Future planning - Replacing Carrick

Saul Niguez and Geis are a couple of years older at least with more first team football, I'd also say he's different to Tielemans and Neves who both play deeper, where Bazoer is a very athletic #8.

I don't think we have that many options in the system LvG plays, unless you are counting Mata and Di Maria as CM's, which I don't think LvG does. We have 2 #6's in Carrick and Blind but we only have Herrera and Fellaini who are proper CM's that can play as the 2 #8's in our 4-3-3, if either get injured we are back to playing Rooney in midfield which should be avoided at all costs IMO.

Di Maria is certainly able to play in the tip of the 3 and I think we should play him there especially if we buy another winger/wide forward this summer.Mata is also an option and I think we should give some chances to Pereira also.

I don't think Di Maria will play there for LvG personally as there is no tip, it's an inverted triangle. He needs defensive workrate and possession play from his two #8's, Di Maria is way too erratic with his passing and Mata's physical limitations mean he's had to find his way back into the team on the wing. As for Pereira, I guess it depends on if LvG actually really rates him and unless something changes he is off for free in a few months, but even if he stays my guess is he'd be loaned out.

I'm sure that he won't be loaned out.Same with Wilson. Some players need loans some players don't.

Wilson was kept at the club this season because our attack lacks pace and he has it in abundance, I don't think Pereira is so special that a loan wouldn't benefit him.

I wouldn't mind if we bring in a destroyer to replace him. It would allow us to play both Herrera and Di Maria in CM, while releasing the flanks for two goalscoring wingers in Bale/Depay style.

I'd rather have a classy #6 than have Di Maria playing 60% pass accuracy in midfield and I imagine LvG will think the same, he likes possession and patient building, that's why Di Maria will play his time here on the wing.

Di Maria is still in his first season. There's a hell of a cultural change between Spain/Argentina/Portugal and the EPL. A good quality DM would give us stability at the back. After all even classy Barcelona has their own Busquets.

Di Maria could be in his 5th season and it's not going to make him any less careless in possession. LvG isn't gonna play a destroyer just so he can play Di Maria in midfield IMO, and Busquets is good on the ball, it's not like he's a Wanyama.

Busquets is not a destroyer.

Do we not already have his replacement in Blind?

I thought the Arsenal cup game showed that he shouldn't be. He's good, but he has his limits IMO. In hingsight I could obviously be wrong, but he could be a better O'Shea for us, which wouldn't be too bad either.

I think we'll need to manage Carrick's games next season like we used to do with Rio, so this question may need answering sooner than some think.

Javi Martinez would be the ultimate replacement if there was any chance of getting him. He is brilliant on the ball, strong defensively and tall too which makes him an asset at set pieces both offensive and defensive. He above anyone else would allow us to play Herrera as an 8 and allow us to have a more attack minded 10 without sacrificing defensive solidity. Plus him and Herrera have already played together too.

Activate muppet:

De Gea
RB Hummels Smalling Shaw/Blind

Herrera Martinez

Di Maria Mata Depay

Rooney

Bench: Valdes/AN Other, Jones, Rojo, Rafael, Blind/Shaw, Carrick, Pereira, Fellaini, Janujaz, Nani Young, Van Persie, Wilson.

Pretty crazy balance in attack and defense and we would have crazy strength in depth from the players already at the club. I'd also like to see Nani retained so we can give Janujaz a chance to be back up 10 as I reckon that is the position he will end up growing into. Preferably like to keep Rafael kept either as a starter or as a back up. Possibly keep Valencia too for even further strength in depth.

I don't think there is such a thing as a 'Scholes type player'. Scholes played in the team from about 21 to 38, and was a ery different player at different stages. We need to have an idea specifically of the type of midfielder we want to bring in.
Exactly we effectively had three players over the course of his career here, in each version he was a unique talent.

