If they don’t sell de Jong now, then apparently they will have a demotivated de Jong and also a bunch of purchased but not registered players.

Not an ideal scenario for Barca, to be frank.

Except that's not the case, he needs Barca to genuinely believe he isn't gong to move for him to hold greater leverage.

I think what I said achieves that, whilst also not souring things with the club he's supposedly about to sign for.

I mean, United obviously aren't happy with it if they're briefing against FDJ to say he had told them he's interested. Completely defeats to objective and actually makes you wonder just how much United and FDJs team are talking.

Only if you believe he 100% isn't interested in coming, as in, the Spanish press garbage.

If you believe that his priority is to stay at Barca, but failing that he's spoken multiple times with ETH and has United and a reunion with his old manager as his next option (as has been reported by the UK press), then the interview won't be at all awkward. He'll simply address that he intended to spend his career at Barca, but understands the financial difficulties the club has faced, especially since Covid and has been in contact with ETH and insisted to him all along that if he would leave Barca then it would be to join him.

Frenkie's agent is stealing this

Now, we just witness a new level of how low Barca can be. They are disgusting.
Then Barcelona would brief to their friendly press that they gave him extra vacation days because he's newly engaged. Throwing shade at his fiancée...

Me projecting.

Do we think he's made it clear to you "I'll join but not until these fecks give me my money". That genuinely feels very possible to me.

If he was really not interested in moving, he'd have let you guys know not to bother. Right?
Apparently if he requests a transfer or agrees to leave the club then he loses his deferred payments. Hence, I believe his and his agents stance in Spain to all the media is “We ain’t going anywhere, so you’re going to have to pay us what we are owed”. Once they receive the money, I’m certain FDJ will be on the first plane out of there.

Do people honestly think he would stay there now after Xavi and the board have made it clear he’s not wanted and not part of their plans. It’s different if it was a case of they are happy to keep him, but they are blatantly treating him like shit and forcing him out. I don’t think he’s that stupid to have the desire to still stick around.

Jaysus, are there any other cases of a club so badly wanting to feck a player off?

I cant imagine he actually wants to stay there after all this, surely he's just maximising the position to screw every last penny out of them before he goes.

That MUTV interview is going to be awkward as hell
Something similar to what Beckham said when he signed for Madrid would work:

It was a difficult decision to leave Barca, but an easy decision to join United, who are one of the biggest club, yada yada..."

This is a fair summary.

However he always been open to coming to coming united otherwise we would never have started negotiations. The official line from FDJ camp has been that he 'wants to stay' to ensure that he receives all of his wages owed to him on his way out as opposed to a transfer request which would leave the door open to forgoing the wages.
Yeah, that’s what it looks like.

Without being too negative: Being “open to a move” leaves plenty of scope for backing out.

I can understand top players being reluctant to come to us when we have no CL this year. They might have every respect for Utd but this year is not a good time for a transfer; unless you’re forced out of where you are and you have scant options, of course.

If he is extremely petty, he could decide to stay at Barcelona and see them have to pay him and a bunch of unregistered players.

Barca has isolated FDJ. He is not in their first preseason friendly. Now Barca publicly shame him not to leave. They are really disgusting.

If we didn't need a midfielder badly, I'd love to see how that plays out.

So I think an important distinction should be made about his wages.

Initially it appear that they were deferred wages. This would mean in essence that Frenkie loaned Barcelona and that he accrued or earned those wages over the past few seasons with a view to being repaid on this loan over the remainder of the contract. Under these circumstances Frenkie would be completely entitled to sit tight and demand his money. He would also be entitled to this legally.

But I've recently read that the wages aren't actually deferred. It's just simply part of his contract that he'll be paid a lower amount initially followed by a pre-arranged wage increase written in the contract which begins at the start of the upcoming season. This would be a completely different scenario, and while it would mean Barca are behaving in a pretty morally reprehensible way it would also mean that legally Frenkie is not entitled to anything.

Anyone know for sure which one it is?

I believe and others would confirm, it’s the second. He has no legal ground to demand the extra money as it seems that his contract was renegotiated and salary was adjusted.

He isn’t technically owed anything. But from an ethical (perhaps) point of view, he did try to help the club, he agreed a salary adjustment and a reprofiled sum of monies so now it seems like they’re pulling one on him.

Horrible position for him to be in. And even worse it seems like they’re now telling him move or you shall rot in the reserves. He can sit on his contract and Bale it out, move and loose some money or Barcelona can pay some of the ‘deferred but not deferred’ money so he gets something at least. I believe our offer now has an increased up front payment to facilitate this.

say what u want but we are really invested in getting him in.

They told him to leave.90% of players leave. Except for sorting out his severance I don’t see why they are disgusting?

Scroll back a few pages, there’s a link to a marca article that explained in perfectly. Basically I think his contract was renegotiated so rather than an I.o.u, it’s a new contract extension with the deferred wage added on top of his std wage. Obviously he breaks that contract by asking to leave or transferring away from Barca and wouldn’t be entitled to his back pay. This explains his stance in public
.

Are you new to what has happened I guess? Search deferred salary, you will understand why they are disgusting.

Yes of course the ball is in his court.

But if he decides to stay put, he will do exactly what Bale did where he’ll collect his money and be completely isolated from the team and the first team. I’m not sure he’ll want to do that at the age he’s currently at. He could potentially end up wasting 2 of his best years.

Beyond the deferred wages though, are we taking on the sort of silly astronomical wages that Barca is being castigated for dishing out willy nilly, or is FDJ taking a (perhaps less dramatic) pay cut coming here anyway?

I don’t see why he would take a pay cut? He was getting 400k there. Mostly likely he will get his salary matched by us.

As much as I want a new midfielder, I'd love to also see him stay and screw up Barcelona's finances.

This was originally reported 4 hours ago. utdreport just took their time in reporting this.

See that Tier 1 (Achraf Ben Ayad) hasn't adopted that line yet. Keep telling myself surely he's not on that plane to US if we have agreement with Barcelona, however while personal terms and deferred wages aren't sorted see him being on it.

He's also probably the journalist who's closest to the team out of the lot. He's often in pictures with their players and staff as they travel, so I wouldn't be surprised if he maintains a pro-Barcelona tone throughout this saga.

I know what’s happened. But that’s not what you said. You didn’t reference deferred wages in your comment. You mentioned their public treatment and trying to force him out.

Publicly saying he wants to stay is why publicly they are telling him to leave. It’s both a game and the club normally wins.

I wouldn't see it as over if he's on that plane on Saturday, however it's rare a player leaves one team's pre season tour and joins another.

Barcelona are a different level of scummy. It might work to our advantage but they're really showing why any player should think twice about joining them.
