Future planning - Replacing Carrick

Dare I say it I'd love a player in the mould of Anderson but obviously fitter, positionally better and more consistent in their passing. Basically someone who has the legs to get around the pitch (fat jokes aside Ando used to have a lot of energy), can run with the ball and beat players in midfield and is willing to go for an aggressive through ball when they think one is available.

Ando's great performances were few but when he was on his game he was a bloody force of nature and creative to boot. Don't really know if their is anyone in that mould around at the minute? Allow Schniederlin to keep it simple and focus on protecting the defense to free our full backs up in attack.



Basically someone who could produce the likes of this on a consistent basis and to a potentially better level.
 
Yep, Verratti would be the obvious replacement, but not gettable. We should have done something with PSG in the summer regarding him when we had ADM.
 
Needs to be someone extremely two-footed.

That's why I don't think Blind is the answer, as he is very reliant on his (sweet) leg peg. But you need more to elevate yourself to Carrick standards.

Kroos seems gettable and is definitely in the mould required.
 
Blaise Matuidi is a good shout, watched him a lot for PSG recently and he's really composed, can carry the ball but knows when to play the simple pass.

RECURRING THOUGH. DON'T YELL AT ME! Anyway, he's brilliant, but the only way we are going to get him, if his injury problems continue and Bayern give up on him. Like Hargreaves. Really a shame, one of my favourite players outside of United.

Why do people keep on mentioning Verratti? He'd be great, but it's not likely that he is going to sign for us anytime soon.

Yea he's had a rough couple of seasons, but the same happened with Gundogan since the 2012 final and he's back to / close to his best again. I think Javi would be perfect and perhaps a change of scenery would do him good...it would also mean we could play a midfield of Herrera and Javi!

I'd love us to have a "good day Anderson" but all the time kind of player. Sometimes he was lightning in a bottle, albeit for 75 minutes or so.

Carrick is a world class midfielder, so we need another world class player to replace him when the times come. Obviously we lack such a player in our own squad, so we need to get one out there. Gonna be difficult but not impossible.

PSG is the logical window shop.

Luka Modric or Tony Kroos, but ideally Modric, would be a great addition. Haven't seen much of RM lately, but i guess they have to share minutes? or they play together? Modric is at the time for one big last paycheck, so why not us.

Verrati would be my choice but I think Gundogan is more realistic. If we sign a CB, I can see Blind moving to midfield with Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Herrera and Fellaini.
 
What we need is somebody who is an excellent passer of the ball. Schneiderlin, herrera and Schweinsteiger are all very good midfielders in their own way, but the thing that makes the difference is how good Carrick is at passing the ball, and how he can spot the pass and play it forward into feet so quickly and precisely. That's what we need. Of players with that type of skill set, Gundogan would be possibly the ideal player even if his passing isn't quite Carrick levels. Verratti another though he's unrealistic I think. Pjanic is a possibility, though I'm not sure how he would do in the prem. Xhaka would be a cheaper alternative but would be that type of player as well. Those are definitely the type we need though. Playmakers, who have the vision to spot the runner and ability to play it in to them quickly.

Good old Ando. I was one of those that thought him and Cleverley would be the future. That 5-1 demolition of Fulham was brilliant. How wrong was I :(

If you want a player in the Carrick mold, I'd prefer Verrati, but he isn't tall and we already have enough short players. William Carvalho isn't a bad shout either, though he is a different type of player. But to be honest, there aren't too many players who do what does Carrick does best and we already have one of them in Blind.
 
What about that Youri Tielemans Lad ? Aren't we supposedely interested in him ?

What's your point? Was Roy Keane solely responsible for everything we won while he played for us? Or did he have team mates as well?
 
I like Kouyate, not Carrick's passing but box to box, eye for a goal, very dominant in midfield physically
 
Not sure we'd need to splash out on a huge replacement if we played a 4-3-3 with a Herrera, Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger midfield.

Schweinsteiger has got years left in him either. It's a difficult one. We miss Michael when he is missing.
 
We need another man in midfield who can build up play if this is Carrick's last season.

Unless we sign another center back, then Blind can take Carrick's spot.
 
I think we are wasting our time looking for a like for like replacement. I don't think there's a player out there who combines, being a dictator, shielding the defense and a great passing range as his qualities.
The solution IMO is to go to a three man midfield where we have specialists for each function.
Unless you're buying Biscuits, it's hopeless trying.
 
Alaba would absolutely be the number one player on my list, if I was looking for a midfielder. He is world class, he is young, has great attitude and wants to play at CM, which Bayern can't give him at the moment. Probably the reason why he hasn't signed a new contract since 2013. Unlike every other key player at Bayern. He's adored there, however, and they would do anything to keep him. There are much more world class CMs than LBs, which is why he'll find it hard to nail a midfield place in most top clubs. We've got no need for a left back though.

If not, Gündogan or Kroos would be fantastic.

Fantasizing about Verratti is pointless. I doubt he'd even consider it.
 
Gündogan next to Schneiderlin could actually work really well I think. Kroos as well, as long as we don't try to use him like our most defensive midfielder, like Real does all the time I still feel he can be a fantastic player if he has someone next to him who is defensively really strong.

I think Modric would still be my most prefered player though but he isn't that young anymore and would probably need replacing in 3-4 years as well but at his current level he would be an absolute dream playing alongside Schneiderlin.
 
Gundogan and Kroos seem to be sound suggestions. Neves and Tielemans from the younger age bracket seem to have that natural ability to dictate play. Thiago and/or Verratti are pipeline dreams.

Doesn't the type of replacement depend heavily on what formation we are playing long term and also whether we have now decided that Schneiderlin is not a first team starter?

Alaba would be a dream signing. Wasn't aware of his desire to play CM. He is one of the most talented footballers in the world, which is why I just can't see Bayern selling under any circumstances.

Gundogan would be a very good option as well. Not sure he is too fussed about United though. Pretty sure we were in for him in the summer, but he had his heart set on Barca or Real Madrid, so snubbed our interest.

I suggested going to a 433 earlier in the thread. With strictly defensive duties in a 433, I think Schneiderlin is good enough to start for us.

Yeah, there's nothing more that can be added to this, really. Busquets is the ultimate replacement.

If Kroos could improve his defensive abilities à la Carrick, he'd be a wonderful replacement, but as it is, I don't think he has enough to his game to be that player.

Players like Matuidi, Gundogan, Koke etc. are nothing like Carrick.

Neves and Weigl are two young players very much modelling their game on the Carrick/Alonso/Busquets style of midfield play, the former of which should be available.
 
Gundogan or Kroos for me, both are IMO gettable for the right price. This and a right forward should be our priorities this summer.

I agree with your point regarding Matuidi and Koke, but Gundogan, like Carrick, has the ability to play penetrative passes from deep. Nobody else in our side can do that.
 
I'd echo what's been said above - I think it would be difficult to find a direct replacement.

I'd be tempted to look for someone dynamic in a box to box role next to Schneiderlin, who I imagine is our long term holder. I think he's been decent and in time could step up to the sort of level Carrick achieved, but would need a partner who can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
