Haha, no I don't, he is just the latest in the line of Davy Klaassen and Guus Til, a scoring midfielder who is decent at all things, but excels at none of them. You could say Thomas Müller fits this as well with the difference that Müller scores a 7 on all attributes while Donny scores a 6. He's not good enough for the premier league. I think judging players from that Ajax side is difficult anyway. Ziyech for instance was absolutely fantastic for them, but can't really replicate that to the premier league either and he has way more weapons than Donny. Or an even better example, aging Lasse Schöne also did very well, also in the CL against Real and Juve, but went on to completely fail at Genoa (I think?).

Don't take my word for it with Ajax players though, I'm not very tribal, but they're still all cnuts. On the other hand, if I do rate an Ajax player I probably mean it :p

Bloody hell, if Donnie is going to be even half as effective for us as Müller has been for Bayern I would be over the moon.

If they're in that much of a state forget FDJ, we should throw money at Pedri instead.

Glazers being tight again then

I'm all for not paying over the odds but €70m is a fair price for FDJ

Paul Hirst already mentioned this like 2-3 weeks ago that he should be available around £60m

We are rebuilding a squad. We need like 6 new starters (and then backups). Throwing silly money on a Pedri (nothing less than 100mil) is obviously out of the question.
Who mentioned silly money? That’s what he is probably valued at in a functional market. Barcelona are in dire straits. I’ve already said we should play hard ball with them over FDJ. Clubs in that position have reduced leverage. I wouldn’t countenance spending €100mn either. All I’m suggesting is putting the feelers out and if the price is right…

If Barca are desperate to sell, then we should really be offering them on the lower end of the scale. I’d say something around the £50-55m should be the opening offer. Let’s not forget they probably need the cash to make their own signings (they’re being linked with loads of players). Let’s use our bargaining power well for once.

The compromise could always be 50m + Martial.

I doubt Barcelona will want to sign any other attackers as long as no one is gone. With Ansu, Memphis, Ferran and Dembele they have enough good players that can play from the wing. They don't need any other wingers, especially not any other winger that hasn't really had a great spell recently. If you're looking to use anyone in this deal then I'd say Telles is the one that could be the most obvious one. For you he is only a backup and Barcelona could use a backup for an ageing Alba and Telles might be half decent enough to be a longer term replacement for him.

What about no? What if we sign two 4.8ft CBs?
b--b-bu-but... It's my birthday! Manchester United, Barcelona and Frenkie need to respect that

Happy birthday!!

Thank you
You're a year older.
You are correct, sir!
Happy birthday, it's my birthday too so happy mutual birthday!
Awesome! Happy birthday to you too!

Think we’d end up paying part of his salary which is high but also Martial is one of the few players that will generate a fee for us so better to try and rinse Barca for 50m or lower and be prepared to move for a cheaper alternative if they don’t play ball.

Different manager, same result. Ten Hag calling De Jong every day. No 1 target for him. Glazers answer is :”too expensive” would you like someone else. No, You dumb Glazers! Manager needs the players he wants. Nothing more, nothing less.

People in here reacting to a Daily Mail article like its gospel

These are the same people who tried to swap us Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina for Pogba at a time when he was actually doing pretty well, so we could always try and chuck in Phil Jones too?

Ultimately we only get De Jong if he decides we are the only club he is going to leave Barcelona for, in which case we'd be in an extremely strong negotiating position. We'd be idiots not to try to drive the price down.

Why do you take what Chris Wheeler says as gospel?

He's not the most reliable journalist.

Close... ultimately we only get De Jong if we're the only club left for him to choose from...

Aye 50m tops. We’ve got so many areas that need addressing we can’t afford to spunk most of our budget on one signing.

I hear what you're saying about spending a certain amount on one player. Apparently you have 120M to spend and you want at least 4 players, then spending more than 50M seems too much indeed for one player.

