Apparently so. It was reported that he contacted ten Hag directly and told him that he would prefer to go to Ajax and that was the end of it. We moved on and abandoned the talks

Right the same player we saw on video saying he hopes Ten Hag would take him to United...

Do we know when Barca have agreed to pay this deferred wage payment? For example had we not been interested in FDJ at all this summer would they have gone into next year say still owing him the money?

It's like some people can’t be bothered to read the thread so selfishly want it closed. Weird.

If people want updates only just use the transfer tweets thread or the feed.

I 100% agree mate!

The deal is alive so no reason to close it. Yeah this thread is for the hardcore transfer muppets and transfer tweets for the people who only want quick updates.

They've received about 650m in sales of tv rights, manufacturing and sponsorships.

They haven't. They have only got 200 odd million from selling 10% of TV rights.

They have approval of selling rights etc... but they haven't agreed deals with anyone for those. The 650m is what they want to raise.

According to Romero the second lever is activated so it would now be around €550-600 million.

They do not 'owe' him anything in the traditional sense, they got him to sign a new contract during covid which reduced his wages for the 1st 2 years of the contract with the following 4 years showing a higher basic wage, i am guessing his argument would be i wouldnt have signed the deal if i knew you were going to sell me before i could recoup the reduced wages in the following years of my contract where the rest of the money is 'owed'.

Yeah I don't believe that. No way we aimlessly chase FDJ and accept we won't sign anybody, in the most needed position, if we fail. And this is out of our hands too, so it's not like we can be confident we'll just pay up in the end. It's been said throughout that we will walk away, some had last week as the deadline too.

It's far from a perfect storm in our favour by the looks of it. Long term contract, about to have a huge salary increase, plays at dream club, just bought a big house in Barcelona, we've no CL, Barca building a team good enough to clean up trophies....it's a damn tough sell if anything.

The club have said themselves with regards the Eriksen signing:

"It's not just about getting players in, it's about getting the right players in"

Think Pep at Bayern "I only want Thiago"

Tielemans, Neves COULD be improvements on Fred and Mctominay but there is no guarantee they are the right players for the way we want to play going forward.

If you want a Messi but he won't come you don't sign an Andy Carroll.

You can't accept we were poor last season with no style of play or chemistry and criticise the current set up for only wanting the right players for the way we want to play going forward. Such knee jerk reaction is why we ended up in this mess in the first place.

The thing for United is that the alternatives people are suggesting - players like Tielemans or Neves - are not only big drop offs in terms of quality, but they look like they'll be available late into the transfer window. For me it makes sense to leave this as long as possible before cutting our losses.

The problem then is they know exactly what we have to spend and will want more on top because they'll be down a player without being able to adequately replace them. You can throw at least another 10m or more onto each of those players prices if its left late in the window.

It feels like Barcelona are desperate to get rid of FDJ. If he stays, Barca lose out on the transfer fee and the wages saved and still have to pay the deferred amount. So Barca are strongly incentivised to come up with a compromise with FDJ. Its better for them to just pay him the deferred amount and then sell him, since they're paying it in any case.

Ideally they want his wages off the books, but there's very little they can do other than demote him to the bench.

Overall it feels like the deck is stacked in favour of the move happening. We obviously want it, Barcelona really want it and while FDJ doesn't, he probably also doesn't want the realistic alternative, sitting on the bench for a year before being sold anyway. My guess is United see it this way and are happy to let it play out for another couple of weeks before moving away. As long as they leave themselves time to get a replacement before 1st Sept, I think they're playing a difficult situation well.

A club should never buy a player that doesn't want to be here which is why I've argued it throughout this thread.

If it happens its because some agreement has been arranged and still FDJ is reluctant to leave. I don't for a second believe he wants to be here still.

So what's the chances they give de Jong what he's asking for and tell him they now require him to move on?

They likely could keep him if they wanted too, but if they're after Silva as reported, there is no way he's staying (unless as stated de Jong refuses and makes Barca honour his current contract)

We don't have definite proof that is the case.

Don't know really. I personally think this won't impact the deal though.

Mainly because I think Barca knew this second deal was imminent and if they planned on paying him using the money from it you'd think he might not have gone on tour.

Just TV rights at present I believe. 10% and 15% both from Sixth Street.

Two "levers" have been used thus far.

The first raised about 200 or more and this weeks one is about 320m approx.

I'm off on the original figure as I forgot the 1st lever amount but still, they've received a considerable investment this month.

That's their own money.

Not sure what this means, you'll have to elaborate.

Sounds like something that in best case scenario would result in a tough legal battle. I guess the other option here is for us to add his deferred wages to his contract here but we'd virtually be adding the odd 15m to the fee.

Barcelona sells TV rights 25% 10 years ahead was it?

So they need to be frugal going forward cause you will have less money coming in and will probably lose money since TV rights will be worth more in 2-10 years.

Ok fair enough you do it to survive BUT THEN to go and splash the cash at once on shiny new toys is just beyond stupid, i simply cannot fathom it!

Creative accounting at its best.

And as we say, if that was the case, de Jong would have told ten Hag exactly how it was - he doesn't want to leave, has no intention of joining and he's wasting his time.

That's not happened and we're still in for him meaning Ten Hag has his assurances, or what he considers reasonable ground for staying and pushing for the player

Exactly, anything else is guesswork or hearsay. Especially from posters on here.

I admit a lot of what I say is guesswork or opinion. I don't know the ins and outs of the transfer, but I'm pretty certain that what is being fed to the media is nothing like what's being said behind closed doors.

This is the sticking point. If there's nothing in his contract that states this he's really in the gutter. Probably needs to fire his agent as well.

Some of you have so much faith in ETH's pull for his former players, that you forget these players also have their own motivations and futures to worry about.

Exactly and like most clubs, there will be one or two players at Ajax glad to see the back of ETH.
The worrying thing for us is that ETH has apparently read Timber all wrong! Maybe he has with FDJ? If that is the case Erik should take Denis Healy's advice "when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging".

I speaking in terms of how the poster worded it.

Meaning if he doesn't.

Personally I'm very much leaning towards the lad flat out doesn't want to leave Barca.

If he does leave, it'll be him leaving a club unhappy and us getting a player not focused... eg Di Maria.

That's what I said. First for 10% and now the second for 15% both from Sixth Street.

Yes, two separate amounts.

They've received a fair chunk of wonga in recent weeks to assist in the short term at least.

That wasn't aimed at you, more people who claim definitively that he doesn't want to be here despite knowing feck all. The same people who post "walk away" etc.

I know you are pretty rational.

Said it before.

Like pissing themselves to keep themselves warm.

Sooner or later they'll have to come to terms with the fact they're sitting in a puddle of cold piss.

Maybe Timber really wanted to come and was very open to the idea, but after van Gaal warned him that his world Cup place was in jeopardy if he didn't play week in and week out, he would be dropped.

Maybe he looked at who we already had and didn't see much opportunity to be a regular starter so decided against the idea. I really don't know but by all accounts he was very open to coming
