This will drag until the end of the window. I think De Jong is using the time to his favour, the clock is really going against Barca and United but not him.

They'll have to pay him, Xavi wants him to stay and will play him if he does. So there's no need for him to rush into anything, either Barca pay the wages they owe him or he stays and they'll still pay him the wages. There's no losing side for him.

That doesn't sound reluctant to me really

It's the freakin definition of reluctant!

He'd only join because Barca are forcing him out and if he gets his money.

It's ADM all over again with extra layers of feckwittery on top.

The kid has just bought a home for €5m, got engaged and I'm absolutely sure his other half would prefer the sunny, bustling city of Barcelona vs rainy Manchester and the Trafford centre.

Not sure I can stick with this transfer saga all the way through like the rest of you muppets. I think I may be out after today

Glad you're finally coming round.

Bolded bit - I take your point

But has the business done so far lead you to believe United are building a team that will be title challenging any time soon?

For me, no. I'd say the window has been about par. I think they need a top class forward and top class CM otherwise the window will look like a failure. So I don't see this win/win situation

I agree it’s not an earth shattering window by any stretch and the win win scenario is purely in relation to FDJ not our window as a whole.

However, it is the first window under the new regime and reports of our lessened budget appear to be accurate. We have also managed to do something that we haven’t managed in 10 years… release players.

I think there is plenty to be positive about not least the clear intent for a reset and the abandonment of the idea that players in contracts were always assets.

Not to mention I have faith ETH will have a number of our players playing at levels that make posters on here eat their words.

If I’m right who knows what January and another summer window could bring.

TLDR; Give it a year and I think this place thinking we are on our way to a title challenge.

Glad you're finally coming round.

Think you need to read it again...

Their preference is to stay put in Sunny Spain.

The lad was linked with a move to us as far back as January, he buys a home in April for €5m.

Kid is happy with his life and due to earn 70m odd the next 40 years staying put.

Doubt we'll be paying him as much and he can't get money owed either...

What exactly are the benefits for him to leave and be happy joining United?

I pray we're not waisting time on this transfer.
If Frenkie doesn't want to leave Barca, then find other targets.
Surely Ten Hag must have a backup plan in case this transfer fell through for whatever reason and which looks certain to happen now.
This dude is not coming to United and Barca are not going to activate anymore levers to pay him what he's owed.

I can't believe there's people in here, after 800 fecking pages, still going on about Di Maria and the weather without a hint of irony

Please tell me you're doing a bit.

Xavi will play him if he has him but it would be in a squad rotation role. He has other players who he prefers to de Jong and he'll probably always play them if they're fit. De Jong won't be a guaranteed starter, he might get a bit part as a sub, or quite possibly not at all.

Barca will likely get their wish if him going, but they'll have to pay up for him to go.

Finally seeing the light and on board. Good to see.

To be fair its not NOT like Di Maria :wenger:

Why would they wish for him to go if they don't want him.

Because he played 47 games for the club last season. Leaving out of the tour could be strongly argued as constructive dismissal, leaving Barca open to having to lose the player AND pay out the entirety of his contract, which is an incredible sum of money.

My guess, he'll be used much like Chong is used for United on tour. It'd be let known that he isn't seen by Xavi as a first team starter.

That puts pressure on the player to drop his demands for back payment, whether he stays or leaves. And in court, Xavi could simply say he preferred other players, happens all the time.

Hey now, the way it’s going with climate change… Manchester is going to be the dreamy tropical destination and Spain is going to be an inhospitable desert :p

Think it's starting to be painfully obvious that FDJ is open to joining us, but it's not his first choice.
He wants to stay at Barca, but also not at the expense of a paycut.

So we are his contingency plan IF barca force him out, but even then he won't budge unless they pay him the deferred portion of his contract.

So until Barca make his position untenable AND pay him what he thinks he's owed, he will stay at Barca and will also state to everyone that he wants to stay.

You could all save yourselves the boom and bust cycles of twitter updates by just keeping the above scenario in perspective.

FDJ already has a home in Barcelona, so it makes sense that his wife goes there first. Anyway he can't shift to any other country till his situation is resolved and finding a home in another country, considering Brexit, is not so straightforward. It is logical that he awaits the resolution of his existing contract before deciding on his plans.

This works on the assumption taht there is a 'resolution' to his contract. He probably wants the resolution to his contract in the form of Barca honour it and he stays there for many more years. You're working on this assumption, as are others on here, that he wants out. All the evidence points to him wanting to stay, ideally.

