He's not calling him every day mate. That's just not possible in common sense. It's just what PR thing, journalist being told by the club to make it sounds like De Jong really wants to stay at Barcelona. If Barcelona are forcing him to leave due to financial problems, why are we the front runner to get him? Surely other clubs with CL football would be the front runner. The fact we are the front runner means FDJ is interested to join us over others; thus, the other clubs know it would be waste of time.

I liked Antony's message better, "any time you need me, I'll be there."

The numbers are good to say when it's about the position on the pitch. But not if you're talking about the type of player. Most people seem to confuse the two.

You always making this so difficult. It's only numbers!!

If people say he's no 6. It's not only referring ''the position on the pitch'' is also referring ''his best position on the pitch''. It's the simpler way in how Some people talk about it.

If people want to talk about what type of player he is then it should be described in specific way like he is like deep-lying playmaker or whatever and decribe the role. You don't say he's a no 8 player but he plays at no 6, what you did is weird and confusing. Should just say he plays at no 6 that play as modern libero or deep-lying playmaker or roaming playmaker role or whatever and then describe that he does this and that. And people would understand.

I don't. If Barça really want to sell, surely better teams than us will try and get him, and in that race - against say Bayern, PSG, City, etc. I don't have a lot of confidence.
I agree, although like a lot of people have pointed out already, we have ten Hag and they had a great relationship, ten Hag uses him correctly so that could go for us.

No it's not simpler, it's the most annoying thing ever, because some people refer to a 6 as a DM and some to a deeper midfielder. This needs to stop. So many confusion because of that.
FDJ actually is more of an traditional 8(box2box/playmaker), but plays deep (at 6), but also goes up the field(to the 8/10) positions. So to say he's a 6 is reaaaaaaaaaaaally wrong. It needs to stop.

Like I said, it's just a number.

When people say Pogba is no 8 but he plays at no 6 at United. The first thing that come out to people's mind would be oh so Pogba has been playing out of position from his best position. Are you trying to say that FDJ played out of his position at Ajax by calling him as no 8 but played at no 6?

Moreover, if FDJ is like box to box, there won't be a debate and discussion in here and Barcelona forum about him being played in the wrong position/role at Barcelona. May be he can play at no 8 one day after he develops it but so far his best position is no 6, while no 8 is the position he didn't perform and got criticised heavily.

I’m worried about this. The facts are though that we haven’t signed a playmaker in years and years. Carrick was the last one I can think of

How can a club not even buy a single playmaker in 10 years when Barcelona wiped us out in two consecutive finals playing the way City do now?

It boggles the mind after we went for Toni Kroos and Thiago failed then forgot about the position entirely.

Ole obviously wanted to transition us to a more on the front foot side but he didn’t have a clue how to do it sadly. No playmaker slow CB in Maguire poor wingbacks etc.

I could cut into him but I won’t we could understand what he wanted now but it was poorly done. I don’t think the guy ever wanted to be remembered as an underdog or counter attack specialist.

Its funny reading all this, I think all this is because of how crappy our midfield has been over the years.
Especially the Pogba factor and the idea of balancing the midfield with him in it(something I feel is impossible in a double pivot), the fact is FDJ skill set is dynamic enough we could utilize different kind of midfielders around him depending on the game scenario and our current options, we could play him with Fred, a Casemiro type or Schone type(a technical but not athletic player) like he did at Ajax, the problem at Barca is the fact they don't play a double pivot and the fact he is being asked to maintain an advance position while his strength is connecting the defence to the rest of the team with his dribbles and line breaking pass.

If they’re about to bring in Lewandowski FDJ is being sold.

He is going to get sold anyway. Barca need the money to reinvest. He is their biggest asset and on big wages as well. I mean it is obvious that he is going, only need to convince him and find a buyer.

Someone will have to explain the Barca situation I think because no matter how much they have spent their revenues should account for most of it unless the full extent of wages wasn’t revealed.

They are in a dire state with players not being paid etc but desperately scrambling around to sign average players like Soler and Gaya.

Lewandowski is worth it but he’s well into his 30s and probably on crazy wages at Bayern. Why not go for the younger players on less money? I just don’t get it.

Or clear house and promote from La Masia like the famous Pep side?!

Soler and Gaya are very good players and would be priced at 20M each.

Soler is far from average, he's been one of the best players in La Liga this season. If they sell Frenkie and sign Soler they've done incredible business. He's probably a better fit than Frenkie for the role Xavi wants him to play.

I do not understand what I am looking at.
Look at the second username on the list. Romero was just quoting the name of the user, not saying FDJ is close to joining United.

Someone trolling United fans.

Full article of the above tweet:

Manchester United have told Barcelona they won’t blow their budget on a £70million summer deal for Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong is one of United’s top targets with incoming manager Erik ten Hag keen to work with the former Ajax midfielder again.

Barcelona want to recoup the £65m it cost to sign De Jong from Ajax in 2019.

A compromise remains some way off. United made it clear to Barca and De Jong’s representatives that they cannot commit such a slice of their transfer funds to the Holland star.

Ten Hag will have to work on a limited budget when he officially starts work next week as United missed out on the Champions League.

He faces a major rebuilding job, with up to 10 players set to leave, but the club is determined to be disciplined in the transfer market.

De Jong (right), 25, would prefer to stay at the Nou Camp or move to a Champions League club if Barca decide to sell him.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted he may have no choice but to offload some stars due to the club’s ongoing financial problems.

‘I don’t know if we will sell important players,’ he said. ‘If we complete some deals, maybe it won’t be needed. The priority is our financial situation. We will do what is best for the club.’

Ten Hag has prioritised signing a central midfielder, plus a striker to replace Edinson Cavani. Benfica’s Darwin Nunez is a target.

The new manager may also strengthen in central defence amid speculation he could raid Ajax for Jurrien Timber or Lisandro Martinez, although United still have options in that position even if Eric Bailly and Phil Jones leave.

Meanwhile, Juventus are struggling to match Paris Saint-Germain’s offer to Paul Pogba. The France midfielder is also likely to speak to Real Madrid

Graham Hunter has said that Barca are briefing the media about wanting around 70 to 80m, but would find it difficult to turn down €50m.

He’s the journo that’s repeatedly said we only have 20mill to spend in the summer

He’s sticking to his guns. Especially how it’s worded. Reality is we ain’t over spending when you just sold Coutinho for peanuts. Don’t tell us about recouping.

50 million euros would be a ridiculous bargain, I can't believe that.

Sounds about right to be honest. He’s been meedy there and Tchouameni is going for around the same price full of promise and good form.