I fully believe Blind can replace Carrick given another season or two under his belt, the two are so similar. No idea what people are getting at with Blind not being physical enough, he's no weaker or slower than Carrick! A little shorter that's about it. The other two midfield positions, we have Herrera Fellaini ADM and Pereira. That might well be enough. Like many I see di Maria playing more football on the wing next year, he still has to be considered an option there though. Another player to compete in those positions wouldn't go amiss because I don't think any of us want to see Rooney there again.

Convert Verratti into a number 6 and Bob's your uncle. Got everything to be a super holding midfielder, in my opinion. Great passing range, vision, energy and great positional and tactical awareness. He's a bit rash, but I feel that's something he could improve on.

If he does manage to get the side of things under control he's by far the best candidate in terms of a 433.

Its still a big if though. His yellow card record is utterly ridiculous.

please stop buying players to turn them into something we need rather then play them where they made a name. Veron, Kagawa, Anderson... there are too many bad examples

I think for a certain amount of money Bayern would listen.

If he stays fit and can get back to his best, perfect replacement. As big as a risk as Strootman

You mean like buying Carrick as an attacking midfielder and converted into a great holding midfielder? :p

Some of the best centre midfielders have been converted. Gundogan, Kroos, Sweinsteiger, Scholes, etc. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

Is there any chance Javi Martinez is for sale, that guy is the perfect replacement for Carrick.

buying player who know the job definately works better

Assuming neither Busquets nor J. Martinez miraculously become available, Schneiderlin, Gonalons, Krychowiak would seem to be reasonable long-term Carrick replacements. I think the focus this summer will be on a #8 rather than a #6 though, with the search for the latter likely delayed till next year.

Schneiderlin strikes me as an ideal candidate. Apparently Chelsea are interested, but I imagine we'd be a better place for him, given Carrick's age. Whenever I've watched him, I've always been impressed.

I think it's becoming more apparent that the #6 is vital in LvG's system and we'll have to manage Carrick's games next season like we did with Rio, so we should be looking for a replacement to blood in this summer. Perhaps the links with Gundogan could fit with this, over time I could certainly see him as a #6 rather than a #8.

I like him too. If they are willing to let him go for around £20m, I think it's a good price to go for. Anything more would be too expensive. Might as well develop Blind to fill up the gap.

I don't see any replacemnt atm, we maybe have to settle with a diffrent type of player. Always difficult to replace 1:1

I don't think we have to replace him - I think he'll be the best option for us in "big games" for the next year or two - he shouldn't be asked to play more than one game a week though, so I'd say the need is for someone who can fill in and operate in the same kind of manner as Carrick - which will be a tough ask really.

Schneiderlin is the man I want, he knows the league already and he's a top quality footballer.

I have seen us being linked with Lucas Biglia and I think he 'd be the perfect guy to replace Carrick.

Good midfielder, reads the game very well, excellent positioning, good passing and very consistent with tons of experience and exactly the same type of player like Carrick, a silent force that you don't realise how important he is to the balance in your team until he is missing.

I think we should be looking at Developing Blind in that role. He has all the attributes to make that position his for years to come. Just needs to be more positive with the ball.

I'm not saying we have to replace him now, but time is against him and replacing a player starts 2-3 season before he fades. I think we must look now who could potentially be a world class CDM in 2-3 years.

Maybe William C. is still an option even if he turned 23 recently.

Horses for courses. As it stands, Herrera, Blind and Fellaini are looking like parts of what could be a very decent midfield roster, but that depends entirely on us being able to replace Carrick with someone who complement their skill sets, and at the same does it very, very well.

I think Blind can certainly fill in for Carrick in his current role, but I think we'll be significantly weaker for it unless we replace Herrera with a stronger player or Fellaini with a quicker and more mobile (while still physically imposing) player.

In sum, I think that if we're able to find a strong and mobile box to box player to complement our current options, our midfield will be very strong. Even when Carrick's inevitable decline sets in.

He's already 29!

Has anyone mentioned Joao Moutinho ? The likes of him, Schneiderlin and Strootman seem like LvG type signings. Solid, team players much like Blind as well.
