushing ahead of him like a lot of these CM's being suggested do.