That doesn’t quite add up though. Barca are trying to push him out and have agreed a sale price. If he doesn’t want to go knowing the club are pushing him out he has to take a firm NO stance. He has to be the one to reject us and shut down the links. The fact he hasn’t means he knows he will probably end up here before September.

That would be daft. Barca could have made his life extremely uncomfortable, why would he close any doors until the window is closed? He's sitting tight right now hoping this all blows away and he can stay, in all likelihood.

Is there any logical explanation/assumption or at least a good theory why De Jong and his agency need to say that they want to remain at Barcelona, even if he really wants to leave?

I do not get how this supposedly strong stance is going to bring benefits in the wages owed. If his camp let the journalists know that if he gets fully paid the deferred wages he is going to leave to United, otherwise he is happily sitting on the current agreed contract in Barcelona, wouldn't that be better for everyone who doesn't have a clue what is going on and try to assume things? I believe that then the media would pressure Barcelona even more about the wages thing (providing that this is the case).

Something I've said myself. Now would be the perfect time after we agreed a fee with Barca. So why he still feels the need to stick to the 'I don't want to leave' stance, instead of saying 'I'll go once I have my money' stance, which at least keeps United fans onside a bit too.

The club have said themselves with regards the Eriksen signing:

"It's not just about getting players in, it's about getting the right players in"

Think Pep at Bayern "I only want Thiago"

Tielemans, Neves COULD be improvements on Fred and Mctominay but there is no guarantee they are the right players for the way we want to play going forward.

If you want a Messi but he won't come you don't sign an Andy Carroll.

You can't accept we were poor last season with no style of play or chemistry and criticise the current set up for only wanting the right players for the way we want to play going forward. Such knee jerk reaction is why we ended up in this mess in the first place.

That's all great but is pointless. You assume there is no player out there, other than FDJ, who fits how we want to play. Did ETH have FDJ at Ajax last season? No. Did he ever replace him with a similar player at Ajax? No. We didn't miss out on Ronaldinho and decide to pass on Cristiano Ronaldo because he's completely different.

I'm pretty sure there are other players that he would be happy with,

Well that's not true.

He has quite a few times.

Just one of at least 4 or 5 examples from about April onward where he stated his happiness at Barca and not wanting to leave.

That part about answering the phone is pretty damning now you look at it, because he's obviously referencing us.

ADM was actually fine with leaving Madrid, but he wanted to go to PSG and was annoyed and upset that Madrid instead sold to the highest bidder but felt he had to accept.

There is no PSG here, and nor was he going to play for a manager he had a great relationship with, so actually it's feck all like.

Someone being tier 1 doesn't mean their personal opinions hold any merit

Why do you think he'll be a rotation option? He started 35 games of La Liga 2020/21 and 30 of 2021/22. He missed 3 games last season due to injury.

So he basically started 30 out of the 35 games he was available for. That's a nailed starter if you ask me.

Doesn't matter how many times you say it, people will always use the di Maria comparison. Still a lot of di Maria failing was down to LvG wasn't it, then his house was burgled so it's no surprise that he didn't want to be here

Busquets and Pedri are basically nailed on starters. He's fighting with Kessie, Nico and Pjanic for one spot. Kessie plays in the position better too.

Barca are trying to get him put because they can't pay his wages. Do you honestly think they're going to give him the impression that he's wanted and needed at the club?

As others have said they can't freeze him out as that'll be constructive dismissal and Barca will be fecked. They can play him sparingly and just argue they had better players they wanted to use.

But you just that that they prefered Manchester, make up your mind!

Just messing, relax

now you mention it, I am getting Daley vibes. Glad you’re finally on board anyway, full steam ahead

They just got Kessie and Pedri will likely get more minutes this season, so de Jong will likely play less than last year regardless of the transfer situation. But the biggest factor is that this is the only meaningful thing that they can do to force him to quit, even though it's probably more harmful to the club than to the player.

You are now proving that you use any negative information to further the narrative you're trying to spin.

No I'm not.

I'm highlighting the fact that when Ducker posts something you agree with you shove it down other members throat as concrete evidence the deal will happen.

When Ducker provides his own opinion on the transfer you and others then slate the guy and tag him as being a forum spy

It's just daft.

If he's as knowledgeable and ITK and then expressing his opinion on that information as akin to ADM, I think its fair enough to say its merited.

The reason this is still on is that United haven't said it isn't. Frenkie came back from holiday. United's bosses went to talk to Barca's bosses. A big fee was agreed. Frenkie went on tour with his employing club, as you would expect. Nothing else concrete has happened.

The thread stays open!

I told you yesterday what the difference is. His article yesterday was an opinion piece and not really noteworthy.