However, unless Barcelona are really in a precarious situation, I'd say 50M is not going to cut it. Eventhough FdJ hasn't been fantastic for Barcelona, it's not like he's been a flop. Not too long ago he completely bossed El Clasico and proved why Barcelona spent that much money on him and that's not his only good performance. It's just that he's been on and off. He can be great one week and disappear the next. That's in my opinion because they are not using him correctly. But it's not the same as if he's flopped.

If Barcelona didn't need money they would not sell him. If you ask me, based on what he's done at Barcelona he should be worth just over what they bought him for. They bought him for 65M-75M (range is because of bonuses) and I think in normal circumstances he would be worth 80-90M now. However, the market is clearly not as inflated as when Barcelona bought him (just before the pandemic) and Barcelona having financial difficulties also takes the price down.

I do still feel that Barcelona expecting to recoup most of it's investment on him is realistic - unless their situation is really that precarious. I don't think any of us know exactly how bad the situation is. For now I feel like Barcelona might sell at around 60M. 50M + Telles would probably be interesting for them as well.

But what if De Jong is the only CM Hag wants ?

The Caf seems quite set on the fact that we must give Hag everything he wants/needs.
I mean yeah we should definitely be trying our best to get his targets, but I also think Ten Hag should be able to give the board 3-5 names in each position he wants addressing, in case his top target isn’t attainable. It would save us dragging stuff on until deadline day like we usually do, chasing the same players we have been since May.

£70mil is not a lot, surely we could just pay in instalments so we can address other areas too.

I think part of the problem is that they need most of that fee right now (before June?) to stay complaint with FFP but I'm not sure.

I assume the accountants can make that work but it'll be another item we're compromising on, so it should strengthen our position.

We can still get him for 50m this summer if we insert adds on. So like 50m plus appearance or performance adds on.

Seems like we know Barca are financially fecked and are happy to play the waiting game. They need to make something happen to pay wages, and seems like they've got a deal agreed with Lewandowski already.

I suspect we will see movement fairly soon.

Great to hear! Tbh, I’d nearly lob in a bid for Pedri at this stage. Need to capitalise on these types of leverage points while they exist.

Barcelona wants to sell FDJ to be able to make the signings they want.
But they're not going to sell him for a low price. €70M+ maybe.

United could make an offer for Pedri, obviously. The answer would be a laugh and a no, sorry, he is not for sale.

50M + Martial or Telles?. Barcelona doesn't want them even if they're free. Gayá 20M or Telles? M. Alonso 10M or Telles?

The Martial thing does not even need to be commented on. Bartomeu is not at Barcelona and yet he would not sign him. Ridiculous.

You want to sell him fund moves for new signings AND to pay your wages due in June. Let's not pretend you're in a particularly strong negotiating position.

I think we should finalise the deal before a big boy steps in. Once PSG or Bayern show serious interest, we can forget about him. Pay the 60m and move on, he is a huge transfer IMO. If we pay 50 or 60m for him is irrelevant. We can't afford to haggle over this. The other rumoured targets are much less important., as there are alternatives. Here less so.

Yep Barca can't even pay wages 1st June apparently

FdJ is one of their only saleable assets, we should really have them over a barrel, if they weren't fecked they wouldn't be entertaining any sale

I don't think we have them over a barrel, they have several other deals going on in the background that could potentially go through before having to sell a player - but those deals are far bigger and would likely have to take even bigger concessions to get them over the line.

Barcelona is close to closing deals for the sale of 49% of BLM and BarcaStudios, there is talk of €400M and without counting the negotiations for €300M cvc.

Oh I thought it was his wages they needed to get off the books? He’s on big wages £350k I think

They're not close to closing those deals, they want to close those deals before June 30th. You also have to get it ratified by members once negotiations are completed. They know your financial situation as well, so I don't see any incentive for them to wrap those deals up any time soon.

I don't believe there is anything in the offing that can be resolved in the next 10 days barring a player sale

What Barca want for de jong is way to much for a cm, they’ll drop it though because there in no state to be haggling especially if they want to sign lewandowski.
